Drop forging doesn’t “misalign” the molecules.😂. The reason the term drop forged means low quality is because CHINESE companies used to use garbage steel that wasn’t much better than pig iron and drop forging allows for MASS production. If someone uses extruded steel, the molecules become very well lined up in the hot extrusion process ( think of the old play doh smasher) at least as well as hand forging. And the woodcraft and velvicut series are better and more expensive because they use 5160 steel which is highly impact and abrasion resistant. This is probably the best steel to use as a blade. The best swords made today are made of extruded 5160.

I know that the Scandinavian axes all have, "Hand forged" printed on their blades, but if you've ever watched a video of them being made, they are produced on a drop forge. Sure, human hands are moving the axe blank through progressive dies, but they are hammered in a die, on a drop forge. When I think of a hand forged axe, I think of an old school craftsman that is shaping an axe with a hand held hammer. For this, I would suggest looking at a video by Liam Hoffman.

I agree with you, most axes that are marketed "hand forged" are really open drop forge instead of being just by hand. They are not just dropped forged though and there is a differences. This open forging is still aligning the carbon grains in the steel, therefore offering the benefits of complete hand forging but at a more affordable price. Also most of these open forged axes are finished by hand. I have seen some of Liam Hoffman axes and they are amazing, but you see that in the price(: Also you might look at H&B forge, Wolf valley forge and Seven pine forge axes. We should be doing some videos on them soon, they are all more hand forged then most.

I'm sorry but I think your mistaking drop forged for something else. Its forged with a giant hammer press, they just use molds to shape it. So they get the steel yellow hot then put it in giant power hammer but it molds it in like five hits instead of all day by hand. The guy still has to hold it and move it to keep it from sticking. It is not inferior to hand forging bc its using modern tec to do the same thing as if you using a smaller power hammer in a shop. It just has enough power to do it in 1000 times less hits. I think your thinking of cast forging.

@@wisementrading Thank you very much, Yes sir, We (The wife and I) Both have a back ground in Photography. My love for the outdoors and adventures is how we got started on the youtube side of things. So I started making videos about three or four years ago. Originally started a different channel, and we started this one a couple of years back now with our off grid camping and what being a huge part of the channel. Camping, Hiking, Cooking etc. (bushcraft type stuff if you will) Yes sir, I am on your website right now looking around. You have a lot of really good tools and I can see this will be one of my favorite new stores to shop. Thanks again Dale

I’m torn between this and the review you did in the Hults Bruk Akka 🤔 help me out lol 😂
@wisementrading
@wisementrading 5 жыл бұрын
That is a hard decision, the Akka and Wood-craft are probably two of my favorite axes. Although they are different in some ways they have enough similarities to make it hard to pick from any particular one. The Akka does have just a little heavier, wider head, but that is personal preference not good or bad. Here are two thoughts to keep in mind: the Wood-craft is a little cheaper so if that is a big concern don't think twice about buying it. However it is kinda cool that the Akka is hand forged, I am sure if you have watched my other videos you know I like that. I don't believe you will regret or think twice about either one once you hold it in your hand.

@@wisementrading I'm trying to make this same decision... Both are 24". The Akka is not heavier, it's lighter. Akka is 1.5 pound head, thinner. CT is 2 pound with flat grind... Which would be better at.splitting? Any other thoughts on differences.
@mccoyburgess844

Looks like the handle on the HB is narrower at the head than the CT. That might be better for choking up on the handle for carving. You did comment on handle width on the CT being less than optimal. I like the CT and I have a CTBoy’s axe which has like a lot.

So many think to sell ability, for profit. They buy expensive tools from able craftsmen, show them off, sell ability, make a profit. In 1974 I rode a bicycle across the Moroccan Sahara. That was a long time ago. Since then my beard has turned white and I've taken up shaving with a straight razor, and learned to garden (not much to speak of but well learned). At least I can grow stuff, know a lot about bicycling and sharpening steel. What the f do these Tubers know? - how to make money on UT.
