I was there three nights earlier with my cousin. We go every year. Fantastic band with so much history. The best word to describe an evening with the Count Basie Orchestra is “perfect”.

American classical music from the 20th century. Of all the big bands of that century, only Count Basie's organization has continued. As current leader Scotty Barnhart said on Wednesday May 24 when I was saw the band at Birdland, it is the 88th year the band has been on the road. Next year will be the 40th anniversary of the Count's passing. That's a hell of a run for the founder's band to continue.

There is a very excellent Duke Ellington Orchestra still extant . They appear at The Blue Note in NYC . They have recently completed a successful European Tour
