My mother taught us about our Scottish ancestry. She told us never trust any government. Because even when you think you can trust them, they will take everything even your life, if it brings them more power. And listening to this kinda proves her right. I mean we all knew the oppression that the crown put on people, but you dont really think about all of the innocent people killed for their power lust.

Low Government Trust is surprisingly felt here in Newfoundland and Labrador, where we had our way of life destroyed by the Canadian government when we were united with them in the name of centralization. There's still a lot of people here descending from the same people who lived in fishing villages on the coast that were forced to move inland or to larger communities that hold great resentment of not only the national government but also the provincial government since the politicians who voted for union were also the ones who screwed us over afterwards until they were voted out of office

@@pizzarat5097 What happened with the government in Newfoundland and the fishing villages? I know that a lot of people lost their jobs when the cod populations crashed but I haven't heard about the government doing much besides trying to put a ban on cod fishing (way too late to do much at that point).

28:47 “What I remember about the Massacre of Glencoe was... how quiet it was. During the waning hours of the 13th of February, 1692, the Regiment was discreetly transferred back to Glencoe. It was a silent trip. We all knew what was about to happen, what we were about to do. Did we have any doubts? Any private, traitorous thoughts? Perhaps, but no one said a word. Not on when we marched through their gates, not when the orders came down, and not when we began killing civilians. Not a word.”

"We Scots can hold a grudge" there are two families in my area who are Scottish decent. Apperantly when the two of them came to America in the 1880s, one of the MacDonald boys stole, then killed a steer owned by the Glovers. To this day, the two families are VERY resentful of each other, it's not uncommon to hear about one of the younger boys from either family being arrested after getting into it with the other.

The UK has a really good education system it really just depends on the teacher you get and what they choose most teachers will pick UK related history topics it just so happens that our history is so vast it often drags in other countries history in with it. also school is synonymous with teaching bullshit you'll never need to know so take that as you will.

@@incandescentadolescents1889 I guess our history classes regularly teached shit about ancient Egypt, French and Indian war, American revolution, a little bit about the war of 1812, age of recovery, gilded age, American imperialism age, Mexican American war, WW1 and then WW2, and then finally Cold War. There were occasionally a few bouts of foreign country periods such as the French revolution and tid bits of the glorious revolution, especially the industrial revolution, but we never strayed away from French, British, and American history into other country histories such as Russian, Spanish or Italian. Aside for the foreign revolutions, my high school history classes taught in that order. We were encouraged to check out other foreign nation's history's that were not explained in detail or only had small bits of information based on the courses we were in, but good luck getting American kids too worried about sex and clout to care enough to bother. Hell I don't think any student other than the nerds and I even knew about the Russian revolution and the rise of communism.

Yup. Schools don't teach a great deal of British history. A little bit of the Tudors, 3 years of WW2, and a footnote mention of the Romans. I didn't even know until adulthood that the Anglo Saxons came here from what is today Denmark. Still don't know the names of half the Kings of England throughout history. Wasn't taught anything about Napoleon, presumably because talking about him would mean mentioning Britain. Oh, there was one more thing. We were taught how evil we were because of the slave trade, right before launching into American history that we didn't need to know. Schooling in the UK doesn't teach anything useful. Not even our own history. It's just a place to put kids during the day, that is under the control of the State.

Even if your war on me was just--as it was not, for were you ten times as wise you would have no right to rule me and mine for your own profit as you desired--even so, what will you say of your torches in Westfold and the children that lie dead there? And they hewed Háma's body before the gates of the Hornburg, after he was dead. When you hang from a gibbet at your window for the sport of your own crows, I will have peace with you and Orthanic.”

“They have created a desert and called it peace” is a quote taken from an ancient British monarch (pre-angles, so Celtic Brit king) giving a speech warning of the Roman invasions under Claudias. The speech is preserved in the histories of Tacitus. The full quote (translated from the Latin to English of course) goes like this: “Robbers of the world, having by their universal plunder exhausted the land, they rifle the deep. If the enemy be rich, they are rapacious; if he be poor, they lust for dominion; neither the east nor the west has been able to satisfy them. Alone among men they covet with equal eagerness poverty and riches. To robbery, slaughter, plunder, they give the lying name of ‘empire’; they make a desert and call it ‘peace’.”

I lived in North Carolina for 10 years and studied southern culture. There is a very high number of people with Scottish ancestry (there's even a Scotland county in NC). There's a reason why the Confederate flag design was based on the St. Andrew's cross, and why fried food and warm hospitality is widespread. Much of southern U.S. culture can be traced directly to Scotland.

Just found out my ancestors were apart of the last Jacobite rebellion. That battle was a wash. Lasted under an hour and the Jacobites were utterly defeated. 80 memebers of Clan Grant were enslaved and sent to Barbados. Only 18 survived in 3 years. Clan Grant even has a separate tartan to honour the slaves of Barbados. So I have some slavery privilege, too. And it explains how the last name Grant pops up in the Caribbean.

After doing a bit of research, I found out that the MacDonald's (Children of Donald) draw their lineage from a man named Domhnall mac Raghnaill (Son of Raghnaill), a 12th century King of the Isles. The name "Raghnaill" is an Irish translation for the name of a Norse man who likely would've raided and settled Ulster Ireland during the Viking Era, "Rögnvaldr". It would later be anglicized as the surname "Reynolds". My family name is Reynolds, one of my grandfathers, maybe second or third removed, immigrated to the US from Dublin. It's possible, unlikely, but possible I am a distant relative to the MacDonalds. History and etymology are a powerful tool when used correctly.

The final comment you made, that the average American of Scottish ancestry knew more of the traditions than the average Scottsman isn't too hard to believe. Those of us from European heritage that wasn't Anglo (Scandinavian, Irish, German, Italian, Greek, etc) who grew up with those first generation immigrants have made an effort to keep those traditions and cultures alive and a part of us, not just for history or ancestry, but to honor those whom we love and miss. I grew up in a family apartment building in Chicago with my parents, grandparents (grandma was 1st Gen American, grandpa from Öland) and my great grandparents who were from Öland and Katrineholm. I learned to speak Swedish from them, their culture and grew up in the Swedish/American circles in Chicago in events they went to. I'm also half Irish and proud of that beyond "Let's get drunk on St Patrick's Day". America is a melting pot, but some of us still cling to those things that give us our subculture, where we came from, and the people who built our country we have today and loved their new land as much as they missed their old one. If we didn't have that, we'd be left with whatever "culture" Hollywood and the policians tell us we're allowed to have and I'll be damned before me and mine will bend that revisionist knee.

A cult combined with politics but we could call the SJW's a religion rather than a cult so... Communists are generally atheists but this new breed we have are a cult and could possible be construed as a religion, based on the Chosen Ones (Neo-Marxist Communists, Racists who pretend to be Anti-Racists who use Minorities as pawns, Backstabbing Cowards who hate America, etc..) , the Original Sin of White Privilege, The Gospels of Drag Queen Story Hour...

Growing up, I didn't learn about my family heritage of the Morrison clan (whose name has changed over time in history, as all do), but when I was an adult my father and I looked into it and I've been so intrigued and saddened by the history of it all. I'm proud to be a descendent of Scotland, and I'm glad to have kept the same brazen attitude of the Highlands like so many others here in the Southern United States (which has a LOT of Scot and Irish heritage, even down to our accent which originated with Scottish settlers, which is why we tend to be able to understand thick Scottish accents better than other English speakers)

Ishikawa Goemon. -his samurai father was killed -he swore revenge, and became a ninja. -got kicked out cuz he banged his sensei’s wife -essentially became a Japanese Robin Hood HERE IS THE MAD LAD PART when he was captured. He and his first born son were sentenced to be boiled alive in oil. He took it like a man. holding his son above his head as long as he could, when he could no longer stand. He killed his son himself, as to spare him the agony.

A poem/song my Grandma used to sing me: “Oh cruel is the snow that sweeps Glencoe And covers the grave o' Donald And cruel was the foe that raped Glencoe And murdered the house o' MacDonald They came through the blizzard, we offered them heat A roof ower their heads, dry shoes for their feet We wined them and dined them, they ate o' our meat And slept in the house O' MacDonald They came from Fort William with murder mind The Campbell had orders, King William had signed Pit all tae the sword, these words underlined And leave none alive called MacDonald They came in the night when the men were asleep That band of Argyles, through snow soft and deep. Like murdering foxes, among helpless sheep They slaughtered the house o' MacDonald Some died in their beds at the hands of the foe Some fled in the night, were lost in the snow. Some lived to accuse him, what struck the first blow But gone was the house of MacDonald”.

I didn’t know European history was so violent. All of this is kind of glanced over, at least it was in the schools I was in. It was kinda like: “They had some wars: 7 years long, 10 years long etc, but lots of prosperity and then they had Winston Churchill and The Beetles. Okay let’s move on! Anybody wanna learn about the trail of tears or Salem witch trials again? Did we talk about ‘nam yet today?”

@Slawa Boga While the causes of the wars is more classical as Count mentioned, some of the acts committed were far from controlled. The throwing away of men's lives in the interest of a named man who never cared for them must be mentioned as well. Sprinkled among the travesties are moments of honor and courage by lords and downtrodden. Both aspects are able to teach a lesson and should be open for honest discussion and beneficial exposure. America as well. When it comes to killing people, no hand comes away clean. I would certainly listen to the Count give a blunt account of any event he saw fit, but I think he seems motivated to teach about his people to his people, and I find that honorable.
