Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Levi Roots joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
#Channel4 #Countdown
BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

186 same way. Tip here is either multiply or divide the totals to get a scenario to get a different total. 93x2 =186 (not so obvious at first but when you realise it makes getting a number of math puzzles answered)

On 519, Philip did not declare when he realised he had "used the 7 twice" but there were two 7s in the selection. Had he in fact solved it?

I was just thinking that. Why didn't someone point out that there were two 7s when he said that?

If he's smart enough to appear on the show and do well, I'm sure he probably did realise he made an error and used three 7s.

Incredible - a time where a 1 large is actually impossible and 3 away was the best you could do! Don't often see that on a 1 large - I blame those two 1s!

152 is made quite simpler when you realise it’s divisible by 8; 25-6=19 19*8=152 Or if you fancy another solution; 5+1=6 100/25*6*6=144 144+8=152

In the first numbers round, I saw Stephanie's solution and there's also an available solution from 3 below, but I think they're the only two. 9 x 8 = 72 72 - 9 = 63 75 + 63 = 138 1 + 1 = 2 138 x 2 = 276 In the second numbers round, I had a couple of solutions based on factorization of the target (19 x 2^3 = 152). First, the two-step solution: 25 - 6 = 19 19 x 8 = 152 But I also had these other ways of getting 19: 100 / 5 = 20 20 - 1 = 19 19 x 9 = 152 100 / 25 = 4 6 x 4 = 24 24 - 5 = 19 19 x 8 = 152 In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and also had this one: 7 + 6 = 13 13 x 2 = 26 100 - 26 = 74 74 x 7 = 518 518 + 1 = 519 Like the first numbers round, I think this is the only alternative. At least I couldn't see any others. In the final numbers round, I saw Philip's solution but there were some fancier solutions available if one wanted to avail oneself of them. First, one of the basic 4-large tricks is that you can make 30 out of the four large numbers alone: 75 x 50 = 3750 100 + 25 = 125 3750 / 125 = 30 30 + 1 = 31 31 x 6 = 186 And there are a couple more ways of making 31 with the four large numbers and a 1: 75 + 1 = 76 100 / 25 = 4 76 / 4 = 19 50 - 19 = 31 31 x 6 = 186 75 + 50 = 125 125 - 1 = 124 124 x 25 = 3100 3100 x 6 = 18600 18600 / 100 = 186 And you can also do these: 100 - 6 = 94 94 x 50 = 4700 4700 - 75 = 4625 4625 / 25 = 185 185 + 1 = 186 50 + 1 = 51 100 x 51 = 5100 75 x 6 = 450 5100 - 450 = 4650 4650 / 25 = 186 The logic of these solutions is that when divided by the 25, 50 becomes 2, 75 becomes 3, and 100 becomes 4. So the first solution, simplified, is (100 - 6) x 2 - 3 + 1 = 186, and the second is (50 + 1) x 4 - 6 x 3 = 186.

No. People sometimes like to use all the digits to be fancy, but it's not required and gets no extra points.

I’ve always heard it RES-er-vor. It’s fascinating how loan words can have different pronunciations in British and American English. For another example, look at jalapeño.

Funnily enough, both the British and Canadians use the original French pronunciation of reservoir…I guess the Americans “anglicized” it.
