BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

That first round was easy in several ways, because it could also be factored as 17 x 7 x 5 = 595, leading to these solutions: 75 + 10 = 85 5 + 2 = 7 85 x 7 = 595 75 + 10 = 85 3 x 3 = 9 9 - 2 = 7 85 x 7 = 595 75 + 10 = 85 5 x 2 = 10 10 - 3 = 7 85 x 7 = 595 In the second round, I saw Rachel's solution and also that you didn't even need the 75 but could solve it as "five-small": 9 x 5 = 45 45 + 2 = 47 47 x 7 x 3 = 987 And I also had these solutions based on multiplying by 12: 9 - 2 = 7 75 + 7 = 82 7 + 5 = 12 82 x 12 = 984 984 + 3 = 987 75 + 7 = 82 9 + 3 = 12 82 x 12 = 984 5 - 2 = 3 984 + 3 = 987 Two different ways of doing the same thing. In the third numbers round, though I saw her solution as well, I'm astonished that Rachel didn't mention that factoring the target gives you a really easy solution, given the existence of two 6's: 6 / 6 = 1 4 - 1 = 3 75 + 10 = 85 85 x 3 = 255 If you want to do something fancy with it, you can also do this (and use all the numbers): 8 - 6 = 2 75 + 10 = 85 85 x 2 = 170 170 x 6 = 1020 1020 / 4 = 255 And Colm could have had the correct answer with his starting point by using the above technique of employing the smaller numbers to make ratios: 75 x 4 = 300 10 x 6 x 6 = 360 360 / 8 = 45 300 - 45 = 255 The logic being that 45 is 3 / 4 of 60, and 6 is 3 / 4 of 8. Instead of 47 x 7 x 3 = 987, you could have also done 75 - 7 = 68 followed by 68 x 5 = 340 and then - 2 - 9 to get to 329, which you then multiply by 3 to get to 987. Did you see 329 x 3 or 47 x 21 though? It was divisible by 3 and 7, so spotting the 21 would be possible. Just curious because it's not obvious from your writeup.

I'm not trying to be overly critical but your notation for 255 is a bit of a mess, in future I'd suggest doing each calculation on a separate line. That makes it easier for a novice to follow.

You're not supposed to know what 141 x 7 is; however, you should see that 987 is divisible by either 7 or 3 but not 2, 5, or 9. So it'll be either 7 x 141 or 3 x 329. From there you got a 75 and a 2 to double it to get to 150, which is really close to 141. There's the obvious 9 then or you could have gone with 75 - 5 = 70 and doubled that for 140 and then looked for a 1, which you could get by doing 3 + 7 = 10 and then 10 - 9 = 1. I really see no issues in getting this answer in way under 30 seconds if you know your basic divisibility rules... did you know that 987 was divisible by 7 though?

You don’t, you work backwards from what you have. In this example. Rachel would know that 98 * 10 is a multiple of 7 and so is 7. Then you just divide it to get 14 * 10 + 1. So the problem simplifies down to 141 out of 75,3, 2, 9 and 5. Which you can do by getting to 150 with the 75 and the 2. You could also do 47 * 3 * 7 and make up the 47 with the 9,5 and 2 even without the 75.

The 255 was actually easy (assuming it is possible) - the only way to get to an odd number was to add the 75 last, so you know right from the start that you need to get 180 with the rest of the numbers.

Or you could do (75+10)*6 for 510, then you have an 8/6/4 - any 2 from them 3 could be used to make a 2 to divide the 510 by
