Colin Murray and Rachel Riley host as contestants race against the clock to pit their wits against vowels, consonants and numbers. Grace Dent joins Susie Dent in Dictionary Corner. Each day two contestants compete in 15 rounds of words and numbers to become the Countdown Champion.
#Channel4 #Countdown
BACKGROUND
Countdown is the channel’s longest running show and the first show ever broadcast on Channel 4 when it launched 40 years ago, in November 1982. The original version of Channel 4's Countdown is the French television programme « Des chiffres et des lettres » (literally "numbers and letters"), where the Numbers Round is referred to as « Le compte est bon » ("the total is right"). The show debuted in 1965 as « Le mot le plus long » using letters only, and reached its present format in 1972. This year marks the shows 51st anniversary.

SPIN-OFF
"8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown" is hosted by Jimmy Carr, with Rachel Riley and Susie Dent assuming their Countdown roles. The formation of the crossover with "8 Out if 10 Cats" began as a series of specials, the first of which was broadcast on 2 January 2012, when Channel 4 orchestrated a special "mash-up night", merging two shows to form a special edition of the pair, as part of its 30th-anniversary celebrations eleven years ago.

This guy is one of my favourite hosts of recent years. I enjoy his wholesome dad energy and I feel he adds just enough personality to the show without it taking away from the game. He just seems like a nice man.

For 692 my method was Rachel’s, no change there. For 156 I played on a variation on a theme of Ben’s method; 25*8=200 200-50+3+3=156 For 719, that was the only method I could work out in the 30 seconds but, there could have been a few solutions. For 317 I toyed around with the idea of a 4L method and eventually you can find it; 75-10=65 65*100=6500 6500/25=260 260+50+7=317

In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, but another solution is: 50 x 6 = 300 300 / 100 = 3 75 + 3 = 78 78 x 9 = 702 702 - 10 = 692 I think those are the only two. In the second round, I had a solution along the same lines as Ben's, but I did it this way: 7 - 3 = 4 8 / 4 = 2 50 + 2 = 52 52 x 3 = 156 Which can also be redone this way: 50 + 25 + 3 = 78 7 - 3 = 4 8 / 4 = 2 78 x 2 = 156 And another solution was: 3 / 3 = 1 25 + 1 = 26 50 - 8 = 42 42 / 7 = 6 26 x 6 = 156 In the third numbers round, I saw the contestants' solution, and this was the only meaningfully different solution I could see: 50 + 2 = 52 52 x 7 x 2 = 728 728 - 9 = 719 In the final numbers round, though there's no point to it, you can do a couple of alternative solutions, as follows: 75 - 10 = 65 100 / 25 = 4 65 x 4 = 260 260 + 50 + 7 = 317 100 / 25 = 4 10 - 4 = 6 50 + 6 = 56 56 x 7 = 392 392 - 75 = 317

My method of getting numbers seems so complicated compared to some of the contestants. Really wish I knew how their heads work. e.g last round : for 317 25*10 = 250. sq root of 100 = 10 50+10+7 = 67 250+67=316 seeing them go 75/25 = 3 , 3*100 plus the other numbers seems so much simpler.
@deepdrag8131

Complicated??? Try this: 50 plus 8 times 3 is 174 minus 25 is 149 plus 7 is 156. And I have to walk around with this brain of mine all day every day!
