sadly, he will be heading back to FL end of the week. In 2004 we had 4 hurricanes in one month.. This year, we had a torrential rain..no wind, Then Debbie dropped another 17 inches on us, Helena "only" dropped 15...and now Milton is heading in. No offence to Tampa...but its really their turn...Sarasota county just cant take it. All of the keys are still underwater, all of the snowbirds want to head back soon., and tourist season is very close. They ARE the economy in southwest FL

We don't have a lot of space for food storage, so I started stacking Costco storage bins (black with yellow lids) under the stairs. Each one contains a week's worth of food for my family of 5. I include a notecard with the list of meals that i can make with the contents of each bin. Then I mark the outside of the bin with the week it corresponds to. I then keep a spreadsheet of all the bins and their contents so I know what's in each one. This has really helped me to be organized in a smaller space.

I spent yesterday getting good, heavy locks for my gates, and a neighbor figured put how to keep my heavy metal gates from coming off the hinges. Got more cans of tomatoes on sale (I think I can eat anything as long as there are tomatoes). Early Christmas shopping: new mattress and pillow covers, a new non-stick frying pan, and a middle sized pot for noodles or pasta (from Salvation Army). We received at our local senior food bank corn for polenta, which my mother would make and cover with spaghetti sauce. I used the recipe on the bag and it was fantastic! My neighbor didn't want it, but I got a treasure. Found the company and ordered 10 pounds of it. Got more cat food and litter. Have to check feed for chickens and goats. Have to finish putting together another very heavy duty metal shelving unit and put a pork shoulder in the oven to slow roast. With your help, I think I'm good for QUITE SOME TIME!! Thanks! 😊

Simple meals: Choose pasta, rice, or potatoes. Add some leftover or canned meat. Toss in your choice of veggie. Cook it all together with your favorite herbs. Figure out what kind of sauce to add: garlic & olive oil, tomato sauce, cream soup, plain ol' milk, maybe some kind of cheese. The options are as endless as your imagination. Great Value canned chicken, canned spinach, any pasta, some powdered milk. You now have Chicken Florentine. Part of a can of Keystone beef, powdered brown gravy, egg noodles. Optional mushrooms. There's your Beef Stroganoff. Great Value scalloped potatoes, a small can of ham bits or a bit of Spam, a can of corn, powdered milk. There's a comforting meal in one pan. Thats how I plan my beans and rice. 8 cups of each per day for 8 people, plus 8 cups of salsa to season it. That was the easiest new-to-prepping meal I planned my first month. That plus a cup of oatmeal per day per person with brown sugar and powdered milk still make up a huge portion of my emergency food storage. Lots more diversity since then, but it’s the easiest thing to can plus the cheapest thing to stock, plus you don’t have to be a great cook to make it taste edible.

We have been prepping for a while now. Moved to the country and raise/grow our own food. I HATE meal prep. I hate trying to come up with food to eat from our preps. We live in CA, and we have lost power for a week at a time, running the genny 24/7 isn’t an option when gas is $5/gallon. All our cooking is propane, so not affected by power loss. A few years ago I started writing down the receipts I used when cooking from my preps. I made a star chart for how well the family liked it. That also gave me an idea of what I need more of. More canned beans, more canned vegetables, more canned broth. Less canned meat as I have more than I realized. More canned chili and canned soups. Homemade, home canned soup is a quick, easy meal that is tasty when the day without power has been a long one.

Did our BIG freezer stock up yesterday on beef, pork, bacon etc.. Took me three hours to get it all vaccuum sealed in freezer bags and into freezer. My hubby fishes year round so we have another freezer half full of halibut, salmon, tuna, lingcod, and rock fish. Such a huge prep for us and so grateful for it. Just need to get chicken this week and Im done meat shopping for 6 months. Hopeful for a good hunting season for deer and elk too.

@@jillking-miller4257 that's awesome. So many people talk about full freezers and how they are prepared but then you hear them telling about how they lost it all in a power outage. I've changed the way I shop after a 2 day outage from an unbelievable storm. No backups here sadly. I don't buy much meat, I buy smaller bottles of condiments so less waste if power does go out. I really learned a lot just from those 2 days.

Did some “grocery” shopping in the last 2 days and found myself buying a few more canned goods as well as various seasonings (no fresh foods, it was just pantry prep). And here you are, talking about seasonings tonight! Oddly, I looked for barley and found nothing but Quaker small packages. No lentils. The hunt continues…. The past few days I have been gathering recipes for my comm’l canned proteins. Half my hems are molting and I’m getting days with zero eggs…ack. I now have a wood heating stove and will be placing my order for seasoned hardwood this week. Almost ready. YOU are FABULOUS❤. Thank you, Leisa!

They are cheap and keep you alive . Food fatigue is an issue but only if youre alive long enough to care. We have several different cooking methods. Several single canister single butner types, a coleman stove, and one ofthose huge stand up propane 2 butner cook top, plus a little coleman oven to bake bisquits, bread, and treats, blankets for "kettle-type" cooking, with 4 20 lb propane tanks. And other types of bottled gases. We have a buddy heater blankets and tents in case we lose power and need to block off and heat a smaller area. Have solar loghts, battery lights, and lots of batteries. Desperately waiting for the money to come in the mail for my shelving units to organize my 2nd bedroom/extended pantry. I know I have so mich food in there, dehydrated, freeze dried, canned and dry. I just really need it organized so I can find things when we need them!!! 😮 Already bought more meats to can including 14 pounds of tuna, so it can get shelf stable. I can continue to can even through hard times as long as we dont lose power. Even then, I have ways to can food, rather than let it spoil. I need more lids I have plenty of jars and bands. Lots of seeds for sprouting in case we can't get fresh greens. I love sprouts all bu themselves. Hundreds of pounds of grains, rice, beans, yellow and white dent corn, masa harina, barley, oats, and potato flakes. Watching these poor souls lose everything has made me so grateful to be prepared. Unfortunately, for many kf of them, they lost all their preps too, so thats always a thing...😢 We really have no way to bug out as I'm in a wheelchair, so we plan on hunkering down unless there's a fire, or something like that forces us out of our apartment. Have ways to colse of eindows and doors with things already planned to move in front of them to stop intruders. Have protection and ammo and all my buckets can line the walls to help protect against bullets. Our issues will be controlled medication's, and having to leave our home cuz there's no way we could take our preps with us. I will continue to can the foods we've already stockpiled in our freezers and buckets. We easily have enough to make it for probably a year other than water. But we have the means to purify water if needed, in additin to what we slready have stored. Being in an apartment makes all this a little more challenging but it can be done. Where theres a eill theress a way!!! Ive got stuff stashed everywhere it cAn possibly be stashed. I don't even care ehat oeople anymore I've got at least 20 buckets lining the walls going down the entire hallways filled with food stuff. So Ive mostly got all the things now I can soend the entire winter converit. Yhem to shelf stable meals on top of what we already have. Maybee be safe, healthy and ready for whatever this season will bring us. The major wildfires we have in our area are the closet thing I can imagine to what's happening to everyone with hurricane Helene, they totally wipe out everything, homes, cars, and totally change the landscape forever!!! 😢 The best we can ever do is try to be prepared and pray for all the rest I wish everyone the very best friends 💗💯💗

Thank you, Leisa, for this video! I wasn't as prepared as I should be, but we are fine, and even had food and water for others. Thank You to Everyone who has helped, sent help, prayed. The sounds and sights of the helicopters and planes are reminders and emphasizers of how life-saving, sanity-saving, preparedness is. Helicopters were flying well into the night last night, again. This morning, a bunch of very long empty horse trailers passed me on the road and some small horse trailers. Trucks pulling open trailers, some with supplies, equipment, some empty. Muddy trucks. SUVs. My Daughter and I took a little drive yesterday. I can't bear to see the devastation. Not only because of the devastation, but what it means. I can't take pictures. It's like photographing a dead person. Photographing people's dire straits. Photographs do need to be taken. Yes! Proof of what did happen, what can happen, what is happening. I guess, for me, it's shock and how I'm reacting to it. Whoever that can document this, please do! Y'all, please listen to Leisa. Please, get prepared. Learn skills. Please, stay alert, vigilant, safe! If something does come through and destroys all you have, if enough of us are prepared, we can help pull each other through it. Take care. May God Have Mercy On Us All.

Great tips, sending this to friends and family. We live in a sunny state but lose power many times a year, evacuated at least 1-3 times a year.. We use portable panel solar cookers and a solar box/oven to conserve gas/propane. People often forget to think about different cooking methods/ devices to use for cooking in various emergency situations. Another way to conserve fuel is by using thermal cookers ( retained heat.) My point is If you don't have enough fuel or power to cook, or most importantly to boil water, what will you do? Think about what will work best in your region, environment, season, shelter. Even adding a simple inexpensive alcohol stove + fuel to boil water, cook canned food , will make a huge difference during a stressful time. Our support and prayers are on going for those affected by Helene. 🙏😢

You are so right! My neighbors think I'm crazy for cooking in my solar oven like I do. I also have my Camp Chef stove out to cook/can on during uber hot days as it's just too hot to can indoors. It's just the small 2 burner with oven, but it works great. I tend to use my thermal cooker more in the winter, especially if I'm working crazy hours. I think more people will start seriously using alternative methods of cooking as the price of fuels and electricity continue to rise. Our electricity is currently $.59 (59 cents) per kwatt at it's cheapest with propane at $3.70 per gallon. I try to encourage everyone to be very conservative in their energy use and to explore alternative ways of cooking.

I've been watching a lot of channels talking about hurricane damage. If that isn't a wake-up call to prep, then I don't know what is. Please remember too that sometimes you can never prepare enough and sometimes you can still lose it all. Rely on God all of the time. Strengthen that relationship with Him. We decided our solar generators were not going to provide the power we would need, so we bought a dual gas generator and two large canisters of propane. I've heard too, that some of the people in the hills of the hurricane devastation are hijacking cars and trucks who are bringing in supplies. Desperate people do desperate things. What would you do if they came for your supplies, plan now.

If you have a freezer buy enough bread for a month and put it in the freezer.. there are a lot of limitations in a SHTF scenario that even if you know how to cook, you may not be able to. Tortilla wraps are also a good choice, store in a metal tin to keep fresh like a popcorn tin. Saltine Crackers for both soups and can be used for things like peanut butter and jelly or a meat spread. Instant pancake mix can also be used as a wrap for something like hot dogs or peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Anna In Ohio

We also went out and got black out curtains. Helps a lot in more ways than one. Think of heat sources as well due to cold weather is just right around the corner. We made this a part of our preps. Look on a map to see where all the water sources are at just in case you have to venture out to get water. Keep maps on hand and I know you have said this before. I have thought of this too there are a lot of areas around the country that are dying towns, house prices are cheap low crime etc but no hospitals, no grocery stores in their towns, no libraries and I'm a widow now but Oh it sounds so tempting I am retired so money isn't the issue but all the things we take for granted living remotely is a challenge. My sister lived on 14 acres in the country and when she was pregnant we were worried during a snow storm how they would even be able to get out to the main road we kind of laughed and said they'd have to send someone in by ski mobile to get her.. thankfully it didn't happen but even that short of a distance off a main road was worrisome. They were snowed in for over a week, no water ( no electric) even though they were on well.. her husband brought in snow and melted it they had a kerosene heater. They put up a tent in the center of the room and they all stayed in the tent including mother in law. They now live on a 9 acre land but civilization has moved closer to them and they aren't so far away from the main road. Anna In Ohio

That's an issue as we age. When we were looking for a house in 2019, my hubby said he wanted at least an acre. What we bought is a half acre and he complains about having to maintain it. I keep reminding him he said he wanted more😂. But lots of land needs management. Where we live, cedar trees and some noxious weeds are a real issue. Those need to be kept in check. The idea is wonderful, but it can be a lot of work

Being somewhat remote at an older age sounds tempting but definitely try for a happy medium. If there is no hospital where you’re looking, look for how close the ambulance service is. An ambulance can keep you stable to get you to a hospital. Look at the “what if” scenario. If you have mobility issues at some point, think about how far your mailbox is or if fedex/ups will deliver on your porch. I have a close friend who is unable to go to her mailbox and depends on the neighbors to get her mail and take her trash. If a box is too large or fedex leaves it elsewhere on the property, her neighbors have to get it for her. Look at Walmart delivery to that area for groceries if needed. People think they want gardens and they are an awesome addition….but with weather and animals (rabbits, deer, moles, gophers, bugs), it’s not always easy to walk away with much. Look to the outskirts of town for lower taxes and possibly a well. The well doesn’t even have to be your primary water source but can be used to water grass, the garden and livestock and you can use it in an emergency. An acre or two is more than plenty for the average person. Look for property next to wooded areas, pasture land where people have hay or have cattle and tree farms that will give you privacy but you’re still close to civilization. I hope this helps a little in getting your thoughts together. ❤

Grid-down Corn Chowder-- (room temperature ingredients) take a packet of sausage gravy mix, follow the directions, add a can of chicken, 2 cans corn or creamed corn, onion and garlic powder to taste, heat till everything is warm.

You are a gem, I love learning and being reminded of things I have overlooked. You are the reason I learned canning this past year. Thank you❤

I've learned through living in Tampa to prepare for several scenarios. When Irma hit us head on, my neighborhood was only without power for 24 hours. However, there was no produce in the stores for a full month and I live on salad. So now I stay ready with "bad food" as well.

Practice using seasonings differently. Italian seasoning and garlic on pinto beans is delicious! I tried to see how I can change up rice and beans and feel like I’m eating something different. I’m going to try Zaatar seasoning for Mediterranean flavor or Masala for an Indian flavor on them next. Chicken bullion or beef bullion for another flavor, molasses and BBQ sauce for another. Ranch dressing, Tomato sauce, or ketchup for another, taco seasoning or fajita seasoning for another, teriyaki sauce and pineapple for another. You could have beans and rice daily but have a variety of flavors.

Balsamic vinegar, brown sugar in savory dishes, elderflower syrup....Definitely learn how to make your own teriyaki or Gen. Tso's sauces! Changing up the flavors of otherwise bland and boring foods makes a big difference.

Just wanted to mention a few things we do. Instead of just filling a tub with water, get a water bob...they hold about 100 gallons. Perfect for flushing toilet or filling a bucket for sanitation. I also discovered Scrubzzz..just a splash of water and you have lather to freshen up with...best part is you wipe it off with a towel. They work great! Instead of Bisquik..try Krusteaz pancake mix...only need water. And now is the time to satisfy your sweet tooth prep with all the Halloween candy!
