Prompted by the recent Hurricane Helene that hit Florida and other states along with our trip to the Oregon Coast, which is a tsunami zone, we decided to pull out our But Out Buckets and check them. If our lives were to depend on the contents of these buckets, we have work to do to reorganize and replace many items.

Good morning. We live in WNC, and we're just hit EXTREMELY hard by aftermath of Hurricane Helene. So many lost homes and billions of dollars in damage. Many still without power and no cell service unless they can get out and drive to places with Starlink. We lost power for 7 days and couldn't get out for 2 days, but God's grace and great friends were able to drive to check on family. The things that helped us going a lot was preparations I have learned on your site! Thank you, and carry on! Please remember our small town because several lives were lost!

Where I live, there would be shelters within a reasonable distance. But our household evacuation plan is to avoid shelters if at all possible, there are safety considerations if you have to go to a shelter. I also have dogs to evacuate with us, so are fully prepared in case there is no safe shelter for humans and dogs together. (for anyone with pets, it is well worth doing some training and practice with them in case of emergency. Crate training, travel crate training. Leash training, muzzle training)

How about making your primary buckets the Home Depot orange buckets. Then get another color, Menards Green, Walmart Blue, Harbor Freight Red for your secondary bugout buckets and then another color for your tertiary buckets. You'll always know what buckets to grab 1st, 2nd and third. Also, cut a 6 inch PVC 1/2" or 3/4" to go on to the handles of the buckets to make them easier to carry.

The buckets show how far you’ve come and what you learned for bugging out. It also is an example of checking regularly and updating prepping. Example those 3 flashlights, and you said, “what in the world?” back when you first packed those buckets, lighting was important but your knowledge has grown and better tools for emergency prepping are available.

We mostly used toolboxes with handles on the top and sides and sturdy latches for our camping / evacuation supplies. We bought a bunch of them from Canadian Tire when they were on sale years ago. They are approximately 18x12x12 inches. They are designed to stack on top of each other and there's less wasted space in our vehicle, and our axe slide nicely between them (they're a little narrower at the bottom than top.

Square 4 gal food grade buckes ( you can get used for about 4$ each. ) are much better choice, less heavy, easier to carry not banging your leg, stackable. And the internal corners really make more space. Also when used in combination with a lage wheel hand truck. Stack better, much more manageable. Cheers.

This video was a good reminder for all of us to double check our ‘To-Go’ bags / buckets a couple times a year or seasonally. I also like the idea of having some supplies - like cooking gear - already packed in the car. Those kinds of things wont be impacted by seasonal weather changes in your car, but would be something you would want to have in a bug out scenario. If it’s already in the car, one less thing to haul out there. Thanks for this (honest!!) video; looking forward to the follow-up revamp of your bug-out buckets!

Put a copy of ID in a bucket, along with list of emergency phone numbers of your family members. Small notebook and a couple of pens to leave note on vehicle in case you had to leave it behind.

I never thought to use buckets - that's a great idea. I know I couldn't carry a 50 lb backpack (and I'm only 56!) and walk miles and miles. With buckets, you can walk a short distance then stop and rest by sitting ON the buckets too. You definitely got me thinking about what our biggest threat is in my area. We're not in tornado alley, we don't get blizzards (we get snow, but blizzards are extremely rare), we're not near the ocean, there's a small river not far from us but to my knowledge, it has never flooded as high as our property is located, we don't get earthquakes... Probably the river is our biggest threat.

These are great ideas for bug out buckets; thanks for sharing these. A couple of additions that I would make--add water purification tablets to the water bottle bucket, a fire suppression blanket to the cooking bucket, and I learned the hard way to store the batteries separate from the flashlights, in case of corrosion. After recently experiencing Hurricane Francine in South Louisiana, I found that the batteries had corroded in the lantern, rendering it all useless.

I’ve worked in a special needs hurricane shelter. Cots were provided, but no pillows or blankets. You have to bring your own and many did not bring anything, expecting it to be provided. This was set up in the corridor of a high school. Meals were provided. Generators went out during the night and the local sewer system went down by five in the morning, preventing us from flushing toilets. Not fun! My parents just evacuated to our home because hurricane Milton is making a beeline for their area. You can get Life Straws to use to filter drinking water. It will definitely change in the first few days/weeks. with the new ready-set-go system the government has in place you may have different time allotments to pack. the list is such a blessing when your running around grabbing things. It will also make bug out set up more comprehensible.

So that is when I review every year. There is no way to know if the situation would be sheltering at home with public services are down (water, sewer, power) OR if our home would be safe to stay (depends on the location of the epicenter.) I have grab and go kits in the house, in the car, and long term shelter-in-place storage to try and cover for each situation.

You're right about preparing for disasters specific to your area. For my area, the most common disasters are wild fires & maybe a stray tornado here & there. However, there could be unexpected disasters that defy prediction such as the Polar Vortex that struck as far south as South Texas & large hurricanes that chugged inland as far north & west as Dallas. Who could have foreseen the terrible freezes in 2021 & 2022 or a far reaching hurricane like Harvey? So I guess it would behoove us to prep for less likely disasters as well as the more common ones. Regarding people who refuse to evacuate, I have mixed feelings about that. I've hunkered down & sat out dozens of hurricanes in my lifetime. Believe it or not, evacuation is basically a rather new strategy. Decades ago, there were no government mandated evacuations. People stayed or left as they saw fit to do. Think about a worst case senario: a stray hurricane hits a major northeastern metropolitan area such as NYC... How could the authorities evacuate a city of millions of inhabitants who have traditionally relied upon public transportation & do not own a vehicle? Some people will say that a hurricane can never hit that far north... They also said that a devastating freeze could never hit South Texas, yet it did & not just once, but twice... The takeaway? Plan for the most likely disasters in your area. But also at least consider planning for unlikely & unusual disasters too.

I would think a survival preparedness food bucket like the ones sold at Costo would be reasonable to replace all of the individually packed food for three days. Also, it won’t spoil in a year or two as your home packed food did. You could eliminate one bucket as most of your food would be in the preparedness food bucket.

Not everyone has a vehicle to handle buckets, but if you do , you may want to consider having a pack ready to go in the car just in case you have to abandon your vehicle , such as in a fire...Fires for example can use up oxygen so much so your car may not drive, let alone the intense heat melting your tires etc.. We have light emergency backpacks in our cars, no more than15lbs each, but we can still run / walk with them as seniors....Just saying it's a good weight for nearly everyone, it can carry the necessities of surviving 24-72 hrs .

Don't forget to have important documents with you. You may also consider making digital copies and giving them to someone not living in the same area that you trust to keep them safe for you.

You are always so thorough.....love that! We have a yellow lidded black totes from Menards or Home Depot that we use specifically for cabin to and froms. I'm wondering if those might stack and secure on Blue better. Maybe put your clothing and personal items in duffels...double bagging the contents for waterproofing. They would squash down and allow more room for other things. Does blue have a hitcher receiver? You could get a hitch hauler and secure a couple of heavy totes as well.

My husband and I have even doing the same things.. Checking our big back pack, which I already have a list of what is in each one. Going over our car stuff. We only have the one car. We have clear totes with our survival things. Checking them out again. Dehydrated foods. Just an over all recheck on what we put together a few years ago. I have all listed on water proof paper, so I know what is in each numbered tote or pack. It does make you feel secure if you have these things ready. Even though you may never use them. I only have dehydrated foods and powdered drinks. We really don’t need a lot of extras in the food dept if we need to get out quick. Simple eating is not a problem for us. You have different ways of leaving which is nice. We do have an off road camper in a storage space but would have to go get that which is ten minutes away. Our car always has cooking utensils and stoves awaiting. Warm down jackets, stuffed in a stuff sack, down throws also. We have those survival big orange tubes to get into incase of rain, wind. Etc. Plus the small space blankets. We sometimes think we have too much but you never know. We will be prepared either at home or if we have to leave our home. I wonder if getting old makes us want to be more prepared? Ha! Younger people don’t seem to mind not being prepared for any disaster. It looks like you are well prepared or will be once you redo these buckets. We also have a means of keeping warm with fire. It may all be for not…but it certainly gives you a sense of comfort. Have fun redoing your totes. You are so prepared in any situation. I love to compare what we have done and what you’re doing. You are both an inspiration to us all. You both know how to do so many things. Just like my husband. I call him “ A Jack of all Trades”.. 💜💜 Bless you!

I suggested StarLink due to you living in a rural area and you may be limited to back roads in the event of a bug out situation. I think the cost is around $90 per month due to you being rural. It's much more expensive on the east side of the states due to available internet connections. However, I have found a cheaper option and that is Garmin. Garmin has a small device that looks like a mini walkie talkie. That might give you more comfort on the road or trails.

A good video! I have some items ready in a backpack but honestly I couldn’t carry that very far at 66 years old. My main concern is I can’t keep a lot in our truck because we live in southern Arizona where it gets hot in summer and cold in the winter. I do have some cartons of water that I purchased but that is not enough. Our space is limited inside the truck. We have a HUGE Cane Corso dog who takes up the backseat and I will NOT leave him behind. So I pack food for him as well. We have one vehicle too so I need to think more on what to do if he (my partner) is in town and I am home 😬

@LS-lb7pw 4 сағат бұрын
That can be a tough one to figure out, especially if you have to evac and your partner has the truck. I live in a very rural area an hour from any city, but I also have neighbors that help each other in times of trouble, evacuations. We have an evacuation plan as a group + everyone has a ham radio to call for help, as from experience we can't rely on cell phones You don't need a ham radio license to use it in an emergency either, so perhaps you, partner and a neighbor could have a plan for such situations. Just a thought.

@@LS-lb7pw thank you, we live rural and an hour from town. Our neighbors are good people but most are older than I am. I’m 66. None of us really know each other well, most are retired military so they are reliable but again it’s an area where all are retired people. I will look into the ham radio though. I know a neighbor to the south of us has a tower. I don’t know them at all but maybe it’s worth a ride over there to talk to them. One other issue we have here is we live on the border and most people are very on guard here. I wouldn’t just walk onto anyone’s property here.

Thanks for sharing! I have some similar items for bugout and this video has made me reconsider some lighter, freeze dried food packets that are lighter to carry, that will last longer also. I recently just switched out my tuna packets with some from Aldi's because they have the best price. I switch them out pretty regularly. I realize I will need to add water to the freeze dried meals, but I invested in a Katadyn pocket water filter that can pump the water into a container. Military guys use the Katadyn filter. It is a little pricey but it gives me piece of mind. I have life straws also. I will still put water with my bugout supplies, but that hopefully will be the heaviest thing to take.

I will be interested to see how you decide to store your pool shock. I discovered this weekend. That the ring and lid on the empty pint jar that I had stored with our pool shock completely corroded. Finding a safe method for storing pool shock long-term will be challenging but very important. Please let us know what you come up with.

My house would have to become COMPLETELY uninhabitable for me to leave. Our earthquake threat is very, very low, and the flood threat is even less, along with wildfire. Why anyone would leave as long as you had a ceiling and walls along with your preps to try to go out to the wilds when others are doing the same,(or out to harm you/rob you), is beyond me. We have get-home bags, although we are not without having things onhand to run out with should some unforeseen happenstance befall us.

Please plan thoroughly which food items to include. Even when it's only for a few days. The weather might be bad, you might get wet and cold. And then the stress and anxiety. You'll need protein, fat and carbohydrates. Way more calories than you usually consume at home. Would be good if you could make pemmican.

@@minniegibson8722 Pemmican? It's dried meat and berries, blended into powder and mixed with tallow. Native Americans prepared it for the winter. You can survive on it for a long time and it keeps for years. Kent Rollins has a nice no hassle recipe on his website and Pam and Jim have all the necessary equipment to prepare it.

Where I live, the biggest threat is civil unrest. There will be no bugging out. I live adjacent to a large city with some of the worst traffic in the US. Even at 11 pm. Even on the weekend. Even if there would be a bad hurricane, we wouldn’t make it the 3 miles to the highway. So we decided staying here is the only option. We are in our 70’s. No long hikes. Plus nowhere to go here except in traffic in my own neighborhood. I do have a bag for the car in the event I can’t get home due to weather. That happened to me decades ago when a surprise spring snowstorm hit. But the highway was a tangle of stuck cars. I was lucky to get off an exit and make it to a hotel. Along with a hundred others.
