In this video, the working of Counter Type ADC (Digital Ramp Type ADC) is explained.
By watching this video, you will learn the following topics:
1:11 Working of Counter Type ADC
3:20 Limitation/ Disadvantage of Counter Type ADC
Counter Type ADC:
This ADC uses the binary counter for the Analog to Digital Conversion. That's why it is known as the Counter Type ADC.
It consists of Comparator, Binary Counter, Digital to Analog Converter, Control Circuit and the Latches.
It is also known as Digital Ramp ADC because here the output of the DAC increases gradually in the ramp/staircase manner.
The drawback of Counter Type ADC:
The major drawback of this ADC is that after every conversion, the counter gets RESET and count starts from 0 onwards.
So, the conversion time depends on the magnitude of the input signal.
In this counter type ADC, there is a tradeoff between the resolution and the speed of the conversion.
Because the conversion time is given as Nx Tclk.
Where N is the binary count of the counter and Tclk is the clock speed.
As, the resolution or the number of bits of the counter or DAC increases, the conversion time will increases.
In this video, the working of this counter type ADC is explained in detail.
