It’s said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But not in the case of the counterfeit goods market, which has moved far beyond merely copying designer bags and clothing. No longer content to be just an economic menace, the counterfeiters are putting our health and safety at risk.
They have taken on the leading mobile phone brands, churning out copies containing batteries which explode in the face of the user. They have infected the pharmaceutical sector, peddling dangerous fakes of well known brands, like viagra, to unsuspecting consumers via the internet. They have attacked the automobile industry, producing poor quality imitation spare parts, from windscreens to brake pads. They have infiltrated the food market with mayonnaises, sodas and ready meals of dubious origin.
Who makes these fake products? How do they get into Europe? This enquiry takes us to China, Hong Kong, and Cambodia as we meet the counterfeiters and their opponents; crack teams of customs specialists who employ radical methods to stop this illegal practice which puts lives at risk.

As an electronics repairer and developer, I also get to deal a lot with fake electronics, such as chips, transistors and capacitors. Sometimes I can tell through testing if they are fake, but not always, the techniques they use to fake something are getting better and better. I have already seen more expensive devices broken by those fake components. I think the penalties are too low, they are not deterred enough and do more and more. Also the checks are still not done enough at customs 😡

I lived in sandwich back in the mid 80's, my father had a boat moored in sandwich and to get out to sea you had to sail down the river Pfizer's factory backed up against the river, the water was fine untill you got to the factory then it turned purple and absolutely stank, things have obviously moved on since then and some of my meds are made by pfizer but i've got a long memory, they went unchecked for years

I grew up living in the shadow of Monsanto Chemicals (Ruabon) in north wales. Many MANY people died of strange cancers. Monsanto shut shop and buggered off leaving a World Heritage Site with a contanimated scar. They made Agent Orange, amongs other shite there. It is a Ticking time bomb before these dumped chemicals leech into the River Dee underneath thomas Telfords Pontcysyllte Aqueduct. My father was a delivery driver for them, and drove a 10 ton Bedford flatbed truck for many years delivering chemicals of all sorts in Paper Sacks. He died of a very rare form of cancer in his nose.
