I think one of the biggest issues are going to stem from companies using Viz and other real company logos to really counterfeit. You heard it here first.

Counterfeit manga has, thankfully, not risen the the point where you need to be extremely aware and careful of your online purchases(this is not the case with other products such as watches and Yeezy’s). I pray that counterfeit manga doesn’t blow up because if it does, the fakes will only become more convincing and consumers won’t be able to casually shop secondhand sites anymore

Fakes are a problem. However, that is publishers problem, not regular buyers'. This doesn't affect me since I usually buy a few volumes per month, but I'll put myself in those people's shoes. If I want something physically, and my only options are to get from scalpers for ~$1k or to get the fake ones which are, from what I hear, in quite decent quality, I'll be getting the fake ones 100%. Stuff I buy I buy for myself, I don't care about selling them in any point, so RoI is of no interest to me. In the end, it's the publishers job to provide to readers and to stop the fake ones. From my perspective, I'm only interested in the product, in good enough quality, regardless of whom I'm getting it from. Fakes are not different from self-prints in any way. You said "people who buy self prints would buy the manga if it was published in English", well sure, I can use the same logic and say "people would buy the official ones if they were reprinted". Both are bad, but I don't blame the buyers, I blame the publishers. They need to listen to their readers more, they need to put more stuff out, and they need to get rid of the fake ones. People are there to BUY and collect, and that's what they do.

Appreciate your comments on self printing. As someone in that community, we are really strict about destroying links once official licenses are made. That along with banning people who resell have allowed that community to thrive. But yeah, I wish publishers balanced reprinting their older series vs releasing new stuff. Yen Press honestly has been the best with reprinting older series as of late surprisingly.

My younger brother, 16, nearly brought those exact same Slam Dunk Volumes. He thought it was a little sketchy. Glad he got me to have a look before he purchased them. I admit it is getting out of hand on Ebay. But overall it isn't too much of a problem just on ebay.

As a Malaysian i deeply apologize on our "seller" who sell copy print and sell them expensively on the internet.. our country does this a lot whether its scamming or lying about their product..you just need to careful how to detect which are the counterfeits,but there is also the case where shogakukan asia has license to their some manga such as mob psycho 100,komi cant communicate,zom 100 and frieren. I bought both the publisher to see the difference,Western publisher are have more quality then Shogakukan Asia quality.

Im from Malaysia. I bought a few of these indie publishers. They are bad some paper are super thin,some use glossy paper. We do have an asian publisher call Shogakukan Asia which has license to a few of these manga with good quality such,they have teasing takagi,frieren,komi cant communicate,zom 100 and so on. Just need to do a bit of research.

Being born in Malaysia, seeing counterfeit CDs, Games, toys etc is the norm. The government says they’re super serious about it but there are literal stores that sell only counterfeit goods and no one cares. Technology is expensive in Malaysia and I guess it makes sense to produce. Back in the day I’d always buy counterfeit CDs cause they cost much less and work but looking at it now, I almost feel embarrassed 😔 Lately I’ve been seeing banana fish manga fakes AS WELL AS DVDs???? The dvd claimed the series was PG… I- What?? If the government reviewed it it wouldn’t even be sold in Malaysia PERIOD.

I also do believe a lot of the purchases are people who want say Slam Dunk, but refuse to pay scalper prices when end of the day, the bootlegs are just as much a readable book as the viz ones

I recently saw a few pages on Instagram which are selling them . They even had the latest volume of kaiju no 8. Unlike the Malaysian one which doesn't show the actual publisher , here it shows the actual publishers name like viz , sj etc . Really terrifying. Here in India manga as it is is expensive so more customers need to be there for the price to go down but this counterfeit industry is slowly on the rise. These fake volumes are ultra cheap so their customer base is rising rapidly

Also in general, books are relatively cheap to buy in Malaysia as the government in the 60s (I think) wanted to increase literacy in the country. U can find books as cheap as 1 ringgit or a novel for 30 ringgit.

@@nelic2111 it should yes, I went to Malaysia several months ago and the prices were similar. The 1 RM books are more for stock clearing, they make it really cheap. You’re more likely to find them for 10 RM now or something similar

I've been seeing a lot of these manga from Malaysia, trying to track down a volume 6 of Teasing Takagi San and there's the whole lot listed from Malaysia. Fortunately if I see it's coming from Malaysia I automatically skip over it.

I live in Malaysia,i know about these fraud and indie publishers.There are some manga which are license from shogakukan asia,Takagi san is one of them. They tend to release volume earlier than western publisher like how Asia gotten Frieren vol 6 earlier then that western release. You just need to some research

If these Slam Dunk Malaysian prints are selling for this kinda money, Viz is either too dumb or too out of the loop of the manga community to see the demand for these classic series. The least they could do is come out and announce a complete reprint or something for these classic series. But from what I've seen, its radio silence from them. It honestly doesn't bother me if Viz loses potential consumers and income to these fake prints. People want slam dunk physical volumes, and these Ebay sellers are providing them the product that they want, while Viz ignores these consumers. When you ignore your customers, there will be someone who will capitalize off of your stupid business decisions. The thing that does bother me about these prints is that the Mangaka are definitely not making any money off of these sales, which is a big issue.

I don't think it's a huge problem because it seems pretty isolated but it's a problem that people who don't know are paying this kind of money for fake manga. I think it is an interesting point that publishers who are sitting on these series and could see the interest would take more priority in printing some of these older series but I understand it's not quite that simple with all the series and back logs and paper shortage blah blah! But I think publishers should be looking more closely at something like this because the demand for certain series are there, I know older series can be a risk but why not do surveys with transparent communication to let people know?

I mean a handful of Malaysian rip offs on eBay doesn’t really indicate huge interest lol obviously a lot of series do have fans wanting reprints but the only way companies will know is if they create a bunch of polls or questionnaires gauging how much interest there is
