I always wondered how those bits worked, thanks for the explanation

Really helpful; bought my first home this week, and trying to sort out the woodflooring, this has been invaluable

When you screw two boards together you should drill a clearance hole only in first board! That way you get a much tighter fit between boards.

or use partially threaded screw

Just a couple mm into the bottom board is good to assist

I like to drill deeper with the countersink until I can put a wooden plug on top of the screw it looks great when done correctly!

Is countersink bit size 12 mm the right size for a size 8 screw?
@ShopperPlug3 жыл бұрын
you should mention which countersink bit size is proper for counter sink screw size.

thanks! ´What I am looking to learn for days is, do all of these drill bits go in all of the drills machines? I already have a Bosch drill machine, but the hammer-action one, which works with electricity.I want to buy drill bits for this machine., and I need to know which bits go into it. because its base/rear-end slips/slides into the slot of Drill machine.
@zachthegreat68364 жыл бұрын
Software Test yes, they're all machined off of a 1/4 inch hex bit
@Claudg2008 Жыл бұрын
To smooth the wood in the conic hole you just made you may run your drill backwards for a few second.

I want to countersink a screw into sheet metal. Does the countersink bit have to be one that goes through metal? What I'm asking is, do all countersink bits go through metal too?
@AC3dAvE3 жыл бұрын
Not all bits are made for metal. The wood drill bit may be usable but not recommended. The countersink bit has to be the one to go through metal as they can also easily go through wood.
@mahmoodkhan66233 жыл бұрын
@@AC3dAvE hi Dave, is there a specific bit you can recommend from home Depot?
@felixf52113 жыл бұрын
@@mahmoodkhan6623 For metal, look for a Weldon zero flute countersink. They're not sold at hardware stores. You can find one at an industrial supply house/site, or on ebay. Good luck.

If I want to have one countersink, what size should I get?
@jimodell38223 жыл бұрын
That would depend on the size of the screw head. I would probably use a countersink bit on size over the width of the screw head so that I could sink the screw low enough to use wood putty and completely conceal it.
@saffronsworld15087 жыл бұрын
I am glad I took a wood shop class in high school where I learned what counter-sunk holes are. They allow for a screw's flat top to be recessed below the surface of the wood. That application I heard again later in life when I was in the U.S. Marine Corps. We guys referred to Women Marines as "countersunk Marines." Some of your viewers may not grasp my meaning, but then again, some will get a chuckle.

this is for v shaped screw head. how about for a flat screw head, what drill bit is used? countersink surely doesnt serve the purpose here
@ByWelly4 жыл бұрын
works the same, the idea is to create a shallow indented hole deep enough for the screw head to be burrowed beneath the surface area - which you would fill to conceal the screw for an aesthetically cleaner look and allow for painting
@docjonesy19683 жыл бұрын
You could use a forstner bit to perform your countersink for a flat screw head. You just need to make sure to select an appropriate size bit that fits the screw head to your liking.
@NewbieTuwbie2 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you just screw the first screw deeper to get the same results if not better? I honestly don't understand the purpose of the countersink.
@MrFatboyRuns2 жыл бұрын
Issue with doing that is you risk splitting the wood. I have used the method you described several times and got away with it, but there has been a few times when I bodged it. Much better to use the countersink to guarantee the results.

Countersink for neat work, and as previous commenter said so as not to damage the materials.

Should really justify that comment rather than just making it. If he's doing something incorrectly why not point it out and help?
