This song recounts a night where “Mr Jones” & Adam Duritz (the singer) were hanging out at a bar (New Amsterdam) where Mr Jones’ father was playing flamenco & that Spanish dancer Maria was performing with him. Adam & Mr Jones noticed that the drummer in Chris Isaak’s band was in another part of the room surrounded by women, & they began to fantasize about how cool it would be to break into the rock scene & be popular & surrounded by groupies…it’s basically a recounting of that night, of the dreams of hitting it big….very ironic that a song about making the big time actually became the Counting Crows big breakout hit.

So happy to hear you tap into the Crows. Such a great sound! Thank you! “Rain King” was my band’s opening song for years, and this song eventually had to to drop out because my aging voice couldn’t handle it anymore! 😆 Try “Rain King”, Mrs. Potter’s Lullaby, and ‘Round Here. Cheers!

Oh darn!! The music video compliments this song SO well!! In your spare time check it out ... it's REALLY good! I'm not in anyway taking away from the song though.... instrumentally and lyrically, it's a GREAT song.... the video just adds a little something special. Glad you liked it (although, with your musical awareness I wouldn't have expected anything less)🤗😉❤

Mr Jones is Adam Duritz friend, Marty Jones. Adam wrote the song about them being in a bar & thinking they could get some girls if they were big & famous.

To see the heart of this band, you need to react to 'Round Here'. But I STRONGLY suggest you do their *1994 live on Letterman version,* because that is what made them blow up. And it would allow you to see them perform, which they do incredibly well. :)

Blindsided again, Chod! Glad you enjoyed this one!! For an even great blindside reaction, including some organ music, look for (preferably a live performance)of Hi-De-Ho by Blood Sweat and Tears!!

As it’s already been said I will reiterate, this whole album is awesome and worth a listen to. Anna begins is my favourite, but for me this is one of those albums I don’t skip tracks on. Another one is crowded houses “reoccurring dream” album it’s a greatest hits but 18 tracks I do not skip.👍🏻

And I vote that he does the live version they played on Letterman in 1994, which made them blow up. That was probably the BEST performance anyone ever did on Letterman.

Van Morrison...........the lead singer's style of singing is like Van Morrison......even the stanza ...Sha-la-la-la.....is a thing Van Morrison did....and the style of music is between Van Morrison and The Guess Who. But the style of music was in the 90's was called "Grunge music" which are really throwbacks of the 60's and early 70's.

From the same debut album ,August and Everything after : Round Here, Omaha, Rain King for starters. Long December, Angles of The Silencees, Holiday in Spain.

Very, very heavy air play for this group in the 90's. This (August and Everything After) was their debut. Pretty much the whole album is worthy of your attention. Anna Begins and A Murder of One are my personal faves, neither was a single. Adam Duritz is a storyteller.

"Garage Jangle" genre. Grungelite. Maybe. They cut a new groove. Vocal styling uniqueness. Lyrical quirkiness, with possible depth. This album is a keeper. I wore a CD copy, out back then.
