The Slavic name of Germany is based on nemets/nimets' derived from nem-/nim- "mute/speech impaired" (Leonard Nimoy 's surname has the same root), i.e. Slavs historically saw Germans as the people whose words they couldn't understand.

Actually fun fact, why Slavs usually call Germany as "Niemcy" "Nemčija" and similar stuff is because the old Slavic tribes, when they came in contact with the German tribes, they couldn't communicate with eachother. So the word derives for the word "mute" which in Slavic Languages is "Nem". So basically, we Slavs call German "land of the mutes" because we weren't able to communicate with them

I find it extremely funny that Switzerland are being neutral even in their own official name.
@j.ackermann9110
@j.ackermann9110 6 жыл бұрын
It is not about neutrality. We just have a german speaking part, a french part and an italian part. And some rumantsch speaking people(Technically a part of germany, france and italy). And each part has its own name for the country. All of the names are official because it would be weird for others to call it one way and noone wants to call it switzerland. (Wait, you are right, it is some kind of neutrality...) And we can't really change the name because we would have a voting about it and nobody would vote for any other name than the one of their own language. To have 4 official names is just a compromise... And about the "official" name confederatio helvetica. He is kinda wrong because we have also 4 different translations for that one + the latin one, and all of them are official.

There are many more countries like this, for example Albania in Albanian is Shqiperia, Greece is Hellas, China is Zhongguo, Hungary is Magyarorszag, Armenia is Hayastan, Montenegro is Crna Gora and India is Bharat (even though there's a lot of different languages in India so they probably don't all call India the same). The word for Germany in Slavic languages doesn't actually come from a tribe name, it has a much different origin that I think is cool (I may be biased because I'm a Slav). So Slavs originally lived near the Germans (modern day Poland, Belarus and parts of Ukraine) and the Germans spoke a language that the Slavs could not understand. So they called them 'people who cannot speak' or 'mute people', and the word for 'mute' in the original common Slavic language was 'nem' (still is in many Slavic languages). In contrast, the Slavs called themselves 'people who can speak' and the word for 'letter' or possibly 'language' was 'slovo'. Add a few suffixes, and today in most of the Slavic languages Germans are Nemcy and Slavs are Sloveni (or something similar)

Also, in Romanian language, even if we call Germany as a country just one way("Germania"), we can call the the actual German people in 2 ways: one is "germani", which comes from the way we call the country, but the other is "nemti", which is related to how the Slavic languages call Germany(with the "t" pronounced similar as the Polish "c" in "Niemcy")
@kacperwoch4368
@kacperwoch4368 6 жыл бұрын
The Polish word ,,Niemcy'' means both Germans (the people) and Germany which supports this theory, as a country cannot be ,,mute'' but the people can. Btw don't you think that the Slavs call themselves in the coolest way possible? I mean the word ,,slovo'' is linked with: being able to speak, being famous and loud, being formidable and the glory itself?

have to correct you about switzerland tho. They used to call them self "Die Eidgenossenschaft" which roughly translates to "the ough cooperative". the first 3 cantons to swear that oath of brotherhood and unity where Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden. they quickly got the image of being utter savages amongst the german and austrian kingdoms, as they (especially habsburg) tried to conquer them. the habsburgs didn't want to call this group of region anything that has to do with god , so the simply denigrated the closest canton to them as "schweit" for switzerland or "Schweiter" for swiss. Sooner or later the swiss stood to it and where like "so what? we are schweiter!". the latin name is a dark ages thing, where everything had to be biblic. soo yeah, taken all the "schweiz" swizzera" "souisse" "switzerland" translations away, switzeland in fact has 3 names. 1. Die Eidgenossenschaft 2. Confeteratio Helvetica 3. Schweiz The last is the most recent and therefor the official one.

that annoyed me too. His view of the world is warped: what a country names itself is anything but weird: everything else is the strangeness. It is a separate internal question to ask, why in our country do we call ourselves and our country what we do. Eg America (… Eric?), Bharat, Myanmar, etc, and Deutschland… kommt ja von Deutsch, aber wies heißt die Sprache Deutsch… Lösung: _Deutsch_ = deut-isch; deut (ahd?) = Volk. Daher kommen die Wörter deuten/deutlich: etwas dem Volk verständlicher zu machen. Maybe there’s a similar explanation with Suomi (which is also derived from the name of the language: maybe Suomi derives from ‘folk’??).
@Ugly_German_Truths
@Ugly_German_Truths 7 жыл бұрын
+reelle Zahl " Lösung: Deutsch = deut-isch; deut (ahd?) = Volk." The original spelling was "thiodisk" (stemming of "thioda" the people, so it's a parallel to "völkisch" you can see how the ending looks similar, it also was latinized to "theodisce" probably conflating it with "dicere" = to speak) and morphed over several stages like tiutsch and teutsch to finally deutsch. It also has some connections to "teutonic", which refers to one of the migrating germanic tribes the romans had so much fun with, when they went into gaul to settle in a better climate (and got mostly killed for that wish). But yes it means the tongue of the people or Sprache des Volks... It was meant to separate the literally germanic (as in ancient german tribes) languages from the romanic dialects spoken in "France" when both were part of the Frankish kingdom/Empire under Charlemagne and his heirs... Originally what today is germany started out as Eastern Francia but in a few generations the new term had gotten the better over the old one and Francia was relegated to a minor regional description (encompassing what today is Hesse, at least the better part if not all of Thuringia and Nothern Bavaria, which has retained the name as Ober-, Mittel- and Unterfranken!) "We" spoke like those of the common folk, the "others" in the Frankish land spoke the language of the Romans and of the higher class/nobility, which created one of these "us vs them" situations and created a kind of communal feeling.

We call it pineapple because it looks like a pine cone, and we used to call pine cones "apple of the pine." The Spanish also use pina alongside ananas (pina colada, ring any bells?), so you're quite wrong--it has a bit to do with pines. We maintain we are correct about calling it a pineapple because we own the English language, not you. We'll call it whatever we like thanks. The same logic can be applied to country names--obviously the native English speaker is going to look at it from a perspective afforded to him by the English language, I'd have thought that was rather obvious!

Proto slavic. So that's why there are many variations of that word in the eastern europian countries for the germans. By the way I looked it up and it means speechless because the first slavic people couldn't understand the germans. The germans have a completely different language.

Very interesting that The Baltic languages (Into-European group) seem to have the name for their country come from a similar root to The Finnish Languages (Finland, Estonia) (Finno-Ugric group). As Suomi and Soome are likely related to Sami and Samoyed (meaning "The People"), I'm guessing that The Balts borrowed their analogous words from Finnish.

Regarding your first fact, it's not just Finland that call themselves Suomi. The Baltics all call Finland with the same root - in Estonian it's Soome, in Latvian - Somija and in Lithuanian it's Suomija. Also, other Lithuanian anomalies: Germany - Vokietija Poland - Lenkija Belarus - Gudija (though we also say Baltarusija, which means "white Russia") Georgia - Sakartvelo Montenegro - Juodkalnija (literally "the land of black mountains")

Alright, so: Deutschland, Duitsland, Däitschland, Tyskland: From an ethnonym of the Germanic people, þeudō. Incidentally, the English name for the Dutch people is also etymologically related. Déyìzhì, Déguó, Þýskaland, Doitsu, Dogil, Doichwillandeu, Düütschland, Teutōtitlan, Duiska, Tôitšhi, Đức, Dútslân, Daytschland, and Idaichulandu are also related. Germany, Germania, An Ghearmáin, An Ghearmáilt, Ġermanja, Gjermánia, Germanía, Germánija, Germaniya, and German: From the Roman name of Germania, the region beyond the Alps and the Danube where the Germanic tribes lived. Its etymology is unknown, but believed to be of Celtic origin, possibly meaning "noisy people" or "neighbours". Jeureuman, Jerman, Jarmani, Germanujo, Germanio, Gjermanie, Jarmanī, Jamus, Germánya, Kelemania, Jarmani, Yīa La Man, Yn Ghermaan, Tiamana, Jāmne, Djermani, Siamani, Jarmaniya, Ujerumani, Heremani, and Yəə-Rá-Má-Nii are also related. Allemagne, Alemanha, Alemania, Alemanya, Alemana, Yr Almaen, Almanya, Elmaniya, Almaniya: From the Franks (originally a Germanic tribe themselves, until they adopted Vulgar Latin in the Middle Ages and eventually became the French), who referred to their eastern neighbours in general by the name of the tribe Alemanni. The Arabs learnt the name of Alemannia from their interaction with the Franks during the Crusades, and they further taught that name to the Turks. ʾAlmānyā, Alemaña, Alamagn, Almayn, Alemaña, Almanïya, ʾAalləɨmɑng, Almagna, Aanimaa, 'Ālmān, Alimanya, and Olmon are also related. Niemcy, Miemiecko, Njyméccyna, Niméccyna, Nemecko, Németország, Nemcija, Njemacka, Nemacka: From the Slavic word němьci, which literally means "mute" and figuratively "foreigner". That is, the Slavs called the Germans "němьci" to mean that the two peoples could not understand each others' speech. In contrast, the word "Slav" itself means "speakers". Curiously, the Arabic and Ottoman Turkish names for Austria (Nímsā and Nemçe) come from the same root, likely due to the Turks associating the Slavic name for the Germans with the Habsburg Realm. Nemsko, Njemačka, Ńymcy, Nimska, and Němska are also related. Saksa, Saksamaa: From the Saxons, whom the Finnic peoples had most contact with of all the Germanic tribes early on. Curiously, it's also the name that several Celtic languages have for the English people due to the English people also being descended from the Saxons. Saksāmō, Ssassitko temm, Saksanma, and S'aksamaa are also related. Vacija, Vokietija: A complete mystery. Motherfucking Balts.

The term "British" comes from an extinct Celtic language of the same name. It's arguable that English isn't a British language, as it's Germanic. I think your comment, EMB 2017, refers to political history, rather than linguistic history. In linguistic history, languages don't belong to countries, and they only sometimes belong to peoples. If you look at the language map of Europe, it's very different from the political map.
@aragornthebrave

In a sense, no. But in that same sense, there's no Irish language. *The* British language was Celtic, and is extinct, and *the* Irish language is living and Celtic. It's just semantics really. Ibx2cat was very incorrect to call them all 'English' languages, but less incorrect to call them British, as most of them are found in Britain. He should have said 'the languages of Britain and Ireland', *or* 'Celtic languages', depending on what exactly he meant.

Der Retro which is exactly why most of western Europe thinks "it' basically Russia" It's not. Bit of history here that is actually best understood in Polish... So; todays Russia stems from the dutchy of Moscow. Thus in Poland they were for a long time known as Moscovites. At the same time there existed Ruthinia (in Polish 'Ruś') This was divided into White (Biała), Red (Czerwona) and Black (Czarna) In slavic languages White Ruthinia would be very very close to Biała Ruś which later transformed to Białoruś (in Polish) or Bielarus. Black and Red Ruthinia merged to form Ukraine which is not surprising since those were more geographical terms than national. All Ruthinia in the beginning formd a single nation from which White Ruthinia split relativly late (and not politicaly but culturaly - at the time were talking about all or most of Ruthinia was part of Lithuania which itself was part of Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth). Ever since Moscovites started to make foares (military) into Ruthinia they started to call themselves Russians. In Polish however there remaind and remains to this day a distinction Rosja for Russia Ruś for Ruthinia Rosjanie for Russians Rusini for Ruthinians (modern day Ukrainians and Belarusians) - that term of course is not commonly used anymore since it makes little sense in todays world. It mearly exists.

Why do you get angry with me? This was not an attack or nothin' I just pointed out that the naming convention in some places can lead to unwarranted conclusions. That's it.

In my country (Croatia) we call Poland "Poljska", with the same "field" root - literally meaning and roughly translated into english "Country of the filelds". Also "Poljaci" as nation ("People of the fields")

Russia and Belarus aren't called because Russia has diverse population or some such bullshit. Parts of today's Ukraine and Belarus, those parts used to be Kievan Rus' kingdom or whatever and in the middle ages they used colours to indicate cardinal directions. For example north would be marked white, south would be red, not sure about east and west. So Belarus is the northern part of the Rus' kingdom or whatever it was. I'm not an expert, I'm just trying to deduce.

Rus and Russia has the same connection as Roman empire and Romania. Russia is just an assimilated colony. Belarusians find word "Byelorussia" offensive, so use it properly.

There was no "ethnicy" that immigrated from Sweden. this is an occult pseudo historical LIE. It was rather everything vice versa. In sweden lived old Slavs who were called Russians or better said Vendels or "Venedi"; SloVENi or sloVENETI; Slavs, where Ts or C transmuted into "D" or "T" in "centum" languages... That's why Sweden until today preserved many slavic words. Ever heard of the car "Škoda"? Škoda means "damage, harm" in slavic, which is the same word as in Swedish; Skada. There are tons of similar other words about which swedish linguist keep their mouth shut.

Rus is Ruthenia which is not Russia. Modern Russia is an outgrowth of Muscovites. Ruthenia(Rus) is different concept.

Filozoficzne Robaki i don't care about the "source" of this company, but I wanted to say something completelly different. My point was that the so called "viking theory" of Russians is wrong. This includes also the fact that there was not found one single Viking grave on the Russian, Belarussian soil... The so called "vikings" of Russia were simply Vagrians or Varangians, who were by the historian Adam von Bremen known as the nation of Vagri, who lived in current Poland and Germany. Their capital city was called Stargard or Stari Grad (Gard, like "swedish" Asgard, was the old name for Grad or "City", "garden" (Ograd; from that word the later occult word derived; "Agartha")... Swedish people even called Russian, Ukrainian lands as Gardarike, which means "Many gards" or "Gradi" (cities). With the unification of Ilmen Slovenes (who originally built Slovensk (which was the name for Novgorod or "New Grad" or "New city") and Vagrians, they moved their capital city of Stargard to Slovensk or Novgorod.

EnhancedNightmare Rus is Rusiya, not "Ruthenia". Ruth means Red and Rus means Rusasto or Red in Slavic. "Ruthenia" is an occult latino transliteration of the same form of a word. Rusalka for example was not some "Ruthalka" but was Rusalka, which derives from a Rus.

The only KZbin channel I don't watch at 1.5x. Everybody else is in slow motion, as is real life. I talk almost as fast as him which is why I piss so many people off.

The crazy thing is that "Japan" is etymologically from the same words that "Nihon" is from. They're Chinese roots that were borrowed and combined in Japan and evolved one way there, and were then brought back to China and the name evolved separately there and then got borrowed through a whole long list of languages before getting to English.
