Opeth are brilliant. Even non-metal musicians appreciate their compositional complexity. They often go from blistering passages of growling intensity to melancholy acoustic parts seamlessly without ever feeling unnatural. Their songs are expansive enough to include a range that gives them an epic feel. They are all excellent musicians.

Thanks for doing this, one of my top 5 bands at this late-50s stage of life! This is a fantastic performance, in an awesome venue, of one of their older songs. On at least the last two albums they have moved away from the 'harsh' vocals and only use clean, with more of a 'progressive' sound rather than the 'death metal' type of sound. Hope you check out more of their stuff as they are brilliant musicians and vary their sound quite a lot! For something off one of the more recent albums, check out Faith In Others, or maybe Windowpane. From the album is fine, but they are always awesome Live! Cheers!

Opeth were a revelation to me when I found them ca. 2000. They were the first band with "growl" vocals that I got into, and even though I hated the vocals at first, the music was so powerful, so hypnotic, that I kept listening and eventually the growls grew on me and opened up a whole new world of metal music. They're still in my top 5 bands of all-time, only behind Iron Maiden, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and King Crimson. It's also cool that you started with perhaps my favorite song from my favorite Opeth album: Ghost Reveries was, IMO, their last top-to-bottom masterpiece and their finest, for me just ahead of Blackwater Park and Still Life. To me, Opeth were one of the last "true" progressive bands in that they took a genre (in their case death metal) and went completely new places with it, and they've had a profound impact on the last 20+ years of metal because of that. You might be interested to know that their recent albums have abandoned the growl vocals and adopted what I call a "retro prog" style heavily influenced by the classic 70s prog bands (though not the more popular ones).

Mikael Åkerfeldt has joked about how he just doesn't know how to write short songs. 6 minutes is usually the shortest song you'll find in an Opeth album, to put things in perspective. Personally, I love it, because it gives the music time to settle into the different sections, time to build and transition, and time to really tell a story. What's always stood out to me about his songwriting though is how he uses contrast. We hear huge loud sections, contrasted by quiet, contemplative ones. We hear both distorted guitar and acoustic sections. We hear fast paced riffs, but also long drawn out synth pads. And Mikael's solos are often slower paced and quite expressive and soulful compared to what you expect for death metal. I'm also a huge fan of their use of organ in the background of so much of their music. It adds to the texture while staying out of the way of the rest of the band at the same time.

My guess would be that so many people are jumping on the PRS train is because they keep incredibly high standards for their instruments , even the cheaper SE models are held to a high quality of standards . Where as makers like Gibson and Fender are riding the coattails of their names churning out subpar products , unless you spend the big bucks and get a custom shop from either is the only time you will get finely crafted product .

I appreciate that you're not afraid to step out of your comfort zone with music. It's supremely important, as an artist of any style, to be able to intake and appreciate a multitude of playing styles. Having a big rolodex of influences to pull from when composing can really open up a lot of avenues you'd otherwise overlook or not even fathom.

PRS is one of the most versatile guitars out there without breaking the bank. They play really well and you can get a really tight sound with heavy distortion. Metal players usually gravitate toward Kiesel, Ibanez, Jackson, Music Man and PRS much more than Gibson or Kramer these days.

If you do another Opeth track, do Deliverance (studio version) For the PRS guitar usage, Mikael has used one for decades now and even has his own signature model. Even if you dont do another react to it, try one of their albums on your own time. Their newest 4 albums are prog rock/jazz, and everything before that is progressive metal. Avoid their first 2 albums to start out

Also, this is called death metal, or maybe in the case of Opeth progressive death metal, and yes it is a long song, but most of their songs are quite long.

PRS has been steadily growing in the metal community BECAUSE of bands from Europe like Opeth, artists like Steven Wilson ( Porcupine Tree) ,and so on, as they don't necessarily have a connection to Fender/Gibson etc. Like US artists do. There are a lot of nice bands making boutique quality instruments in Europe. Another metal favorite is Mayones ,as well as Framus/Warwick ....

I was taught to appreciate how good bands like this are musically years ago by a friend of mine. They are very good! Seriously talented.... But, this brings me to a sore point: bands like this with a supposedly "niche" market have a bigger audience than Rush...which are the most incredible trio of musicians, lyricist, arrangers, players and - with a very distinctive but amazing "Marmite" voice - singer of all time! Why? I know the music industry is effed-up, but really THAT effed-up? Makes me weep! ALL power to real and GREAT music! For a change....💪💪

I love both Opeth and Rush (Opeth is in my top 5; Rush in my top 30), but there's no way Opeth are bigger/more popular than Rush. Rush built up a massive popular audience over the years, and I'm sure they've outsold Opeth many times over. If Opeth may seem more popular right now it's only because Rush aren't around anymore and Opeth are newer. Plus, Opeth's influence has been huge on the last 20 years of music while Rush's influence goes much further back, so a lot of the new bands kids are getting into now were directly influenced by Opeth.
