Opeth songs to check out next in no particular order: "Bleak" (features vocals by Steven Wilson), "Cusp Of Eternity" (that hook!), "Face of Melinda" (great journey), "Harvest" (the melancholy, no growls), and last but not least "Deliverance" (for the DUN dun dun DUN). And if you want similar (as in complexity, not necessarily as death metal) other bands to have a look at are: Porcupine Tree / Steven Wilson, Karnivool, Haken, and King Crimson are the first ones to come to mind.

I'm so glad you noticed the bass in this. I started working on learning it a few months ago and to this day it's still a trip. It's on a whole other level. Also I was convinced that outro was completely structureless and honestly hated it for a bit. After figuring it out it's become one of my favorites. Love you and your reaction channel. If you love Opeth you have to do two songs together from the album “Watershed”. Coil and Heir Apparent. Coil represents for me A relationship that is toxic and the man ultimately leaves the woman behind but has much pain over doing such but had to do so due to the nature of the relationship ( extremely toxic) and the woman additionally expresses how she feels being left behind and the more remorse that they both feel as the years go by in having to have left each other, Heir Apparent expresses the anger and rage felt as a result of what felt like demonic possession of two people in this horrific toxic relationship and the ups and downs of it. For me the two songs together are as a Shakespearean tragedy, something that I and many people have gone through. I must reiterate that this is what this song meant to me, it may mean something else to others however it is a very emotionally powerful music listening for me from this perspective

You cannot go wrong with anything from the albums Blackwater Park (best album), Still Life, Ghost Reveries, Watershed, Deliverance, or My Arms Your Hearse. Below are some great songs to start: Drapery Falls Dirge for November Blackwater Park (no clean vocals) Deliverance Bleak (Steven Wilson back vocals) The Moor The Lotus Eater A Fair Judgment (no growls) Many more, but this will get you started (and hooked). Again, do some studio versions, because they are perfect. Mikael's growls were declining during those live performances, and after Watershed album they no longer do growls on any songs. I honestly don't get the Steven Wilson hype. I was a pretty big Opeth fan for a while I played my copy of My Arms Your Hearse so much back in the day I wore the cd out (it started to warp and skip) and had to buy a second copy. The album before that one Morningrise however is my favourite I absolutely love the sound on that album. I was lucky enough to get to see Opeth play live 3 times (the last time was in 2007ish). But I kind of fell off on Opeth and lost interest after Blackwater Park came out. I still bought their cd's hoping to recapture that old magic but never really happened. I remember buying Ghost Reveries the day it came out, it was the last Opeth album I did this for nowadays I still check their stuff out every so often but just doesn't really do it for me anymore, maybe it was just a time and place thing back in the late 90's. I don't know how much influence Steven Wilson had on their sound but I'm pretty sure he had at least some impact similar thing happened to Anathema I was a big fan of their late 90's early 2000's sound (Judgement, Fine Day to exit, Natural Disaster) after Steven Wilson came along it just wasn't the same.

@@1norwood1 I'm a huge fan of both. I bought Opeth from Still Life to Sorceres. Porcupine Tree every single album. His solo albums too . Understandably, fans of early Opeth probably won't be pleased with their more prog / rock direction. I have the opposite with increasing age. It's probably logical. I grew up on Pink Floyd, Yes, Genesis but also on Metallica Nirvana, Alice in Chains, RHCP Tool etc ...
@1norwood12 жыл бұрын
@@Fitchie69 I'm not sure what it is I don't mind prog rock I also like Genesis and Pink Floyd, stuff like Uriah Heep and I guess more modern stuff like I'm a big Mars Volta fan if that counts as prog, so I'm not opposed to prog per-se there is just something about Opeth newer sound I can't get into it's difficult for me to articulate but I just don't get the same feeling from their newer stuff that I did listen to all of those old records.

Opeth In their prime really have had some wonderful root note type groovy and bouncy bass lines that differ but compliment the main riffs so well, making it sound warm and comforting. Some prime examples on their album Damnation which a lot of non metal heads gravitate towards because it's their only fully mellow album. A good way to trick people into liking a band which can be quite heavy lol. When I was 17 i discovered opeth after hearing about porcupine tree. First by damnation, then was totally shocked to hear Ghost of perdition. Damnation really is something magical and surprising considering most of their discography. cheers.

I love seeing you headbang at the sick riffs and your reaction whenever there is a change or drop. It shows that you "get it". Do you listen to the studio version after this though? I imagine it's a little overwhelming after your first listen, especially because this song's ending is meant to throw you off. There's just so much detail in the entire song, as you pointed out. I'm sure it's hard to remember some stuff right after it ends. I think your next song should definitely be a studio version. You'll get to hear how Mikael sounds somewhat different when he growls and screams on the albums. I personally don't think it's better than his style today, though I do think in this particular concert he was reaching the end of the set and was having some trouble with his in-ear monitors, So even this performance might not be him at his best. And it's still so good. For your next song though...it's so hard to choose...I'm going to go with my gut and say Bleak. Bleak is a fucking good song.

Everyone appears to be giving recommendations of their newer material, but you really cannot go wrong with some of the older albums, with tracks such as Deliverance, Blackwater Park, The Leper Affinity, and When . And, as others have mentioned, you should really check out Porcupine tree, who were instrumental to their sound. My top recommendation, which I consider to be their magnum opus, is Anesthetize off the Fear of a Blank Planet. An excellent live recording: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZjamKd7h6iJf5Y The power of both bands is to defy expectations, and make you feel emotions you totally didn't expect.
