Fun Fact: the reason US spelling has less u's is because in colonial days, newspapers were taxed by the letter, so they dropped letters that weren't as needed to understand it.

That's a myth. -or is directly from Latin, but -our is the same suffix from Latin via French. So Latin loans had -or (e.g. color) but French loans had -our (e.g. honour). However, this was very confusing and inconsistent, and in the end, it boiled down either using only -or or only -our. Webster, in his 1828 American dictionary, preferred the Latin -or as it was more original. But Johnson, in his 1755 British dictionary, preferred the French -our as French had a closer relationship to English. So -or won in the US, but -our won in Britain. But British is a tad more inconsistent as they have since adopted a lot of -or spellings (e.g. governor, mirror, superior, compare with Johnson's governour, mirrour, superiour).
@theplutonimus4 жыл бұрын
@@TurtleMarcus I'm pretty sure this was another correction made by the man who made -ise into -ize. I dunno about this but the americans wanted the English spelling to be correct at least a bit. Anyway I didn't know about the -or and -our suffixes so thanks for giving info! Have a nice day!

6:58 according to google, ca is "here" and "nada" is nothing in Portuguese, but another google search shows that a French explorer, Jacques Cartier, was shown the route to "kanata" by two native youths, likely Huron-Iroquois, in 1535. The directions led to the village of Stadaconda, where the present-day city of Quebec sits. Lacking any other name for the region given by the natives, Jacques referred to the village and surrounding region as "Canada." This is actually a bit funnier to me than the Portuguese joke: the two kids basically told Jacques "town's this way, c'mon, we'll show you" and he named an entire country "town"
