James Hemings is acknowledged for the introduction of culinary delights such as macaroni and cheese, crème brûlée, meringue, whipped cream, and French fries to America. Remarkably, he holds the distinction of being the first American to undergo professional cooking instruction in France. Despite these considerable feats, he accomplished this while enslaved, as the personal chef to Thomas Jefferson.

Wow! Sally Hemmings we "know" around the grapevine, but James Hemmings we love. Why? There's not ONE person who in America who hasn't enjoyed french fries, mac n' cheese and vanilla ice cream. Vanilla freaking ice cream! While watching this, unaware, I was enjoying a cup of vanilla ice cream, so when I became aware that HE was the one who brought it to ME to enjoy half through finishing, I was like, "wait. What?!", hundreds of years later, God Bless him and all his marvelous cullinary creations. Most cullinary artist hope to have ONE dish they're known for creating in their lifetime. This man had THREE that will ALWAYS and forever stand the test of time. And all of them, unlike most complicated creations, are so easy to create. Ice cream, not so much at the time. No wonder Jefferson had a hard time letting him go and bartered with him to teach someone else how to do what he could do. It's for this reason James should have all the accolades and recognition. There's no achievement in being Jefferrsons mistress. But that talent and skill...this was great. That's all I gotta' say.
