In this 3 part video series, learn how to easily build a deer and bear proof garden fence and enclosure, complete with raised garden beds.
Our design requires no post pounding, or digging holes and using cement!
You can build this garden enclosure on any type of ground no matter how hard it is. It is a full 7 1/2' high to prevent deer from jumping over into your garden, and it is strong enough to withstand a bear trying to climb over - it will also keep out small animals.

I love this system! I live in an urban neighborhood with deer who ate my small orchard of apple saplings over the winter. This seems like a great solution to scale and add to a backyard lot to serve the purposes of fencing and growing while being visually pleasant to neighbors. Thank you!

Hi Matt, it is a good system especially if your ground is rock hard and hard to install posts. Success with your hobby farm - it;s the way to go these days... backyard gardens are going to make a come back I think!

Looks great! One point, though -- when you're installing the bottom bed supports (around 9:45), with the exception of the end grain, there will be no stain on the mating surfaces. Won't this permit rot? Same concern with the center brace and the 2x2s on the corners.

For us it was a matter of time (and filming) and if you have time - for sure, stain any areas that will be covered during assembly. I should have mentioned this in the video.

We have moles here in Texas (lots of them). Would a smaller mesh of chicken wire work as well?

I can't see why not. As long as the mesh is smaller than the narrowest part of a rodents body (mole in your case) it should keep them out. Just choose a size that you feel is small enough.

I use 1/4" hardware cloth for the bottoms of my raised beds. I have lots of voles which are smaller and can be destructive. Now, if I can just figure out a way to keep the groundhog from digging in at a deep level, coming up in the pathways, and climbing into the boxes!

what type of stain did you use?

Hi Bad... it has been a while, but we just used a basic outdoor stain. For this project we used basic lumber and protected it with stain. But, it is kind of like this - the better the lumber e.g. Cedar the less concern over the stain or preservative. Use the best you can based on the lumber of choice and it's natural resistance to rot.

They could, but have not yet done so - and we have lots of bear. And you could add electrical fence wire along the top to deter them if they try.
