Dunno about voting for independants. A lot of them have jumped into bed with the gov main party in the past. I think I’m voting for a party this time but not sf,ff,fg,labour or social dems. Maybe the Irish freedom party or aontu.

We did have a date. The election is allowed to be called early if the current governmenet chooses to which is what they did. I believe the actual end of their term was early next year. The US are also allowed to do this however they never do hence why it seems they have a more consistent date. All European democracies however generally have an rough time as opposed to a specific date due to the governements choosing when they'd like to hold the election. That said it doesn't really give any one party an advantage as canvassing etc. is in reality well underway before elections are called they just do it on the down low as opposed to posters everywhere.

independents did well the last election but you do need to latch on to a party to gain the numbers to form a government. I'd say Sinn Fein and independents would realistically be the best for the country right now.

Is it any wonder the country is in the state it is in? There isn't one strong conservative party in Ireland. Therefore, doesn't this just mean that Ireland is getting what it has always voted for? If the country doesn't take the chance on a nationalist party, it is safe to say that Fianna Fail and Fine Gael will return to power once again. What other options are there? The Greens? Sinn Fein? Labour? etc... etc... All left-wing, ultra-liberal parties.
