Story 1: Those people deserved to be homeless in NYC, not spend time in an AirBNB. While I totally understand the need for a deal or to save money on things like this, but if you want to pay less, you have to expect less. They were just clearly trying to screw over the OP here. Im honestly surprised the OP didn't warn other contractors about the antics here, but it looks like he didnt really need to, since the contractors they went with ended up not being very good it sounds like. Good on the OP for not taking the job here. Story 2: Honestly, if i were the OP, i would tell both the dad and the sister (especially the sister) to rack off. There is absolutely no reason the OP should be treated like this. They are both just taking advantage of the OP here and its wrong. I get wanting to take care of a sick parent, but not if this is the way you are going to be treated. Story 3: OP is 100% not a jerk here, and i can't see why anyone would think that. The son and DIL both said she could come over anytime, especially in those kinds of circumstances... and then they treat the OP like this when she actually does? And kicks her out in the rain? Gee....thanks! Jerks! If i were the OP, id be limiting contact here without one really good apology. Story 4: The friend here is a complete dullard. If something was set in stone here and paid for, then i can see it being an inconvienience for the friend here, but since nothing was, then the friend was just being an idiot... and i dont know what ''intelligence' the friend was talking about, since she doesnt have any to insult.

chick in that second story needs to see about putting her dad in a home. I know that's normally an awful thing for a child to do, but there's no good excuse for him treating you that way. If he doesn't like it, too bad. If your sister doesn't like it she can move in with him, and you can take her apartment. either way that nightmare will be over with.

For Story 2 My dad was doing something similar with my cousin living with his mom and paying him to take care of her and her cat and all he did was play video games instead of taking care of my grandma and her cat. My Grandma was a sweet lady but she and my late grandfather spoiled my dad’s sister when she and my dad’s 2 brothers were growing up. My Grandmother has since died. My Dad eventually moved my grandmother into an Assisted Living home so she could be properly taken care of. My dad changed the Locks and kicked my cousin out and my cousin broke into the house and stole some of my late grandmother’s possessions to buy drugs. He’s now in jail. Am I actually a jerk being happy about my cousin being in jail?

Story 2: Does anyone else get the vibe that OP is leaving stuff out? I can't put my finger on it, but something seems really off about the story. Story 1: I would have dropped those greedy entitled clients IMMEDIATELY after seeing the price change that they had made. What scumbags! It would serve them right if they hired a crooked contractor…which it sounds like they did. Story 2: That dad and the sister suck. OP needs to break ties with them and don’t do another thing for them. Move out when possible. The more OP does for that stupid ungrateful old man, the worse he will treat OP. I wouldn’t be surprised if he and the sister don’t plot against OP to disinherit her. I’ve seen this happen. Story 3: NTA. Horrible! Abusive! The son is a jerk. What an empty care package to say “You are welcome any time” and then kick them out in a storm just because the OP and OP’s disabled grandson came in during “mommy’s alone time”, never mind there is an emergency storm and power outages. Sounds like the wife has the son’s ⚾️⚾️ in her purse. Story 4: “I came here to see ‘MEXICO’, not to see Hank Hill squeeze ‘last year’s butt’ into ‘this year’s swimsuit’!” This is about the friend getting her ego and purse hit, not about OP backing out. Nothing was in writing, no money down, and OP didn’t have the money. A similar situation happened with me and a former friend of mine when I told her I couldn’t make it, despite telling her before “I can’t make any promises.”
