It was a double red flag so no one should have been in the water. It’s been double red flag for a week. Hotels need to inform guests what that means so this tragedy doesn’t happen again. Prays for the family and their 6 kids.

"Let it take you out to sea" I've heard everything but this.. because if you get pulled too far out, you may not have enough energy to get back to shore and that's key.. keeping your head up and keeping your energy at all cost. Know the signs of rip current to begin with, what to look for in the movement of the water.. sometimes this wont even work but it helps. Another thing is by a float that comes with a strap so it's attached to you. Read the safety instructions too. You can also put a whistle made for water rescue in your pocket if you have one, make sure its secure. Safety in numbers. If you have any children, even if it looks absurd, make sure they have something on their body like a lifejacket/pfd. The beach is a pretty safe place but you're also touching mother nature. It's the same as going out to the wilderness, you dont know what you're going to run into. A bit of caution and education goes a long way. You can also go to beaches where lifeguards are stationed. They'll not only see rip currents but make sure you dont go in. Look for beach flags too, they're symbols of current, sharks, storms, etc.

If this happens to u, don’t fight the rip current (u can’t win)! Instead, look at shore, swim parallel to shore and it will release you! I almost died in one. Thank God I knew to swim parallel to the shore. I swam about 40’ then, like in an instant, it was back to normal swimming…to the shore.

Send your thoughts and prayers and also don't make the same mistake. Every year man. The ocean is dangerous if you do not reapect her. Sideways. SWIM SIDEWAYS. You pick a fight with the ocean and you will always lose. You got to treat her with the same respect as you would any woman who could wake up in the middle of the night and murder you or cut pieces off- bc she can and will if you play stupid games. Swin sideways!!!!!!!! Better yet if you are not already very aware of this stay out of the ocean as you might die. Just sad man. So unnecessary.

Tragic story, but there is so much information out there, no reason to drown in a rip. People don't realize how big, powerful and dangerous the ocean can be, they just jump in, even if they can't swim. Interesting that we don't get a lot of stories about dangerous rip drownings in the Pacific Islands communities, they're teaching their kids about the ocean from the day they're born.

How did they drown?? Could they not swim?? Rips will pull you out a little ways, but don’t pull you under. Literally just floating on your back until it’s calm is all you need to do. And most of the time, once you reach the end of the rip going out…the current & waves will push you back towards the shore. I don’t see how people just panic and drown themselves. I know it sounds insensitive, but how does survival instincts not kick in?? I guess people react differently, but I’ve been pulled out before and my instinct was to float on my back when I couldn’t swim out of the current.

Knew to stay calm. Too deep to swim tred up alert. Held breath 30 secs. knew I'd have to breath would drown. Grace of God tide flowed toward shore threw me out. Trauma. Dive swim always in direct view of lifeguard. May God rest their souls. Prayers for this family.
