Yes, this is a masterpiece. Progressive Rock borrows from classical music in having different movements in one. At 16:33 Rush are shown when they were younger (when they produced 2112) This song is a finger to their record label as the label was not happy with the direction Rush was going. They wanted shorter radio friendly songs. This was Rush's answer, a 20 minute suite. If this was the end of their musical career they were going to out their way. The album was a huge success and the record label never bothered them again. Rush took control. Cheers

They played the whole thing live on a couple of different tours. I believe the last tour they played the entire song was in 1997. It IS on KZbin :)

This was the album Rush made when the label was threatening to drop them unless they came out with some radio friendly singles. Rush was determined to create music they wanted to despite popularity and good press. If that isn’t a rock and roll attitude then I don’t know what is !

🙏🏿 Bless you for going in 100% because of your faith in Rush as a band! 🤔 It always surprises me how young folks think a 20 minute song is long. 🤗 This, Doors, Who, PF were the music 2 generations grew up 😁 doing their homework to. 🤔 It also kind of makes me sad, because things like St Peppers Lonely Club Band, Tommy, Yellow Submarine, The 2 Cygnus X-1 Books (The Voyage & Hemispheres) all would be Albums, like 2112, that would be considered "too long" to listen to by today's standards. 1 or 2 songs would be listened to today and 😂 I can't image how a song like 'A Day in The Life' off a Concept Album would be construed out of context by today's standards. 😏 Why when the record company told Rush to come up with "radio friendly" songs, this was their Answer. 🤷🏿♀️ These type of Albums & Concepts is why Rush, was Rush, in the first place. 😋 Thanks for letting me get that off my chest! 😘 You guys rock! 🥰🐰

They played this live on the album "All The World's A Stage" .. they occasionally played side 1 of the 2112 album, in its entirety, live on a few tours, but not often.

See them play it live in '97. The only tour they played the entire song live. "RUSH - 2112 - All 7 Parts Live & Remastered In HD (Toronto 1997 - 60fps)"

You get an extra bit of Neil here as he does the ominous voice of authority/doom at the end. He also did the voiceovers in The Necromancer and Subdivisions.

Here's the basic story behind 2112. Their record label Mercury wanted them to do radio friendly songs. This was a protest. They said we're not doing this for you. We're doing it for us. So they made the first half of the record all one song (kinda) and gave them the finger and created this MASTERPIECE This is the story of that battle. Neil Peart, after he joined the band, wrote all of the lyrics to Rush music. We lost our GOAT. He's playing for GOD now. 😇That was the last time I cried (Sorry Christine. When Stevie goes, I'm going to lose it) I'm jealous because you have the cool earphones like I had with my old turntable in the day. Now all I have is my little computer speaker. This version has the cool graphics telling the story, in the 1970s we were hit with both barrels(3?) with this, and only our imagination. " Listen to my music". "Hear what it can do". "Tere's something here as strong as life". "I know it will reach you." Thank you so much for making this GOAT enjoyable again. Happy belated 4/20.

Alex and Geddy recently did a discussion tour promoting Geddy's book. They sit in front of an audience and just chat about Rush and anecdotes from the book. They told the story about how when Neil was brand new to the band he came up to them and handed them the lyrics to Beneath Between and Behind and said "hope you like it" and left. They looked at each other and said "I guess we dont have to worry about that part anymore" and laughed.

Great reaction!! I'm sorry to say, but this whole song is fantastic live!! There is a complete version of it from Rush's 1997 Test For Echo tour - from their home in Toronto (I was at this show) - it was the only time they did the complete song - and it was INCREDIBLE!! The extra words (outside of the lyrics) are extra description of the story, and was included in the liner notes for the album. I recommend watching again and pausing to read these. Yes, this is a masterpiece!! Mit freundlichen Grüßen von Canada!! Cheers!

FYI, he was NOT "exterminated" by RUSH .. The "elders" (aka; RUSH) came down and destroyed the temples of Syrinx and thus save the main character and the people FROM the priests. They did not destroy the main character in this story, they liberated him and the people.

This was one side of the album, it is like a play or opera each part is a different part of the story. Some is just music some is lyrics and music. Where he goes into 2 different singing value is supposed to be 2 people arguing. It was very progressive when it came out. I was 12 when it came out and listen to it with my brother in-law in the car by cassette tape lol.

After their previous album, Caress Of Steel, sold poorly, their record company ordered them to produce more radio-friendly songs....THIS was their response - a giant sized *F - U.* Twenty-one Twelve got them the freedom to write whatever they wanted, and as they say - the rest is HISTORY....

You got the story wrong. The Elder race came back and reclaimed the planet(s) where they belong. As far as the main character, some say he commits suicide. I just think he reached the depths of despair but his dream ultimately came true and he witnessed it.
