I've been noticing this. All these older folks, just have more gumption and are less scared. I've been in a situation where an arsonist starting fires around my property and I had to put them out myself. The biggest one almost reached my home and i did what I could but had to stop because the flames were insanely hot, I was fortunate that the Fire Department did arrive in time. So I understand these people. It is so dangerous though. I live in LA btw. this happened to me two summers ago.

I’m in northeast Alabama and my grandfather planted two oaks in his backyard (1940s) which are now very large; I live in their house and they shade it from our hot summer sun. I was worried about them during our three month drought in 2016, but my brother told me they are “water hogs” they’ll survive when nothing else does; which might explain how their roots (which are huge) probably helped irrigate the land area around that couple’s house. Ingenious idea! I learned something new today- now I know why oaks are called Mighty Oaks because they are!

This. It wasn't just the hoses. They learned and prepared from the last one. People that had hoses and pumps to pull water from their pools saved their homes too. All the tools. It wasn't luck. They were prepared. They had hoses on both sides. Although it was a massive blessing they had water pressure. But if they had a pool and a pump that could work it you don't! Clothes to protect from burns, and masks to filter smoke would be wise additions also. But these people show us what being prepared can do. Still sometimes nature bulldozes all the preparation and does what it does. But the fact some were able to get through it with various preparation teaches a lot.

Some people just have stronger survival instincts and they are quick thinking. One of the things I never understood when I was in school in LA is how many people see their house backing up to fields of dry, flammable vegetation, and don’t think to proactively soak that area. Yes, the water bill will be high, but vastly cheaper than any out-of-pocket costs from rebuilding that home.
