My dad taught me 20 or so years ago when I was a little girl that if there was ever a fire coming from the hills behind us, spray down the house and surrounding shrubbery. Seeing how this method saved houses in these fires unlocked that stored memory . My dad died 9 years ago but his lessons remain ❤

Theres literally 10+ stories like this already coming out.. and so it begs the question. If an untrained civilian can save their house and other peoples homes with garden hoses. Why were the fire fighters? It seems pretty clear that many more homes could have been saved... I've also seen many videos of the fire sort of slowly, casually burning through neighborhoods and no fire trucks anywhere in sight?

To protect his house now, he decided to install a sprinkler system on the facade of his house as well as making his yard free of potential combustibles. This should be among the standard of every community located in potential wildfire zones.

Growing up in Florida and being very aware of the dangers of trees and brush being directly against our houses I can’t imagine how the state of California has not put these practices into place with all of the fire issues they have. It’s incredible seeing all these homes with branches and shrubs, touching them. That’s part of the reason why the insurance companies have dropped people. The wildfires are unavoidable because California is a desert however, there is a tremendous amount of negligence on the part of the local and state leaders, as well as the residents who refused to accept that they need to maintain the trees and shrubs around their home. We are each individually responsible for ourselves and our property. Our local and state leaders are responsible for our infrastructure so that we can maintain our properties. This is a travesty. Imagine what the media would have done to Ron DeSantis if this is how he had handled hurricanes Helene and Milton.

Because if you clear too much it increases the likelihood of landslides/mudslides. California terrain is very different from Florida terrain.

I don't think people should have risked their lives for their homes. BUT... the more of these videos I see? If all the homeowners had tried to put these fires out around their homes and not trusted the fire department to do it? It might have saved a lot of homes. Back in the day--there were no fire departments. You only had yourself, your family, and your neighbors to help stop a fire. It's a revelation after the fact.
