I believe mag-rot is a chemical reaction between the metal and water(long term). For the inside, I imagine ethanol fuels with their high water content are one of the biggest contributing factors. Also, extreme cold to hot ambient temps will contribute to condensation(water). Store your small engine machines either empty, or with non-ethanol fuel. A spray of WD-40(Water Dissipating) down the spark plug hole helps for long term storage. Hope this helps someone. Always good stuff Mr.Flagg👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

My new bought Stihl 261 Manual carb model is always minty fresh and spotless! After every time I use my saw, I use a paint brush and rag and clean the entire saw, I pull the bar oil + fuel caps and wipe any dirt around them, I pull the bar/chain off, I pull the top dust cover and clean the air filter and around the carb with a brush and some air, I also pull the recoil starter cover, and clean the flywheel, and recoil cover. All of this takes about 20 minutes and a paint brush, pulling the recoil starter is (4) screws and takes literally 45 seconds to remove it, all of this is very very easy to do for longevity of the saw. Any random areas where dirt and gunk hides will get cleaned up. My saw always looks fresh and new 😊 Dang thing was expensive as hell, I’m not gonna leave it looking like a junker. Also, every few uses I will pull the muffler to clean under that and make sure the exhaust is not leaking around the exhaust manifold outlet on the jug. Another process that is very fast and easy to do. The Pro Stihl saws are so easy to maintain and wrench on ourselves.

The mag rust issue needs to be sorted one way or another otherwise its gonna bite yaa. thought maybe the cylinder would be scored by the sound of those bearings. Definitely worth woodporting both. They're fantastic saws. Maintenance is key though.

@@richardflagg3084 those of us that use the saws every day, learn to clean them up after each day of use, it only takes a few minutes to make the saws last much longer. My MS 400c has a lot of use but I clean it up each day.

I'd always assumed it was condensation inside building up which rotts them. As it's always from the inside to out on bone dry saws, good 40:1 mix and there would never have been an issue. I'd happily rebuild them as they are got yrs in them still. I've had them with small holes and Jbweld has fixed them permanently never leaked.

Generally speaking magnesium will develop a thing gray patina (passivation in old chemists' parlance) when exposed to atmospheric humidity or water sprays that protects the underlying metal but when moisture is trapped on the surface by dirt, that patina will be eroded very slowly due to the aforementioned electrochemical activity, leading to the most common form old magnesium rot. The presence of contaminants such as chlorides will accelerate the process. Contant high air humidity (over 80%) will also speed up the corrosion process. Your standard pro-grade chainsaw is usually treated to prevent magnesium rot, or at least to slow it down but there's no cure for poor material handling. Keeping the saw clean and storing it in a low humidity environment will help bunches.

No expert here, but I understand that the chemistry of mag rot involves the low pH of the concrete. Mag rot usually occurs when exposed to bases (low pH) for extended periods of time. This turns the magnesium into oxides and hydrogen gas. Best prescribe would be to keep the surfaces clean and avoid the low pH and humid environments

Magnesium dissolves in acids, saltwater is hell on magnesium too. Saws used to cut palm trees and not cleaned out are almost sure to have mag rot. Might be a reaction in old fuel making it weakly acidic leading to storage mag rot??

I would charge normal shop time to clean up the exterior and interior of those 2 saws on top of any mechanical or performance work involved, why should you work for free to clean up someone else's mess. Don't give away your time and knowledge and sell your self short. The customer would not be coming to you to fix the problem if they could do it them selves. If the price to fix the 2 saws in question becomes cost prohibitive it's not your fault!
