Best thing to do is split the money. Pay someone for the hole. Then someone else for the pool job. Then someone to do the design for the cement work . then landscaping around it . no need to give one greedy person all of your hard earned money .

It's called a "draw". Most contractors don't have all that money lying around. They need "a little up front" to get supplies.

I feel bad for those ladies, its unfortunate but you have to do your homework on contractors, I'm a pool guy for 35 years and seen this the entire time, it's not commonly fortunately. Anyone getting a big project done pool or anything using builders and contractors check and see how long they've been in business in you're area.

Never, Ever, Never use a contractor who cannot finance his own work. If he wants advanced payment for anything he is not financially stable enough to do your work

I don't know if rules have changed, but something you can do is finance a pool into a home loan. It was 50% of the appraised pools value. This was years ago, so you'll need to check and the added value to a property will vary based upon where you live in the country. If you have access to gas spend the money to install a gas heater, even if you live in a place like Phoenix. We do cool down here in the Winter, so to have a pool that's useable 365 is important. At one point homes would change hands approximately every seven years, so plan for the future of other potential home owners. Allowing options is always the best way to go, unless you're fairly certain the next home will be your retirement place.
