Prescott Valley, AZ - Two Quad-city residents have invented a way to make moving storage containers easier, quicker and more affordable. The trick: turn the container into its own trailer.

That is genius. Great way to move empty containers to a new location without a lot of equipment. Would make it easy for people building tiny homes, storage buildings, etc from empty containers. Now we need to get Harbor Freight to make a version!

No. That setup will work well for repositioning one on a lot but not for moving one on a road. It can pull the container into places that a big truck can't fit into.

I built a dolly for carrying containers a while ago. Mounted high, over wheels to keep it under the 8'6" limit. I'd have preferred low, but the wide load permitting wasn't worth it. I mid mounted mine, with bolts and straps to secure it in place. Mid mounting the wheels also improves maneuverability, and allows a light weight tow vehicle without insane tongue weight. Are those 3500 lb axles? Probably OK got carrying half the weight of the container, but not the whole weight of the container. I've seen a few over width containers (8'6", or 10'). Your design looks expandable enough to move them. I see lights, but no wires. Wireless with battery? What about brakes? The rear wheel appears to have drums.

@JW...-oj5iw
@JW...-oj5iw 5 жыл бұрын
It does have a "breaking" system in place. The roof of the container could crack and crumple if the assembly takes a hard enough bump and the metal has fatigued. You know, like Khan. As to your assertion that anything over 750 kgs (750kg) needing a "breaking" system which is obviously a misnomer (braking is correct), the weight you have indicated is pathetically low. In English measure, 750kg translates to approx. 1650#. For those of you who don't get that, it is the designation for pounds, not hashtags, in this circumstance. Over here, we tow cars and trucks of varying weights. Few, if any, weigh less than 1650#. Even though virtually all have brakes, the towing vehicle rarely activates the towed vehicle's brakes. In the case of a heavy duty wrecker towing a truck with a semi trailer attached, the towing vehicle often has hookups to use the semi trailer's brakes in conjunction with the wrecker's. The same hookups are used when towing a semi trailer without a truck in between. The extensions, of course, are not used in a direct tow of the semi trailer. Now, all this stuff is to point out that the braking systems in use on towed vehicles are limited to air brakes linked to the towing vehicle's air braking system. Any combination of vehicles far exceeds 1650# even in the lightest circumstances. I don't have a data chart on hand, but I think it's safe to say that any conventional car weighs in excess of 2000#. Most, well in excess. As to the fact that cars are equipped with brakes, towing them correctly with a tow truck requires that the brakes are inactive during the tow. IMHO, the devices demonstrated in the video are designed for use in a very limited area to precisely place a container in a location that isn't readily accessible by conventional methods. Even though it could feasibly be used on the road, it doesn't have adequate ground clearance to accommodate the highs and lows it would encounter.

I know this pertains to storage containers, but I wonder if you can make a tow dolly set up for a vehicle where you can put a set of wheels like that under the rear wheels of the vehicle you’re towing and then run a bar all the way up to the front where the Frame underneath the front can bolt to and then that same bar be the hitch that you took up to the truck or a vehicle that would mean that you can store the whole thing in a space that a full-size car trailer would not take up.

hummm, like the idea -- and yes it is an invention. but as indicated below there are many concerns, the main ones being: what is the target application, what is the load capacity, what is the use effect on the container, and if hydrologics are used to actually get the tires under the container and properly support the container to what extent can a light duty truck safely handle the container?

Good idea, but now it's oversized and not legal on the highway without permits. Look at semi trailers. There is a reason the wheels are under, and not outside. Similar setup, but put the wheels underneath.

Not really a shipping container is only 8 feet wide so even if the wheels stick out a foot on each side it would only put it at 10 feet in a 12-16 foot lane. A M1 Abrams is 12 feet wide and street legal with the rubber pads on the tracks.
@king0cans

Andrew H The legal width in the united States and Canada is 8ft 6 inches wide. anything wider than that requires a oversize permit. Get your facts straight stupid.

Yes, it would be over 102" wide, but the towing company would have a blanket permit. This set up is only intended for moving an empty container a short distance.

Why don't you just load the container onto a tractor- trailer combination that's already designed for it?
@jimmyturner3715
@jimmyturner3715 7 жыл бұрын
Fullnoise because that involves either a big ass forklift or a small crane. this way a medium duty wrecker can move containers that are just sitting on the ground with ease
@allenmckinney9533
@allenmckinney9533 7 жыл бұрын
Fullnoise sometimes the location the container is going to doesn't have room for a trailer or crane. this method is good for tight spots.
@markfryer9880
@markfryer9880 7 жыл бұрын
True, but if you get a container in somewhere and it gets loaded, you have to be able to move it again once loaded or you create an even bigger problem.
@integr8er66
@integr8er66 7 жыл бұрын
The problem with it on the road is it is over width. You would have to put the tires under the container to make it legal width. I built one of these many years ago out of mobile home axels and still have it today. it works great. I also built a pintle hitch tongue to tow it with.
@AndrewSmith-pp6ir
@AndrewSmith-pp6ir 6 жыл бұрын
Because those tractor trailer side loaders cost over 100k new. and the fuckers charge $ 500 to move a container. A 20 ton crane also costs $500 minimum 4 hour hire.
