I'm glad I live in a 🇪🇺country where it's illegal to possess and wear weapons in public. Only those with government licences (like official/government employed wildlife hunters and people who belong to a gun/sports clubs). And their weapons are all stored at their work or shooting range. Being caught with illegal weapons (knives/pistols/guns) without a government permit, will land you in prison for 6 to 9 months - without a change for parole.

And that is something that I think is horribly shameful. I don’t know how other countries handle this but I do know from the beginning of the US soldiers have been dispersed and expected to blend back into their former life. Many probably didn’t like that life before they served. Expecting this of civil war era soldiers didn’t work for all and it clearly doesn’t work for all now. And again when people advocate for money to support our veterans people say it’s liberals wanting social programs. To me it’s helping people that we owe a huge debt to. I have always felt that way largely because I don’t come from a military family. It is horrible to expect young soldiers to just figure it all out with little resources for those who need it.

Can you imagine the uproar from the republicans and the corporate media if a democrat had been president during Covid and behaved the way Donny did? They would never have shut up about it- and they would have been correct for a change. ABC, CBS etc...(not to mention Fox) would have each done "in depth" reports into the dem presidents failures. I've been going by a - 400,000 estimate I saw, but I was musing about it just yesterday and came to the conclusion that 400,000 was far too conservative. I settled on 700,000- but 800,000 seems entirely plausible. If we include all his rallies and the people who followed his advice and went shopping at the height of the pandemic, plus the people those people spread it to, and the people they etc...on and on- 800,000 sounds much more than just fair.

This reminds me of the abolitionists position before the Civil War. The South kept sending politicians to Congress whom they wanted to see dueling and throwing hands. The North was the opposite, they wanted dignified representation. And so the South easily pushed the Northern congressmen around until a group of them got tired of it and said basically, "screw the union, screw dignity, if you attack us again, we are going to respond in kind." Downside is we got a war, but on the positive, we finally ended slavery. Not everyone can be reasoned with, but it is better to try.

It seems to me that any 18 year old (and the adults in their life) that wants/needs to walk around in their OWN FREAKING COUNTRY with an automatic weapon must think they are living in a war zone. And that is a dangerous perception of our communal reality. This world view could lead to an actual war.
@RobRoss
@RobRoss 15 күн бұрын
People in the military are given *weeks* of training regarding their firearms in Basic Training, and then MONTHS of training for specialized weapons systems, like machine guns, etc. Weapons are kept under lock and key and high security in armories, not left behind couches or in the closet or under the bed. When you *need* your weapon, you check it out of the armory with the proper credentials (i.e. military I.D.) and proper orders, and that transaction is recorded. Getting ammunition is even more regulated. Things may be different in actual war zones, but when you are not actually on the front lines (and not in a job that requires a firearm, like Base Security or Military Police, etc.) your weapons go back into the armory for safe keeping. At no time can you just pick up your M-16 because you feel like it. There needs to be a military purpose and there is a detailed accounting. We have nothing like this in the civilian world. An untrained 18 year old is NOT responsible enough to own an AR-15 or any other assault rifle.

With the Israeli defense Minister openly expressing criticism of Netanyahu and the war strategy going forward, I wonder whether Joe Walsh still has same thoughts about the US trying to condition aid. I also think it’s disingenuous to say that Biden hasn’t been with Israel, he’s literally losing votes and putting his election prospects at risk by being too supportive of Israel. I think it’s fair that critics should truthfully acknowledge this

(22:30) RE Biden's Response. I'm not sure that Joe Walsh has served in military operations or intelligence and so his red line is maybe not based on the history of how the kind of response he is advocating for is effective (remember Fallujah?). The disproportionate response by Israel to the horrific attack on October 7th resulted in over 30,000 civilian deaths, and turned bystanders in sympathizers and sympathizers into activists. The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is appalling and unacceptable. You can firmly believe in a sovereign Israeli nation and not support the mishandling of their military response. Biden's bear-hug of Bibi was not working to actually effectuate peace. How does Joe Walsh actually think Israel could have wiped out Hamas sooner without killing everyone on the ground, as Lindsey Graham has proposed?

Except the 18 year old is carrying a gun in a war and that too is debatable. Those guns that are used in a war make it so much easier to kill many in a matter of seconds should not be allowed on your streets. I live in NZ, we had one horrific mass shooting perpetrated by an Australian bc they have tough gun restrictions after they had a mass shooting in the 90s. Many of us did not know that these guns of mass destruction were allowed. It took our government a week to pass the ban of these guns. Btw the NRA tried to interfere and reached out to the idiot gun lobbyists here.

Great show. I think a couple of things have changed since we were republicans. For one…the country didn’t have The Bulwark and others reaching beyond legacy media invested in pro democracy leadership. Plus our courts have created a situation where it becomes imperative that Joe Biden appoint the next Supreme Court justices. Women think about their health care and life decisions every day and are going to vote for their best interests. Sometimes men forget that. Plus we can never let trump near classified information again.

An 18 year old joining the military where people are evaluated and the guns are highly regulated/controlled and they are highly trained is not at all equivalent to an 18 year old with potential mental problems walking into a gun store to buy an AR15 with no training whatsoever. I really hate that argument unless you want to also say people need to be evaluated and trained before making that purchase.

I’d be fine with allowing an 18 year old that serves in the military to have an AR-15 because they get training and when joining there are mental health screenings. The military is highly structured so carrying a weapon in that role doesn’t logically justify free access. The main reason against lowering the drinking age to 18 is that it would massively increases access to alcohol for everyone in high school. The age was moved up for a reason.
@catpaladin1
@catpaladin1 15 күн бұрын
The human brain is still rapidly developing until around age 26. The earlier one starts substance use, alcohol included - the greater the chance of addiction. Add alcohol and drugs to age 18 and you have some potentially out of control consequences. The dumb ones will drink anyway. But if we can save some kids from addiction Im for waiting.

I was appalled when Trump ran the first time. I and a bunch of my friends went into deep mourning when he won. Now, I know that his return to power would be utterly horrible for the country. It would take a generation or more to get back to anything resembling normal. I'm 75 so I won't have to deal with it all very long. It is my grand children that I am deeply worried about. @Joe Walsh, here’s an argument for you. An 18-year old in the military is under very strict discipline. That same 18-year-old at home has no oversight, no supervision over how they would use a gun. Drawing an equivalence between the two is not logical. If you see this, thanks for reading this comment, and it would “make my day” (in the best way) if you replied. I’m heartened by the humility and honesty you and Tim Miller are modeling. I hope we all can get back to civility again soon.

Part of the requirements for service, both getting in and staying in, is essentially proving that you're not a risk for being given a weapon.
