For a few weeks now, I've been sitting in front of my 55-inch smart TV every evening at a distance of one meter, have the headphones on and think I'm a spectator in the stands or on the roadside. I listen to your music for two to five hours every day. I am really excited. It's so much fun to see your discipline and hear wonderfully played music. No German wind orchestra can keep up with that. They play well too, but such a wonderful performance with such precise tones and simultaneous movements, only you can do that. Thank you to Kyoto and thank you also to your teachers for teaching you all of this. You are role models for the world's youth. A big thank you also to the many videographers for the countless videos on youtube. Greetings from Bavaria in Germany.

Hi, Courtney Coulston these are the hours of practice. 360 days during the year for the Brass Band Club. I was hoping that someone had them available, as I would have to search many videos comments to find this information. Anyways as the adage says " Practice Makes Perfect. ".

@@michaelgenestone For the most part, the students have dreamed of joining the band since they were in elementary school. This strengthens the bonds between 1st years and their 2nd and 3rd year seniors which already, as you say, are stronger in Japan than in “western” countries. On top of that, what the students have chosen to join is an extra-curricular club. It’s managed by the students themselves. They decide their own practice schedule and design their own choreography. So what drives them is essentially self-motivated. And though sweat and tears accompany their crazy hard work, they feel immense joy when they achieve the demanding standards which, in fact, they have set themselves. The result is really a wonder of the world.

They are the Swiss Watch of marching bands, precision, timing and great to look at, as well as such terrific musical talent. Incredible is the only word I can use. I can't stop watching their videos. I taught in a Chinese high school, a college and a university for more than 10 years and the contrasts are startling. My students couldn't even form a straight line so to see such disciplined and intricate movements as these Japanese students achieve while at the same time playing their instruments to really professional standards, leaves me in awe of them. There is hope for the world yet !!

Who said it's just a marching band? It is an orchestra that is capable and does everything, walks confidently and makes the audience happy, performs at various events and the audience is really excited about the performance. They participated in a clip that really made me lump in my throat. These are the best angels in the world and they will always stay that way and rise to a higher level.

Thank you for always supporting Tachibana High School. I have participated in the Rose Parade twice, but I think that I will not be able to participate in the Rose Parade at Tachibana High School unless the organizer sets up a special frame. Other high schools also have great skills, so we would appreciate your support.

There are 2 television programs which can answer your questions. One is for 2012 they got silver medal in all Japan marching contest and another one is for 2015 they got gold. In 2012 the team was lead by drum major Asada San(Horacha) and in 2015 lead by Okamoto san(Cony). They practice 40 hours a week, from 7 to 7 and only rest 5 days in the whole year.

Weekends may be practice, but I notice that they also pile up a lot of performances. Further, Sing Sing Sing is different marching as opposed to a static program and different further for indoor performances where they may have limitations with stage size. In fact they have a massive amount of variations.

There's a video that talks about their practices, I believe it was an hour or 2 BEFORE school and 3-4 hours after school, and like 12 hours on Saturday and Sunday, EVERY SINGLE DAY of the year, which amounts to about 60 hours per week or almost 3,120 HOURS PER YEAR, or about 1/3 of their lives (8,760 hours in a year) is spent practicing while in the band. Don't forget, there is also a lady, Hitomi Katamaru (SP?) in there doing all of this with a prosthetic leg, she plays flute, and with her will power and sheer determination to over come the challenges before her, I have no doubt she will succeed at everything she puts her mind to. She is definitely someone to look up to and admire.

Courtney, they practice 38.5 hours per week. 7am till 8.30 Monday till Friday. Then 4.00pm till 7.00pm. Saturday is 1.00pm till 7.00 pm. Sunday, 0900 till 7.00pm. this includes holidays as well. I believe they get 3 days a year off. They get a special honorific because they do 1000 days devoted to the band, although they do not seek it. They do it for the love of it. I think that these stats are correct, as far as I can remember from reading about them.

One of my all time favorite videos by Kyoto Tachibana SHS. A flawless performance of awe inspiring showmanship, professionalism and huge range of abilities. That video was KT SHS's full version of their audition submission video to be considered for invitation to the Rose Parade in 2018. Subsequently also was part of a entry for the Bandfest competition in Pasadena California during the week they were in the US. They ended up winning even over university marching bands!!!! They won a trophy from the US and a $2,500 monetary award from the Rose Bowl commitee. Not only are they extra exceptional performers, but humanitarian ambassadors as well. The $2,500 award they won, they donated to victims of the tsunami that hit Japan. KT SHS the orange wave that brings true sunshine and happiness to this world!!!!😊 Thank you Courtney!! Your enthusiasm for KT SHS always brings me a smile. God Bless.

The KT band always dances in their parades. They can march but they prefer to dance. They do work hours every day and all day on weekends. There are some videos of their training and it is rigorous. Kyoto Tachibana SBS Band put in an average of 38 hours a week (extra curricular). This number can increase to to 50 hours during the run up to a special competition event, by increasing weekend activities and adding half an hour to an hour to daily practice. Weekday practice begins at 7 am, when the school opens its doors, and continues after school ends, normally up to about 7 pm, but can continue after 7 pm at need.

Hi Courtney In your comments section below is a comment by Radocity. He/She has attached the RoseParade Bandfest Competition of what you just watched. The bit I would like you admire of this band, is for a moment at the beginning on the video. Is the introduction of a flute player in the band with a prosthetic left leg, Hitomi , nickname Kurara. She is a hero in my heart and embellishes your comments of hard work. If look closely at the start of the video Larry sent (nice one Larry), Kurara is one of the four flute players at the start. Take care

In 2011, there was a two part TV show which followed the training of a new class of Tachibana band members. THey were so impressed that they came back and did another two part series for the 2012 year. (Oddly, in the 2012 video, as far as I can tell, they do not mention their appearance at the 2012 Rose Parade nor a fire which apparently destroyed some uniforms and instruments in 2011. For some reason, theseparticular videso show up and are taken down and reappear for no clear reason. At present, there seem to be only one show from each series available at the moment. kzbin.info/www/bejne/aqKwoIptiKakobc kzbin.info/www/bejne/i4Gsq62OnbWmeNE

I agree with Light Flight on the number of hours each of 51 weeks/year for practice. Additionally I'd like to point out that this is a club. They choose the music and work out the choreography for marching and for stage presentations. The overall practice plans are determined by the drum major. Even the design of their traditional orange uniforms was done by a graduate of the school who went on for a career in fashion design.

Dedicated.... In Drum Corps we say "Ya gotta Wanna". You have got to want to do it and do it right. These girls could hold their own against and corps or band in the world....

Could you please post the link to the actual video please? Saw them perform in 92 through 94 when I was stationed in Japan. They have always been this good.

Hi John. Wow, how lucky and blessed you are to have been there in the 90's and see KT perform. That's awesome. Would love to hear more.

I know that the Ohio State marching band practices 30 hours/week, so your estimate is probably pretty close.

The other thing is just because a band practices more, does not mean they are any better. A band with awful instruction and student attitude will get nowhere no matter how much time they put in compared to a band with great staff and student attitude in a very shirt amount of time
