How does an entire, financially successful family degrade to the point that they have to be in control of everything all the time. Wendi complained to everyone she knew about Dan and their divorce. To say it was contentious is an understatment. They were both lawyers trying to outsmart each other and filed court motions about ownership of even a tennis racquet, and many other things have come out in evidence where the family all thought Dan was super aggressive and vindictive as a co-parent (as he had to fight sneaky Wendi) in the courtroom. At the time of his death they still had several pending divorce motions, including one to limit the visits of Wendi's parents with the sons as grandma Adelson was calling him "stupid" in front of his sons. So, basically, the Adelson's hated Dan because they thought he was making their lives miserable and they were out of control, Wendi was too far away from them and "lacked support," the mom especially calls him an a-hole and zealot who would taint his sons with his beliefs. There is SO much more there with all the families co-dependency and egos (Charlie has some weird mommy-Savior complex issues and I think he planned this more for Donna more than Wendi). Finally, Dan owed Wendi approx. 100K from her buyout of their house in the divorce and he wouldn't pay it and accused her of hiding assets and was possibly seeking her disbarrment from practicing law in Florida. This incensed everyone. He was a threat to their happiness, Wendi's career, their visitation, etc. Quite basically the murder motive was money and revenge.
