This man Richard Rohr is one of the few--the very few--priests I've met over seventy-six years of experience who understands what the term "Christ" means. All the rest of them understand is what they got told to think it is at the seminary. I'm glad people like him exist.

I can't get enough of this man and his teaching! To me he is the face of God on Earth right now, loving, non judgmental, ecumenical, open-hearted and humble. And what I really love the most about him is the way he shows himself to be totally human as well and just as subject to error as I am. What a blessing to hear this from a man such as he is. It gives me great hope and inspiration!

In my journey into retirement, after fulfilling my role, and now allowing my inner letting go of all the weight of knowledge needed for that role, is allowing me to become NO-thing in order to be empty for a reason… to become ontologically, spiritually more like God. Wow. I have always struggled with the term deification. I think because of the “role(s)” that must be completed, we can only let ourselves let go a bit at a time. In this stage of life, I have no responsibilities that hold me back from the journey… I am grateful.

One of the things I remember asking was "My God, why have I forsaken Thee?" It became clear to me after I had been awakened from a long sleep in consciousness. Almighty God didn't ever forsake me, but I wasn't aware of it.

I marvel at the wisdom of Rohr's words. My take on his message is in terms of the marvellous writing and insights of Iain McGhilchrist's books and videos, such as "The Master and his Emissary: the Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World". Essentially, the problem of the dominant 'either/or' way of thinking over 'and' thinking is the problem of the domination, literally, of our left brain function (the 'emissary') over the right (the 'master'). Each hemisphere works differently, each specializes, each is vital for survival, each produces a different world, and a different person in us. See Jill Bolte Taylor's TED talk (and book) "My Stroke of Insight" for a fascinating description of these differences. Richard Rohr's invitation to the contemplative vision is a call to shut down the left hemisphere (whose specialty is making distinctions, ordering and creating hierarchies) and return it to it's rightful and proper role as 'emissary', and to open up our right hemisphere (the source of unity, visions, love, relationships and so on). Our left brain specialized function has been brilliantly excavated and exemplified by Aristotle, who declared that all logic (left brain logic) is rooted in the Law of Contradiction (the foundation of 'either/or' thinking). The key to understanding the ancient Greeks is to know they embodied this and lived it - it's what gave rise to the Olympic Games. (read Nietzsche's amazing short essay "the Contest" to understand the central place competition had for those ancient Greeks). In contrast, the Hebrew world came up with a far different approach - instead of the Law of Contradiction, they evolved a Law of Relations, which gave rise to the art of interpretation (the tradition of the Mishna, to accompany the tradition of the Torah) and modern hermeneutics (see Susan Handelman's "The Slayers of Moses: The Emergence of Rabbinic Interpretation in Modern Literary Theory" for more on this). The difference in these 'laws' can be seen in two very different moral systems that have arisen from them and which seem to permeate our modern world, unresolved. One is the Platonic moral vision of the Great Chain of Being, rendered by Plato as 'everything in its place'. In other words, there's a divine or natural order to the world, and everyone and everything should stick to their place (easy to see how this would buttress the inclinations of racists, or any kind of bigotry). Of course, it's the left brain that sorts the order out and pegs things to their places - that's Aristotle's work in a nutshell. The other moral code, however, is the Golden Rule, which confounds the Law of Contradiction through the exercise of moral imagination, inserting the challenging 'and' between differences - to see the other as self, and to see the self in other. The Law of Contradiction would have them eternally separated, categorically. The Golden Rule would have that separation overcome. (read Cynthia Ozick's marvellous essay "The Moral Necessity of Metaphor" that lays this out beautifully). Both the left and right brain hemispheres are wonderfully imaginative, the left in creating a world of discrete 'things', separating them, categorizing them, establishing hierarchies in a grand flourishing of 'reason' and the belief systems that arise from our reasoning ability. The right brain welds, joins, marries, and loves. The left brain specializes in disjunctions. The right in conjunctions.

Further to what I wrote above, I see in Brother Rohr's message an illumination of the meaning of Genesis and the creation of the world. For 6 days, God 'created' the world. I see in these 6 days a lot of separating, naming, building, making, the specialization of the left brain. Shakespeare understood this process of creation, in Hamlet, where he says "imagination [the poet's pen] bodies forth the form of things unknown and gives to airy nothing a local habitation and a name..." But on the 7th, God 'rested' and 'saw that it was good'. I see in this, the specialization of our right hemisphere. For the right brain to 'see', and to see 'the good', to see beauty, integrity, and truth, means having to let go of all that busy building, making, separating, and naming. It means having to let go of work, and to see the big picture, including the ongoing nature of the work of Creation. It's flaws and incompleteness... is good. The work is good. The 7th day is not literally a Sabbath 'day' (although it's good for us to take a day for it), since a 'day' literally is an entirely relative thing - ours made meaningful by the orbit of our planet around our sun - but it urges us to take time to switch our mental modalities from left to right, and find that Sabbath moment, that Sabbath consciousness, wherein we see that it is good. In the Sabbath moment, we find the "Center for Action and Contemplation"!

Thanks for that, very interesting! It's the same in trauma work...learning how to use the right side of the brain through mindfulness or contemplation to bring truth and love to our inner children...

@@thejukeboxhero6387 THE JOY OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE The glory of a righteous man is the testimony of a good conscience. 2, Cor. 1. 12 Keep a good conscience and you will always have joy. Sweetly will you take your rest if your heart does not condemn you? Prov. 3. 24 Never rejoice except when you have humbly walked in the Law of the Lord. John 15: 4 -7 The wicked never have true joy; neither do they feel internal peace, because “There is no peace to the wicked,” says the Lord, Isaiah 48: 22. Isaiah 57; 20 - 21. And if they shall say, ”We are in peace, evils will not come upon us and who shall dare to hurt us?” Believe them not, for the wrath of God will rise suddenly, and their deeds shall be brought to nothing, and their projects shall perish. 2, Peter 2, 1 -22 Prov. 29: 1. To glory in tribulation is not hard for him that loves, for so to glory is to glory in the Cross of Our Lord. Gal. 6: 14 -18. Philippians 3: 17-20. Phil. 3: 8-12 That glory is short-lived which is given and taken by men. The glory of this world is always accompanied by sorrow. 1 John 4: The glory of good men is in their own consciences, not in the mouths of men. The joy of the just is from God and in God and they rejoice in the Truth. 1 Cor. 13; 6 - 10 He that desires true and everlasting glory values not that which is temporal. And he that seeks after temporal glory or does not heartily despise it shows himself to have but little love for that which is heavenly. For the carnal mind is enmity against God. Romans 8: 1- 39. That man has great tranquility of heart, which cares neither for praise nor being despised and reviled. He will easily be content and in peace whose conscience is clean and pure before God. You are not more holy if you are praised neither anything the worse if you are despised. What you are, is what you are, neither can you be said to be greater than God sees you to be. If you consider well what you are within yourself, you will not care what men say of you. Man beholds the face, but God looks into the heart, Jeremiah 17: 9- 14, True worshipers, worship in the Truth of the Words of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit only moves on the pure water of the Word of God. The Saints overcome the deception of the world, by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony, and they love not their own lives even unto their deaths. Rev. 12: 10 - 14 Man considers the actions, but God weighs the intentions. To do well always and to hold yourself in small account is a mark of a humble soul. Matt. 5: 1- 48 To refuse comfort from any created thing is a sign of great purity and interior confidence. Matt 5: 8 He, who seeks no outward testimony for himself, shows plainly that he has committed himself completely to God. Psalm 1: “For not he who commends himself is approved, but he who God commends” says Saint Paul. 2 Cor. 10: 17 -18. Every truly, Born Again from Above, child of God is a little Christian /Anointed Son of God, they are living Tabernacles.. No man can count, the number of Saints, living on earth in our generation, who are sealed with the Seal of God on their foreheads, till each one comes into the fullness of the knowledge of God the Father of Jesus Christ our Lord. The Last will be first and the first will be last.. When Jesus told the disciples they would be greatly rewarded in heaven for what they had given up on earth, He was contrasting their sacrifice with the rich young ruler’s lack thereof-the young man had been unwilling to give up much of anything for Christ’s sake (Matthew 19:16-22). God, who sees the heart, will reward accordingly. The disciples are an example of those who may be first, and they happened to be poor (but their poverty was not what makes them first in heaven). The rich young ruler is an example of those who may be last, and he happened to be rich (but his wealth was not what makes him last). The Lord’s statement that the last would be first and the first last might also have held special meaning for Peter, who had just spoken of having “left all” (Matthew 19:27). Perhaps Jesus detected in Peter’s statement a bit of boasting-Peter was on the verge of becoming spiritually complacent-as the rich young ruler was, but for a different reason. Jesus’ response in verse 30 may have been an indirect warning to Peter to always find his sufficiency in Christ, not in his own sacrifice. After all, without LOVE, even the greatest sacrifice is worthless (1 Corinthians 13:3). He also said that not everyone who says, "Lord! Lord!" will enter the Kingdom of Heaven, only those who do the will of my Father in Heaven. Matthew 7: 21 Those who are the Son's of God, are led by the Holy Spirit of Christ. 🕊 ✝️ 🙏 📖 😇🕊
