The Cloud of Unknowing Pt. 3: Who is Called to Contemplative Prayer? by William Meninger

Fathers Thomas Keating, William Meninger and Basil Pennington began the Centering Prayer movement in the 1970’s to renew the Christian tradition of contemplation. This series, “The Christian Contemplative Heritage - Our Apophatic Tradition,” locates Centering Prayer in the mainstream of the Christian Contemplative Tradition which retrieved, reclaimed and reappropriated the classical inspirations of our apophatic tradition. Recorded at the Contemplative Outreach Institute at the Beech Grove Benedictine Center in January 1994, the entire series has not been available since the days of VHS videocassettes, until now.

This is a phenomenal talk. What he says about charismatics clearly articulated what I couldn’t understand with 3 simple chapters: first Corinthians 12, 13, and 14. Thanks!

Does anyone know what version \ translation of The Cloud is being used in these talks? I have a copy of the original Middle English version (which is hard work) and a copy of Carmen Acevedo Butcher's translation (that in parts I'm unsure of). A third source might be helpful in my search for an authentic reading / understanding of the original as possible. Blessings from Ireland.

I listened to these videos about two (2) months ago, as a result I did a Google search and found these books on sale at a discount book website and ebay: (1). Fr. Meninger mentioned there are many translations from the 14th century English, as I recall he used the translation by Fr. William Johnston, S.J. because it was a recent translation and this version was the most popular at the time of his presentation, and (2) Fr. Meninger stated that he had given this presentation on the Cloud to thousands of individuals, but he noticed that very few people aft his presentation actually read The Cloud because it was difficult to understand. So, he decided to write a very loose "translation" with a commentary..."The Loving Search for God". God Bless.

Thank you Stevie for the kind and helpful reply. There's lots of helpful information that I will explore. I am coming from a Reformed Protestant background (thus the pedantry for right words) and I'm discovering the richness of Roman Catholic spiritually. The Northern Ireland peace process has facilitated new conversations about faith and identity and consequently I've been blessed and challenged by a faith tradition I once considered alien. The peace of Christ to you.
