As someone that spent nearly ten years at MorningStar, I really appreciate this overview. So sad to see the abuse and scandals that are continuing to be covered up and dismissed there.

Cults are bad, but no being required to read a book to make sure you are on the page of the same religious group you are attending to join is not a red flag. It is a minimum barrier of entry. You are wanting to join an organization based on ideological practices If you are not willing to take part in those ideological practices, you do not belong in that organization Full Stop no exceptions.

Cults exist on a spectrum, a continuum of control and influence. Required reading of the leader of a group can be a form of information control and is often, though not always, a characteristic of a cult. Many cults have required reading from the leaders, like Scientology and Jonestown. Some organizations that aren’t cults may have required reading as well, but usually when only or mostly reading from the group founder is required, it can be an indication of high control.
