Thank you Peggy. I will be doing some more slow, step by step, cane tutorials soon, but as I make a living (or try to ) from Polymer, I need to swap between these free tutorials and some that I may get some income from - I hope that makes sense? However there are enough Cane designs out there that I should be able to keep people happy with both. xx

Thanks Angel. This was a new camera angle for me, and the trouble with doing such a long video is that occasionally I got so involved in what I was doing I forgot that I was also on video - sorry if it spoiled it for you. I will be doing more free video tutorials, but I also need to make a living as a clay artist, so I will be swapping between doing paid tutorials and the freebies I do too. Obviously I can't afford to share all my knowledge for free, I hope that makes sense? But I will keep you all going with enough freebies that hopefully you will be happy. You never know, people may even decide to buy one of my tutorials occasionally too, if I am very lucky. Thank you so much for your comments xx

@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you Mary that is so kind of you to say. The answer basically is experimenting, and thinking "what would it look like if I just did this, or that?". What you don't see are the numerous designs I tried in the past, and that have gone into the scrap bin. Luckily my mind just keeps spinning with new things to try. As for the colours, I think because I was already a professional Oil Painter, and I had spent a long time studying colours, that gave me a good background when it came to choosing my colour schemes. I also have a little trick I do with a Natasha Bead, that I will share on a video tut shortly. :)

Wonderful video, so useful! I've been struggling to cover round ornaments and such for a while. I have to watch the video again a few times, but is there a basic size of cane that you start with for a certain egg size? And you do two rows with the same size and start reducing?

Thank you for your comments. No two eggs are the same, so it is a matter of measuring each one. At some stage I will do a full tutorial on how I formulate the size of the slices, but that would probably have to be one of my paid tutorials, as sadly I need to make a living at doing this, like so many others :( I hope you understand?

Fiona Abel-Smith PolyOriginals Ah. I was hoping for a different answer! I was going to try using locally produced eggs, (treating my household to an omelette supreme!) But when I have used eggs for other projects, (mostly big duck eggs) they do pong a bit, no matter what I use to clean them, so I leave a hole or two in the clay so I can rot them out with vinegar. I suppose I could do that with the base layer of clay, and fill in the holes before putting the caning on top. Who supplies blown eggs? Local farmers? Or is there a national organisation doing them? I've never noticed them advertised.
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry Pam, but good luck with the eggs. I have used chicken eggs in the past, which I blew myself, and then gently boiled to remove any smell or residue, and they always worked fine? I hope your work out okay :)
@Naturally336
@Naturally336 6 жыл бұрын
I raise ducks, chickens, geese and turkeys. I have found that because the PH is opposite between the chicken and duck/geese eggs that if I boil them with baking soda it helps. Hmm, not sure if that's clear. Basically I blow the eggs first, then boil the shell in water that I've added baking soda to. If using chicken eggs though I boil in salt water. Personally I prefer to use the duck or goose eggs though because they are tougher and I break less when blowing them out. I also let them dry in the sun as the UV rays tend to help with the deodorizing.

Fiona, you are a marvel! I just happened on you, and am so taken with what I’m seeing. You must just be starting to post these videos...I will be proud to think that I found you when you had approx 800 subscribers because I just know that soon you’ll have many, many thousands of devotees. This cane is a real tour de force! I too am a caner, love working with Polymer clay. What brand of clay do you use? What brought you to clay, and how did you get so proficient? Sorry for so many questions....I hate that they take you from your work table, but I am genuinely interested. You have really wowed me, and made me smile from ear to ear on a cold March Monday😊

Oh Julia, thank you so much for such lovely comments. Yes, although I have been teaching polymer locally for many years, I have only just started posting videos. My first was December 2017. I use all the brands of clay, different ones for different projects depending on what I am doing. I am a professional artist, painting in oils, and it was a friend, Ange Smith, who brought me to polymer clay when she demonstrated a pansy cane at my local craft club. I immediately knew that I had to make canes, and have been doing so ever since, that was 12 years ago. I now spend more time with Polymer than I do with my paints, but love swapping between the two, whenever the urge takes me. Don't worry about the questions, I love to chat to fellow caners!! :)

@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I really like seeing all the different ways people do something as it can sometimes give you ideas for other things. My problem with other tutorials (of any sort, not just clay), is that no one is as succinct in relaying information & concise in their movements as Fiona Abel-Smith. You are a master & i've become quite spoiled by you. I must admit, i get overly frustrated & impatient with the hesitant & insecure. They stumble along repeating things in different ways just to make sure you get it. I'm also annoyed when they unnecessarily move & turn pieces as if they're nervous. I fast forward fairly often now when watching other tutorials. Never one of yours, lol. Yours are extremely relaxing. I sometimes find the cane construction quite mesmerizing. I also find your voice & delivery is very soothing. You would be great telling bedtime stories, lol. So, thank you very much for the extreme pleasure of watching you create & the added bonus of therapeutic de-stress sessions. This is amazing! I’m so impressed! Your canes are just gorgeous and when you finally put them altogether I couldn’t believe the size of it. Incredible skill and the final result is beautiful. Where do you buy goose eggs? I’m in the UK.

Thanks Marion :) I buy mine from EBay in the UK, search under 'blown goose eggs', although I am sure many other places will have them too xx

Once again I am left in awe of your talents and could watch you work all day long! Just wondering if you sell goose eggs in your Etsy store, so heading over there now! You are a true artist of the first calibre! ❤️

Thank you Anita. No my store only has my tutorials in it at the moment. I am not able to ship anything for a few weeks as I work on sorting something out, but once that is finished, everything will go back in the shop, including any new eggs I do. In the past they have gone as soon as I have finished them !! xx

So I noticed when I looked! It sounds like you are working undercover for MI5 😁 Please send me a private message with the cost of one of your eggs, if I can afford it, give me a heads up please as it's beautiful. I'd need to find some sort of stand to show it off...

Yes, still only lightly buffed so far, but I am toying with the idea of polishing it to a high shine :)

What causes mine to bubble as it bakes? I'm covering ceramic eggs.
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 4 жыл бұрын
that sounds like the temperature is too high? or maybe something in/on the ceramic egg is causing a temperature hike in places ? Do you tent your piece in foil when you bake? This helps protect it a bit. Lastly, do you use an oven thermometer? I know this is basic knowledge, and apologise if you already know all of that, but bubbling does sound to me like too high a temperature. I hope that is of help. :)
@coldcynic2213
@coldcynic2213 4 жыл бұрын
@@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals I do tent my bakes and I keep a thermometer in the oven. I usually preheat, but last time I didn't and both times it bubbled. I typically use premo but sometimes it may be a blend with Sculpey 3.
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals
@FionaAbelSmithPolyOriginals 4 жыл бұрын
@@coldcynic2213 Yes, sorry to state the obvious, its difficult to tell how experienced someone is from a simple comment. I still think it is unlikely to be just the clay, even without pre-heating, it is more likely to be some component part within the ceramic you are using that has caused some problem :( Sorry I can't be of more help, and I will keep everything crossed for you that it doesn't happen again. Good luck :)

I understand this wasn’t a tutorial and your kind enough to share, however if there was a way to play KZbin in slow motion I’d do it! Just love to watch you, just not quite so fast.

I know Mary, this was just a video, though I will be doing more actual tutorials soon. As I make my living from Polymer Clay, both selling finished pieces, but also through workshops and tutorials which you can buy, I have to be very careful not to duplicate what I am asking people to pay for, and what I am sharing for free. There are enough cane design to let me do both, but occasionally I will do one of these fast forwarded videos so that people can see the whole process, rather than just see the individual bits of cane making - hope that makes sense? I am so glad you like watching the videos and there will be more to follow. Thank you so much for commenting :)

You can indeed slow down or speed up any video you wish on KZbin. Click on the 3 vertical dots (top right of video) and select playback, then select the speed you wish. Play around with it, until you can see it as slow as you wish. Hope that helps? 😊

I guess it depends on the platform you are watching from because for me it looks like a gear in the bottom right corner, if you click on that one of the options is speed and you can change it to your preference.

Thanks Bella, so sorry you didn't like the music. I only realised when I started to do the video that of course you have to pay for almost all music, so when I found the site where you could download for free as long as you include all their details in the video description, I was so relieved. I must admit, the track has grown on me more and more as I listened to it while I was doing the editing, but I appreciate it will not be to everyone's liking. xx
