Since I never saw Black Sabbath before because I'm young and they announced retirement (or that's what they want us to believe), I took every chance I got to see them this year. I ended up seeing them three times: the first at The Forum, the second at the Hollywood Bowl, and the third at the Ozzfest Meets Knotfest. Got to say, it was unbelievable. Even with the same setlist every night, all performances were very enjoyable and definitely experiences I'll never forget. The third and final time I saw them, once they finished playing and gave their farewell, I waved them goodbye and said, "Thank you boys for everything, I appreciate you all and what you have done so much." I do wish Bill Ward played with them at least a few songs.

Sabbath is to important to hard rock and metal to not be respected. hell they've basically touch every heavy rock genre in some way. they weren't the only founding band of course. but paramount regardless. Defenitions don't change but if the music has, then rebrand it! Sabbath in both Ozzy and Dio eras are the closest defenition of true metal.!

5. Understandable 4. Listen to something besides the Paranoid album. If you hear the Never Say Die album and say it's simple you have dicks in your ears. 3. Not a valid excuse, except for Sharon. 2. I understand the logic, but if you don't like them for that you are a music snob and probably like 5 finger death punch. 1. Ok, that's fine, but it's your loss. Pretty much anybody who isn't very familiar with Vol. 4 through Never Say Die has no ground to stand on. I am a rabid Black Sabbath fan and even I am sick of the same old tracks that get radio play and get put on compilations. Their albums only get better as you go until 1978.
@cdsmetalhead997 жыл бұрын
Judge Lazar Never Say Die is pretty simplistic actually. It's very clear that Tony was trying to emulate the popular rock bands of the time to get more sales. This could already be seen on parts of Sabotage, which was great nonetheless, and it was obvious on the next two albums, with songs like Rock 'n' Roll Doctor, A Hard Road, and It's Alright. I agree with you about their first six albums though. Paranoid is fairly complex if you listen to songs other than the title track.

My response to each one 5: An unsteady line-up may be annoying, but they still produced decent material during this time (mostly). 4: As a guitarist myself, Iommi is the god of the riff work. He took very basic blues patterns and added a heaping fuck ton of distortion and atmosphere... Simple, and solid as fuck. 3: Ozzy is not Sabbath... Iommi is the only consistent member, and he was always the backbone of Sabbath. 2: WHO GIVES A FUCK? Metal didn't fucking exist! Them, Zeppelin, Motörhead, etc literally started the fires that forged metal... Also, listen to neon nights and tell me that shit isn't metal. 1: You are expected to like Sabbath for the same reason that you respect your grandfather. If you are a metalhead, they are your musical elders... You don't need to listen to them like you are a cult member (like me), or you can just respect them.

Back in the 70's heavy metal was termed heavy/hard rock. That term covered bands like Kiss, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Deep Purple, Scorpions etc. I noticed the term heavy metal for the first time in '77, I think. For some reason one decided to rename the genre, and suddenly old bands were called heavy metal. I think heavy rockers was influenced what happened with punk, which just was a renamingof the old garage rock (Stooges, Velvet Underground, MC5) from the late 60's. Later punk was renamed again to grunge. It seems that some people need to feel they are participating in something new, but it's really old stuff with a new name, which is clear to see if you have lived for awhile. Consequently Black Sabbath is heavy metal.

Please don't hate me. I have absolute upmost respect and admiration for bands from the NWOBHM movement. They started what would go on to create tons and tons of sub genres. Sure other bands before guys such as Black Sabbath were doing it too, but those are the bands that are considered to be the fathers of modern metal. Having said that, I grew up on thrash, so while I respect Black Sabbath, I can't say they're my favorite. Not that they're a bad band (they are amazing) but because of my own personal taste. Please don't crucify me for this

For number two, I must say this: Nobody could have expected it, but if Black Sabbath weren't around, metal would have picked up anyway. They accelerated the destined creation of what would later become known as metal. A different name would have been known to the world just as Ozzy Osbourne and Black Sabbath, and we'd be having this exact dilemma of "who founded metal?". Fortunately, many of us can enjoy it without feeling the need to examine its very roots, which is simply impossible.

This comment will probably get me killed but I'm just gonna say it. I hate Black Sabbath because: 1. The riffs sound like something a 6 year old wrote. Especially with songs like "Iron Man". Black Sabbath has some of the dumbest and most boring sounding riffs I've heard and I've never understood why people praise their music so much. The guitar player can barely even play guitar. I literally feel dumber after listening to a Black Sabbath song. 2. They didn't even invent heavy Metal! Seriously, anyone who actually thinks Black Sabbath invented Heavy Metal needs serious help. Saying Black Sabbath invented Metal is like saying Asking Alexandria created Metalcore. What about bands like Blue Cheer who came before Black Sabbath? The first Black Sabbath album wasn't even a Metal album! It has flutes and harmonics on the album and the riffs sound like Blues Rock. It sounded way more like a Blues Rock album than anything else. They didn't even start tuning lower until later in their career. 3. Ozzy did absolutely nothing as a frontman. His bass player writes ALL the lyrics for him! Look it up if you don't believe me. Not only does Ozzy not write anything for the band - he sings the riff in almost every Black Sabbath song! "I am Iron man!" In songwriting classes the one thing they teach you NOT to do is sing the riff which is what Ozzy does in almost every Black Sabbath song. He does it because he's too uncreative to create any vocal melodies. Ozzy is actually one of the most untalented frontman I can think of. Before I receive the hate please realize that I understand their influence but this is just my opinion on them that's all.

The "reunion" recording of the 13 album without Bill Ward is unacceptable. Bill said it was for unfair contract terms, Ozzy (hmm...band) said he couldnt cut it musically (odd coming from him, of all people) Utter bullshit - I bought and heard the album and there is nothing there to require a drummer to even break a sweat! The MAJESTY that could have been this product with Bill Ward would have been immeasurble. But...No...13 made it to #1(US), first #1 since Paranoid in 1970(UK). I already had an uneasy feeling listening to the 13 album with no Bill. Then it happened...the album closes with the thunder, rainfall, tolling bell that signaled the intro to the original Black Sabbath (ALL of it: Band/album title/song title), here closing without a key member, yet one who was a key part of the creation. I almost threw up - like I said, very hard going thru the album without Bill in the mix, but this outtro was like a slap in the face. Then again, the lean years Sabbath dudes from the 80s-90s don't know jack shit about self respect...Geezer played bass, stage right, on Ozzy's solo band for a tour! (Thanks boss). Then the MR (sans Dio) lineup accepted to OPEN for Ozzy on Ozzfest (Iommi-shame on you, and Butler-been there, done that). Dio said fuck this and left the band with balls intact. Iommi IS Sabbath - always was, yet we have the creator of metal riffs laying down to Ozzy (Sharon?) because he showed him and Butler (and BILL!) who is boss.

There is no denying the talent and greatness of this band, but they did nothing that made me feel happy while listening to it. I always likened this form of darkened hard rock or metal to modern day horror movie music. Not my thing at all.

Number one is the most egregious and juvenile reason to not like something: because it's popular. Speaking for myself, I love music from every genre imaginable and have one requirement for an artist: do they speak to me?

I understand that these could be reasons to not really like them, but to hate them? That's ridiculous, great songs, great guys, great history and they invented heavy metal for fucks sake

10. Fluffy stuff like Fluff 9. Tony Martin was dreadful live 8. Probably inspired Black Veil Brides 7. Bill Ward's tights 6. They (they) they (they) they (they) went and played Sun Cityyyyy

If people hate Sabbath because they're not metal...well they never really were metal, they've inspired metal, and had a couple songs that had metal subjects when their peers wern't as dark as them, they were hard rock/blues rock. And for those that hate them because they "aren't metal", chances are its just young folks that listen to that metalcore shit.

i didnt know people were capable of hating black sabbath

The only reason I hate Black Sabbath is that they don't have enough albums with Ozzy. Dio put out some good shit with them, Dehumanizer being one of my personal favorites (Computer God always gives me a weird rush of motivation to work on my programming assignments), but Ozzy is the OG. It's disheartening to know that they won't be making any more material. Oh well, I'll always have Master of Reality to jam to.

SIMPLE SOUND? Whoever said that does not know how to appreciate actual music.

For me from Sabbath’s first title to Sabotage, there is no metal band anywhere that can’t top them, period. Not Metallica, not Maiden, no one. After Sabotage, I couldn’t care less.

Please dn't hate me, but I don't think the supposed inventor of the washing machine should be credited if what he used to wash his clothes was a frobble gobbler (?).

Black Sabbath aren't my favourite, they're alright. But I have to respect them because without them Metal may not even exist.

I listened to them in high school, must be a hippy yet. Because I still crank it up when I play their songs.
