The rig for the recording of this tune was a little unique - Fretless StingRay, played with a pick, with OC-2 and a truly heroic amount of compression. Levin apparently used 2 compressors, one at the beginning of the signal chain and one at the end. One of the all-time great bass lines in a pop hit for sure! Great work @coversolutions
@Snandra664 жыл бұрын
I think he also tuned down his E string down to Eb but kept the rest in standard?

Plus, the 8v preamp in a stingray is itself a compressor

Actually Levin used a Sabre (two pickup bass) the "Classic albums" documentary revealed it as such.

I love comments like these. I had a prolonged hiatus from guitar and bass for about 8-9 years, but I started playing again nearly 6 years ago. It’s been so much fun learning new things and I’ve actually gotten way better than I was before I originally stopped playing. It really is a great hobby.

One of your best covers. Tone was plenty sufficient. Hard to nail Levin’s exact tone on this one. Bravo!
@jasonfifi4 жыл бұрын
levin used multiple output sources when doing octave effects, so if you want to nail it for real, you need to use 2 amps or direct into the board twice. you can either split the signal before the octave, or use a unit with a dry-through/out.
Man, talk seriously... how in the world would anyone create a bass line like this genius song line! Unbelievable!

The reason why you're not so happy with the sound you achieved on this song is, Tony Levin played the Bass Line using his "Funk Fingers" . That means he attached short Drumsticks to his Index and Middlefinger and hit the Strings with 'em. He didn't use a Pick on this song. Watch Secret World Live Concert on DVD.
@CoverSolutions4 жыл бұрын
@@SuperstarMcHammercool wow that's nice. I could have tried that
@SuperstarMcHammercool4 жыл бұрын
@@CoverSolutions Sorry I have to correct myself. The Song at this Concert he useses Funk Fingers was "Steam". I tried this method a few years ago... Oh boy... Practice, practice, practice, but the sound you get once you found out how to use the Funk Fingers correctly is amazing. Long live Tony Levin. By the way... I also learned a lot from your Videos. Now I know how to play Tool's " Schisms " correctly. Thanks for that.

This bass riff has taken over my mind, it’s insanely funky
@andrewhigdon834610 ай бұрын
More like plodding. It might seem funky to us white boys, but compared to funky funky, this is plodding, just like the movements in the video. As if a burdened step was taken for every snare hit. The rest is the body preparing itself for the next step, so burdened, so laborious, so bludgeoning to what may be underfoot. Like some type of heavy weight hammer, used generally for destroying otherwise impervious structures, which apparently can include relationships and attitudes as well as the tangible. Who knew? Funky? Okaaaay. Right. Like funk. Funkesque. Alluding to funk. Reporting as funk. Not funk. There IS a halfhearted funk break, lots of them, but overthought and underfelt. But yeah. No. Funky -ish ain’t funky. That chic is so stunning! Or she’s stunning-ish. The ear of the beholder doesn’t redefine funk. It doesn’t even stank.
