A choir of singers from many parts of Scotland assembled and directed virtually during the period of Covid restrictions by Joy Dunlop. These three well-known favourites were sung 'live' (at last !) at the National Mòd Choir Concert (translations below 'Show more').
SINE BHÀN - Fair Jeannie (or ‘Sheena’) - written from the WW1 trenches
(Chorus)
A flower of the girls, fair Jeannie
a star of the lasses, young and loyal,
she is the sole subject for my song,
my heart's love, the young maid.
------------------
We had a happy house there,
a moorland pasture, grazing land for cattle,
our happiness was suddenly cast away from us
as wind will spread the mist of the mountains.
Chorus
Turmoil of war in the land
see the ships setting sail,
hear the drum and the sound of the pipe
and see the heroes going on board
Chorus
If it is fated that I shall survive
despite the roar of the big guns
I will rest in Baile Mhonaidh
with fair Jeannie, my young maid.
Chorus

TILLIDH MI (I Will Return)
The summer of another year has come, but my sun will not rise
My feet are tired, longing for home, my mind is wandering
I am healthy, I am young but weakened and drowning without your kiss
I will not sleep until I return to my love
(Chorus)
I will return, I will return, I will not sleep until I return to my love
From time to time I go walking, by myself down the street
And I am thinking about the long river that lies far from the main road
Full to the brim with lively trout and there is a keen itch in my hands
I will not sleep until I return to my love
Chorus x2
When night falls, it is the worst time of all
I am lying in my bed, you on my mind
The summer would not be as difficult with you lying beside me
I will not sleep until I return to my love
Chorus x2

ATHCHUINGE
O King of the Elements and of that which is above,
pour down your gracious blessing.
Our land and our language prosper,
and the children of the Gaels would be under the shadow of your wing.
