I have to say that I completely disagree with the narrative that we didn't know what to do even early on. Covid-19 had been about in Italy, Singapore etc some weeks prior to reaching us. Singapore dealt with it perfectly. The arrogance of the British is that we always feel we know better

And moreover, they didn't use the months in Feb and Jan 2019 to check out their plans and check pandemic plans in any meaningful way, despite seeing what was happening in China, then Italy, then France. What a dereliction of duty. I don't think Sunak's government is any better than Johnson's, especially on a competence level.

It reflects the utter stupidity of those in power over the past 13 years that they still seem to believe that older members of the electorate will vote for them regardless of the amount of s**t they serve up to that age group. The problem is that is so true in many cases. I’m in that age group (I’ve never voted Tory) and have given up trying to get that through to my Tory friends. They just can’t see it and they’re not, in most respects, ignorant people. The best I can hope for is that they will refuse to vote at all (as some have already indicated).

They knew what Johnson was yet they voted for him because they thought he was funny. Are they still laughing now?. There is nothing funny about this either. And there is nothing funny about Johnson. And as for Mac namara she sat and lied. She wasn't at home. She was bringing in her karaoke machine to party. Yet she sat there and laughed about them complaining. What does she find so funny?.

I’m a doctor. I worked in the NHS during covid. I’m both disgusted and entirely not surprised that SOS, specifically Hancock, wanted to overrule ITU consultants as to who should “live or die”. Frankly, an NHS gardener is better suited to these decisions, but this shouldn’t surprise anyone who has been paying attention. This government has turned the NHS into a middle tier system, broken Doctor power for competing pyramids of authority that trip over each other, cut all our pay for 14 straight years and bullies us into silence. They hold professions in contempt. The system we have is broken beyond repair. It needs to go. We need PR, professionally appointed heads of offices and - in a pandemic - PhDs in charge of, you know, PhD level analysis. Hancock? Go back to the jungle.

Most ‘experts’ aren’t experts, they are academics that do what they do best, remember and recite things that previous experts have written in books. Perhaps with a bit of Latin thrown in… Their skills, and ultimately qualifications, are gauged by how well they remembered things at exam time. At best they are ‘experts once removed’, or EORs There are probably exceptions, but generally a scientist, waxing lyrical about how Space and Time works, and we look upon as the font of all knowledge, hasn’t done any of that research themselves. They are themselves EORs. Admittedly their capacity for remembering facts and figures is astounding… but essentially they are just reciting what they’ve been taught. So when presented with a new problem (Covid) EORs are completely the wrong type of people to ask, because a solution hasn’t been documented for them to remember. And thinking on their feet isn’t their main skill set. This is why politicians and EORs fall apart when something new comes along.

@gaztambo139
@gaztambo139 10 ай бұрын
@@astratan2238 Fair enough. I’m not saying people with academic skills aren’t vital in society. If I was Ill, I’d certainly be glad I could go to a GP, or be forwarded to a specialist, I wouldn’t trust my life to anyone else. However, (and there are of course exceptions), that GP or specialist probably has never spent time researching or developing drugs themselves, they are administering them based on knowledge that others have bestowed upon them. Of course there’s a lot of thought and reasoning involved in diagnosing conditions, it’s not all just about memory. And accessing a huge memory of facts and figures does help with the process of eliminating potential conditions. However, If a new virus comes to town, these same people, probably wouldn’t be the best to go to for a cure…. As they themselves would need to hear from the top scientists / experts doing the research. I think the same is the case with politicians. They may be able to recite things that happened in history, or impress us with their knowledge of Latin or Greek mythology, but that doesn’t mean they are the best people in a new dynamic situation. Stay at home… don’t stay at home… Hairdryers up the nose etc… Perhaps, if AI will eventually be smarter than the smartest people, and won’t have ego or ambition clouding their judgement, it will eventually run political departments and perhaps even countries.

This behaviour amongst politicians is nothing new. Google this Medical History paper: "Re-thinking Pandemics: State, Society, and Disease in British History, 1830-1960" by Meghan Walsh. Unfortunately, she did not discuss the Asian Flu Pandemic of 1957-58, where the Conservative PM Harold Macmillian was arguably more worried about other things: the Windscale Fire, and his conference speech. Apathy in government is not a new phenomenon. It characterized many government responses to pandemics and public health emergencies throughout history. Perhaps, this "stoicism", was based in thr cultural idea of autonomy, personal responsibility, and resilience. After all, it was only 10 years after the end of World War II with is bombing, death and destruction, which in turn was only 21 years after the end of World War I and the Soanish Flu pandemic. So at least two generations had experienced death as all too commonplace, and our leaders of that time, were less sensitive to it. But, not now. And despite the argument made that somehow we are less vulnerable now than we were then, it must be noted that that is at best an aggregate measure, and at worst a wholly untenable generalisation. We are, after repeated rounds of austerity, and the impact of Brexit, are more vulnerable and fragile to the impact of losing one's health and one's job. Why? The NHS and the rest of the Welfare State was new back then, and not quite the political punchbag it has become. And the collective foundation of society is fragmenting. There is more sigle persin households than ever before, and famillies can often provide less support, simply because it became culturally economically desireable to have small families. Hence, there is less social fabric between destitution and marginalisation than ever before. Indeed, the political capital to be gained from scapegoating the disabled, the poor, and single parents on benefits, has been so fruitful, that destitution is rising akongside as a decrease in life expectancy beyond that imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic. And the Cost if Living Crisis and Brexit has now baked in higher prices for the essentials to survival, whilst benefits continue to fall behind inflation, and real wage growth continues to stagnate across decades. So if the poor, the disabled, and the single parents feel vulberable and fragile, is because they are, and more so. And what about our Property Owning society? Well, now its there turn to feel vulnerable and more fragile. Real wage growth has been consistently surpressed, and owning a home, or having a job guarantees security. And many hardworking people are being excluded from home ownership. Only the wealthy feel secure. And it is that feeling that shaped the response to the Covid-19 crisis. It is that justified frustration, resentment, and dismay we have for the utter shambles in government. We are more vulnerable and more fragile, but it is the self-imposed damage to our people and their public services, that is multiplying the impact of external shocks that we have no immediate control over, like war, disease, and climate change. We didnt know it, but we've eroded our ability to be resilient. Not because we've been spoiled, but because we've overestmated how much we are resilient, and in what contexts. And we are discovering that the hard way.
