The song hints at his fate. The whole episode is foreshadowing obviously, but the part that goes "Is it right, or is it wrong? And is it here that I belong?" I think really gives insight into what Spike is thinking. He knows he can't change what he is, and that he's only putting off the inevitable. It's the curse of the outlaw archetype, which is the aspect of the show that really makes the Cowboy half of the title true.
