I LOVE this episode despite being so weird. Everyone's wondering why Spike's scared, and it's so simple. Cause this dude is scary. It has nothing to do with fear of dying before completing his mission or anything like that. He was completely overpowered, but by a random creature that he knew then no matter what, he couldn't fight it, couldn't kill it. This is an episode where the show is flipped on it's head, and the power of the characters are taken away. You can't shoot him, you can't punch him, you can't explode him. This wasn't a case of Spike being outclassed. This was a monster chasing him down. I love it cause it gives Spike some humanity, makes him seem more real.
@dojomojomofo2 жыл бұрын
Well said. The unknowability gives him a great deal of menace through its mystery. Another deeply unsettling adversary in anime like this would be the "Crimson Hawkmoth" in Knights of Sidonia. Elements of humanity, but ultimately unknowable and apparently totally undisturbed by battling others and dispatching them.

And this episode also make you feel sad for Perrot Le Fou. Despite being the perfect killer/ assassin that kills for the thrill and seemed unstoppable, you feel pity for what he had become. his backstory of being continuously experimented on adds to the themes and social commentary of Cowboy bebop.

The shield protecting Mad Pierrot is based on the Holtzman Shield effect from Frank Herbert's Dune saga. The concept is that any object moving over 200 miles per hour can't penetrate it, but an object moving under 200 mph can. So bullets won't effect him, but a well thrown knife can hit the mark.

"Mad" doesn't directly modify "Pierrot"-- "Le Fou" really does mean "the Mad", where "Mad" is a noun modified by the article "le/the", just like in English. If you wanted to say "The Mad Pierrot" you would say "Le Fou Pierrot", though really that word order isn't idiomatic in either language (if you take out the adjective, they both become "The Pierrot", which, again we wouldn't ordinarily say in either language).

This is my favorite episode of the show if only because it's such a drastic tonal change of pace from the rest of the series. The atmosphere in it is so eerie and strange. This intro scene does a great job of setting the mood. The color palette is grey and washed-out. There's no upbeat jazz music. The drone that starts at 1:15 is all you get as far as a "soundtrack" is concerned. It's apropos for one of the more disturbing antagonists featured on the show.

I always got the feeling Mad P. Was the only foe Spike was truly afraid of. Of the 3 (MP, Vicious, and Vincent) Mad P. Was the only one to act with true madness, he had an axe to grind sure ... but he was the only one to have basically zero regard for any living thing, including himself

@@tb90321I think he was afraid, at first. Then he responded and met mad P from his invitation. However I think compared to the other two MP had no motive to kill Spike other than he felt like it at the time. That said Vincent wasn't afraid of death but had a clear motive ... Viscious had a clear motive too. I guess I'm saying MP was scary since he was probably the only real threat that Spike could Never understand, like at all. Guy was cuckoo

Honestly, this is one of the scenes that convinced me in the storytelling powers of Anime. I mean, put these moments on a live action set and it would be talked about for decades. The shadow work as he attacks, the tight perspectives and damn...The lack of background music to instead focus on that single haunting note, becoming more and more intense along with Spike's anxiety, and finally breaking along with the possibly deadly blast...*chef's kiss*
