Really enjoyed that Dan,please ignore this photo my sons idea can't get it off I am a 62 year old male originally from N Yorkshire and tho no experience of sugar beet can remember snagging turnips and mangolds in the field by hand and could almost smell that crop being harvested and taking me back to late 60s early 70s. Thank you.

Fodder beet is the same as carrots and turnips or as you guys down in England call them swedes. I still have almost a months worth of carrots and turnips in the ground for my own consumption and by the time I have lifted all of them it should be time to prepare the soil for next year's veg crop

Hello from Denmark (where your harvester came from btw.). I was wondering how low your temps got down and how long the frost lasted. We had 3 weeks of frost and a few nights in the -15 to -18 range and I’m not sure the beet would have managed that. They will rot if they freeze in the clamp but I guess if they are still in the ground it will keep them warm enough as long as the ground doesn’t freeze.

We only went down to -5 for maybe 10 days, so nothing too extreme.

Hi Dan, interesting to harvest beets in February. Do you practice this the first year? What about weather conditions, is it safe to be able to harvest in February in your region? Farm on, Andreas
@AlextheDutchDairyfarmer3 жыл бұрын
👍👍 Have to ask a couple of questions. What soil do you have? And wouldn't you rather switch to maize? Because maize has a higher yield as beets
@CowfarmerDan3 жыл бұрын
Beet has a higher yield per acre than maize Alex. We dont have enough spare acres at the home farm to grow maize and dont want to grow it on rented land that would involve travelling on roads in potentially wet harvests.

Ditch the topper just lift them green top if using straight away cows will love them
@ipfreely100013 жыл бұрын
Feeding fresh, green tops to cows will make them shit throu the eye of a needle- fresh tops contain oxalic acid- potentially toxic if consumed in a large quantity- 2-3 days wilt and the are way less toxic. Taking the tops of means you can feed them fresh, plus the tops in the beet holding area will get contaminated with soil, more so if conditions are wet! A place I was dairy manager, we started growing fodder beet, my boss said was ok to feed them fresh- the farm had its own harvester and grew sugar beet. Arable staff left the topper at the same height and they came in with quite a bit of green tops. I vaguely remembered from my college days, you can't feed green tops. He wouldn't listen and following day cows were scouring- after a couple days there was mucus, membrane type stuff in the liquid poop. He did his "research" then,- dipshit wasn't a hands on guy, rich family- and said WE shouldn't have fed them fresh needed wilting!! Fertility took a tumble as we were autumn block calving. He made sure the arable staff altered the machine and lifted well before I was running out. (He always had to learn the hard way to find out what was right, despite paying me like 32k a year!!- guy was a pillock)

Nothing like throwing your self in at the deep end with not too helpfully conditions 🤣🤦🏻♂️. Does the beet become sweeter if the frost gets it? I know parsnips do 🤷♂️
