I was always looking for this song on their albums like “where’s Heaven and Hell??!!” It’s my favorite Who song. It hits like a bomb opening all those classic 1968-1970 concerts. Little did I know it was a John Entwhistle solo song! Not even a B-side! Crazy.

My favorite live Who song from their greatest period (1969-70)!! They opened their 1969-70 shows with this song--WOW, what a POWERHOUSE tune to start a gig!! The best live versions are the ones played at Woodstock and Tanglewood. The Woodstock version slams you like a TRUCK--it is raw, angry and LOUD!! The Tanglewood version is all of that--plus the performance is tighter and crisper. (The 1970 Tanglewood gig is IMHO the very best live Who show ever captured on film---the band was just SCORCHING that night and Keith Moon's drumming is absolutely spellbinding!!)

Agreed about Tanglewood being the best Who concert on video and your comment in general regarding filmed versions of H&H. This song should have Millions of views by now, it tells you how people today don't wanna know real music......
@MisanthropicOath10 жыл бұрын
Explain please. How many songs do The Who have? You mean to tell me, that all of the "people of today" should get a thought in their head thinking "I'd like to discover some great music from 1970 I've never heard, I think I will choose this one specific Who song I never fucking heard of"? Yes this is a great song, my favorite Who song in fact...but your logic is ridiculous. So then, what if this particular video of this particular song (a few people have this same song up on youtube) did have millions of views, but some other Who video did not? Does that mean people of today still don't want to know real music? Or is it just because millions of people didn't view this particular video of this particular song that you think the people of today don't want to hear real music? Also, would you be believing that the people of today did in fact want to hear real music if this did have millions of views?

I discovered this song as the B-Side to "Summertime Blues" when I brought the 45 in 1970 (still have it). It's just as good as the A-Side, especially the instrumentals on the bridge section. I used to play both sides full blast on our chest-sized Hi-Fi stereo when my parents weren't home.

I woke up with this song already playing in my head. Didn't remember much of the lyrics. Just was pretty shure that it's from The Who. Called my father to croak (still sleepy) the melody into the phone. Strange enough he couldn't help me along. Took me about an hour of unrest and turmoil to find the truth and see the light. Thank god I did. Entwistle, huh? That son of a bitch had some kind of humor! I've just learned that it was also he who wrote "Cousin Kevin" and "Fiddle About". Alright, I see where we're heading. The band hated the studio version of this song. This recording was actually made at the BBC studios (along with acoustic versions of "I'm Free," "Substitute," and an electric version of "Shakin' All Over"--all of which can be found on "The Who BBC Sessions" disc). This recording was actually released as the b-side of "Summertime Blues"--the Live at Leeds version. There may be another studio version of this song that was recorded a couple months later, but it has never been released. The possible alternate version was said to be recorded for consideration for the unfinished follow-up EP/LP to "Tommy" (which may have been called "Naked Eye" or "Seven Foot Car in A 6 Foot Garage") which probably would have included "Naked Eye," "Water," "Now I'm A Farmer," "Postcard," "I Don't Even Know Myself," and the unreleased "There's a Fortune in Those Hills."

Actually, Who's Missing was a compilation of songs that hadn't been on any of their regular albums. Some of them were previously unreleased, but some of them were only released on singles. Heaven And Hell was, I believe, the B-side of Summertime Blues.
@richardallen33606 жыл бұрын
Just to be specific, one song "Shout and Shimmy" did appear on the first UK LP "My Generation". It was replaced by "Instant Party" (aka "Circles") on the US version. Referring to the cd cover insert, "All selections previously unreleased on an American L.P." - 3 songs are "Unreleased Anywhere", 3 songs are "Unreleased in U.S.A.", and 6 songs are the "B-side of U.S.A. Single". Please note: 2 songs, "I'm a Boy" and "Mary-Anne with the Shaky Hands" appeared on the "Meaty, Beaty, Big and Bouncy" hits LP and "Happy Jack/A Quick One" LP respectively, but the U.S. single/45 rpm versions on "Who's Missing" are listed as the "Original Version". Perhaps a different mix than the UK single/45 release. I also have the "Two's Missing" CD. It has more unreleased songs and US and UK B-sides, and the UK only single "The Last Time"/"Under My Thumb" (yes, those Stones songs). Unfortunately, the cd cover insert doesn't identify which are unreleased or B-sides. I bought both CD's when new - "Who's Missing" (1985) and "Two's Missing (1987).
@richardallen33606 жыл бұрын
One more note: Both Cd's were not re-mastered, so the sound quality varies. The songs from 1969 onwards sound excellent as The Who had better recording equipment to utilize. Sorry, but I'm never selling my CD's.
@richardallen33606 жыл бұрын
Need to correct my comment. "I'm a Man", included on "Who's Missing", is the only song from the compilation that originally appeared on a regular LP. It was on the UK LP "My Generation", but was replaced on the US LP "The Who Sings My Generation" with "Instant Party (Circles)". I read that the Who's version of "I'm a Man" was deemed offensive by the US censors, which explains why it was deleted.

It's mostly G minor pentatonic, but he's adding quite a bit of extra notes for chromatic runs (for example, a F# to transition between an F and a G), which is a very common blues & rock thing. He's also obviously throwing in some Eb (which isn't normally part of G pentatonic), since the second chord of the progression is Eb major.
