You are spot on with the floodiing. The more you build with roads, concrete, etc, the less area there is for rain to soak in. Also very little maintenance is done to keep drains, culverts, streams, rivers free of debris. We have the same issues over here in nz. Thanks for all the updates.

Great video George, I have said this before and I will say it again, councils and environment agencies need to get their act together and start clearing drains and ditches. Agree with your comments regarding new houses causing flooding, but do feel that zero / min till doesnt help either. Where I am, we had flooding early this year for the first time due to run off from the fields. Large areas ( mainly headlands ) produced nothing to harvest due to the land not being moved for several years. Noticed since harvest, these fields have been subsoiled and ploughed properly for the first time in ages. Will be interesting to see what happens if we get another wet winter. The FW will out live us all.

In the Netherlands there are rules if you build anything or harden a surface you have to compensate waterstorage in your direct area. With a formula and all. And everybody has to follow em. Even the municipalities.. 😅
@GeorgeSaunders3 ай бұрын
What type of water storage has to be installed?
@mrvanahead3 ай бұрын
@@GeorgeSaunders well, depends on the development. But new build housing area's all have wadi's (lowered area where the water naturally flows to and than infiltrates or slowly gets to flow away to (widened) ditches (which are already common in the Netherlands. But when we build our latest shed of 1600m2 floorspace, we had to widen a ditch by a meter on the topside over a length of 300meters. Don't know the exact formulas and requirements. But as we have a system of ditches in place here, it has to be somesort of buffer for that, to make sure they won't overflow. Butt even then there can be floodings but it's mostly in the concreted area's then. A bit hard to explain i guess 😀

So true George. Got a new estate going up in our village that has been built on meadows that flood, which no doubt keeps flooding at bay from roads and houses/buildings around the area. Be interesting to see what happens when we do get loads of rain. 🤦🏻♂️

George might have to be on the look out for an Alvis Stalwart or Hagglunds amphibious vehicle if the rain keeps going. The UK looks like it could do with something like the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for some flood control projects. A quick look for possible flood management would suggest some 'flood bays/ storage/ sediment settling basin, south of Ely then pumped in a pipe south of Stowmarket. (30 miles). I would expect some new UK videos of vehicles being driven through deep water/ fords by numpties soon.

Dundee City Council knocked down a school because of flooding causing subsidence. They are now building a brand new school at great expense, on the same piece of land. Ok, I know building methods etc have changed since the 1960s, . but hey-ho. When there is heavy rain the park opposite the school site floods so you can only see the top two feet or so of the goal posts and the locals get their jet skis out! I agree with what another comment made about min/no till, and lack of deep ploughing. It's not as common where I live but I saw lower lying fields earlier in the year that took months to dry not long after winter barley/wheat were sown, so many bare patches. My grandfather told me that he spent almost a whole winter clearing out old clay drains and ditches. Don't see so much of that nowadays. Apologies for waffling on, take care!

Its a sod to lose the last of the easy days of Autumn, with your flooding, no more grazing on that land this yr...Summer floods are always worse as the vegetation holds up water worse than later ones, plus you lose grass to summer flooding, it dies off badly, especially if you get sun on the water...It is what it is, great mindset....

Agree with you George, been saying it for a long time, I really can't see the modern tractors still running like your FW or other old stuff . Strikes me the slightest fault on modern gear and they grind to a halt or limp mode which becomes a main stealer issue. More roads as well as 100s of 1000s of new build houses going up often in areas vulnerable to flooding so all that water gets concentrated and causes more floods, minimum till can't be helping either with a lot of run off in no time these days, notice a lot of sunsoiling and ploughing going on this season. Don't care what many say but you will never beat the plough instead of scratching the soil around.
