Coyote attacks unleashed pet dog

Action starts at 45 seconds. I encountered this coyote sunning in a field at a very public Park in Dallas (Harry Moss). Lots of dog walkers. Many unleashed. Coyote show his self-confidence when an unleashed pet moves in on his space. Turned out coy had an injured front paw.

Body stretched out and relaxed to be able to make quick movements. Trying to scare the "prey" into running as that is when coyotes (and wolves) attack.

Any coyote trying for a dog twice its size is either rabid, starving to death, or extremely young and inexperienced.

Or it was being a very smart animal and luring his prey to the rest of his pack. Coyote's are smart and dangerous. They should absolutely not be taken as something that is sacred or should be left alone. They're a danger to livestock, deer (which are endangered as it is), domestic dogs and cats and sometimes even small children.

Sonny Galindo well no and yes. That is just a regular adult Eastern Coyote, but Eastern (Grey) Coyotes all have a good amount of wolf left in their dna, much more than normal Western Coyotes. They shouldn’t even really be considered Coyotes because they are typically double the size of your stereotypical Western Coyote. The East has fox which are the same size as Western Coyotes. Luckily we don’t have cougars though

:D Good question! It was a Canon HG10 that was 1440x1080 with assymetrical pixels, so it fills a 1080 window. Also used a Canon 1.8x extender lens. Thought it was high tech at the time :-)

Yotes do this often when being aggressive or scared(many ppl seem to be misunderstanding the close connection between fear/aggression). Head low, teeth bared, back arched, rocking their head from side to side. Behavior of Coyotes, Wolves, & domesticated Dogs are radically different in many ways. Teresa Gallagher Please explain to me the difference between an aggressive coyote posture, a defensive coyote posture, and an attack posture. I'll give you a hint. the last two don't exist. That coyote didn't seem particularly threatened by the dog. The interaction was formal, and it was clearly the coyotes game. The dog just wanted to have a butt sniff and the coyote said no. Also, while the submissive posture may look similar, it's accompanied by retreat, not advance and a threat gape. And I don't think it's mange. Full hair on the tail and back legs, and that's the first noticeable sign we would see. So the only way you would be able to determine mange on this particular coyote would by checking it's belly between it's back legs to see if it's pink and raw.

Let's be clear. The coyote did not attack the dog. The owner, who can be heard trying to recall his dog, did not have control and the dog invaded the coyote, did not want a fight and did not look well but was defending itself. Humans have encroached on so many wild animal's habitats, act like fools--letting their cats roam in areas where coyotes are know to be and then whine and complain and want to shoot the wild animals for killing their pets. I have two large dogs and a cat, so I understand both sides. The wildlife needs a place, too. Take the precautions to protect your pets, accordingly.

The coyote doesn't comprehend the difference between a pet and any other prey. To them, it is just what they need to survive another day. Baloney. The dog did not attack the coyote. Clearly, it was just curious. The coyote charged the dog. People should not let their dogs off leash in the park. Also, there is no place for a coyote in a park where people and dogs are walking. An injured coyote is dangerous. Animal Control should retrieve it and put it down before it attacks a child. Coyotes in urban areas will escalate their aggression as their numbers increase and their fear decreases. It's so predictable scientists have even drawn up a table of the escalating steps. Nick Mirro I know exactly what you mean.. Being a KZbin creator, I know exactly how much power a thumbnail/title combo can have, so I understand completely where you are coming from; it's very frustrating to have a great video but nobody watches it because you aren't using clickbait. People don't really care much about the video though if they aren't getting what they are expecting. I too have had videos stagnant for 2 years, then changed the title and thumbnail and all of a sudden BOOM! Your thumbnail is just fine, perfect actually.. It's an actual clip of the video and it's the best possible thumbnail you can get without making a fake one (which would make more people mad). You can change the title to something like "Coyote vs Pet Dog CLOSE CALL (NEARLY Attacked!)" The capitalized words do help draw attention in videos like this, and I think people would still watch a video where someone is in danger - a lot of people just like to get scared, they don't want to see an animal rip a part another animal. I've seen many extremely violent animals attack videos on KZbin, and they all have thumbs down just because of how graphic they are. Your video is something rare; it's like that video of that Bald Eagle that landed on that ladies porch just 5 feet away. Just personally, I like seeing animals in their natural environment. When I clicked your video, I wasn't expecting the coyote to rip the dogs leg off (nor did I want to see that), but I was expecting them to maybe stand on their hind legs and wrestle a little bit - to me, a nip at the leg was hardly an attack, even though it does fit the definition. I'm just rambling now - overall I loved the video, just felt a little mislead. Not saying you have to change your title either, just food for thought. The title might bring in more views, but it brings in negative views, which has adverse effects on your channel if you are trying to build. I have live in Tyler Texas and have seen coyotes on the outskirts of the city patiently waiting beside highway 64 to cross. and in my own neighborhood I saw three one night coming home from work playing in the street. There are reports of people losing small dogs out of fenced backyards to the coyotes who jump over the fence with the pets in their mouth.

In my area coyotes are a threat to pets and young livestock. I never saw coyotes or raccoons here when I was a kid. Now they are everywhere. ***** Hey Cody. There are signs everywhere saying dogs must be on leashes. We have official dog parks in Dallas and this isn't one. It is called Harry Moss "native area." There is a large native prairie and woodland hiking trails. Its a large park (~200 acres) but with nearby residents disregarding the ordinances, letting their dogs run loose, kids, bikers and naturalists avoid the place. To me the coyote was afraid (because of injury), the turn tucked tail, the flashing of the teeth was a warning but the dog sauntered in and the coyote moved away, the dog was probably oblivious to the coyote as danger. Coyote was in survival mode, I could tell something was wrong with it almost immediately. Coyote could not run away due to paw. Still interesting to see the coyote react that way, great body language.

The coyote might not have had a hurt paw. He seemed to be walking fine on it. He may have been playing hurt to bolster the dog's confidence and lure him closer for a sneak attack. I've heard of packs of coyotes which hide in the bushes on the outskirts of L.A., they send their smallest member out to lure large stray dogs back into the bushes where they gang up and eat him. There is nothing good about having a coyote around! Buddies dog was outside Chesapeake male, pack of yotes came in and killed the 95 lb male. I say shoot as many as you can because you’ll never kill all of them. Also most states have open season year round on them.

@@briand7868 I live out in the country in Kansas and I know the general area of a pack of 20 yotes about a mile away (My dog & I ran into them in the forest around 4:50am 2 years ago watching the sun come up) however it still baffles me when people at night will leave their dog in the backyard hours on end. One of the saddest things I saw was coyote once. It had been daylight for about two hours when I was driving to town and I seen a coyote that was dead along the road. Then about 3/4 of a mile later I seen another one in a panic state. It was quite obvious it was searching. It wasn't even caring about traffic. It would just stand in the the middle of the road looking and start running along the road some more.

The coyote is injured or has arthritis and it thinks the approaching dog has come to test it's health status. The coyote thinks it has to get up and show the dog that it's still able to fight and move around/flee. The coyote doesn't know that the dog is well fed and just looking to socialize out of curiosity. The coyote thinks the dog is looking for an easy meal, or trying to wear it down. If the dog wanted to kill the coyote as safely as possible it would try to circle behind the coyote and bite it's anus and testicles over and over again until the coyotes insides spilled out of it's backside. That is how dogs/wolves kill bigger prey to maximize safety. A true predator doesn't want it's face bitten by it's prey. The coyote thinks this dog is a predator hunting it. You see the coyote try to move away from the dog and protect it's anus from a rear attack by tucking it's tail, and raising it's back to look bigger. The coyote senses the dog has moved in closer and falsely thinks the dog is about to try and rear attack. Although the coyote has protected it's anus, it's back leg tendons would be the secondary target. It can't lose those tendons and escape. It panics and wheels around to try an attack of it's own. The dog isn't interested in getting bitten and gives the coyote more space. The coyote is under tremendous stress and just wants to get as far away from the dog as possible. The coyote is not submitting and would bite the crap out of that dog if it got close enough. Biting is not submission. The tail tuck in this case is to defend the anus from a rear attack.

Speaking as someone who was a biologist for several years working with both Red Wolves and Coyotes, you should do a little research into Coyote body language. Then you would understand what's happening a lot better. You could tell the Coyote was injured AND pretty old within the first 5 seconds of the video.

@@NickMirro Yes. The body language of the coyote are submissive gestures... The coyote was old to begin with, plus being injured. The dogs.....not understanding the submissive gestures reacted as you saw. So.....this definitely was not a case of a coyote attacking pet dogs. Although.....that does happen. Coyotes look at small breed dogs and puppies as a food source. In my neighborhood just last summer a pack of three coyotes took a Jack Russel Terrier that was being walked on a leash by a retired couple. We have examples of alligators getting dogs, hawks and eagles taking dogs, and coyotes taking dogs. But this is not the case here. Thank you for posting though!!! I hope I wasn't too harsh in my criticism........I actually enjoyed watching the video!

Yeah, but sometimes it's for the dogs protection, so they don't run off and get hurt. If the area was fenced it would be a bit safer for the dog to just roam. I just know how dumb people in the cities can be and let their dogs off the leash outside in an unfenced area and then get surprised they ran away, got run over, or hurt someone. Neither of them was visiblely injured in thier clash. Other than the Coyote who demonstrated his right front paw was possible injured prior to the pet dogs encounter. I had two cats that disappeared which we think coyotes got. But the fact of the matter is, coyotes were here before cats and people, and it's us humans who have encroached on the coyote's natural habitant. You can't blame the coyotes for preying on cats because small animals are their natural prey. It's best to bring your cats in before dusk, and keep them in until mid morning.

You think. I live in as area where we see coyotes , and hear them. My cat, that I don't leave out. Outdoor cats are hit by cars and killed by dogs. She was missing for 2 months, and our animal control called me that she had a frightened cat that had been hit by a cat,( she only had a road burn). She was fine. My other neighbor lets her white cat out, and he disappears for weeks. It's sad that coyotes get blamed. They may kill cats on rare occasions, but little dogs are the only pets at risk. Little dogs can dig under fences, get hit by cars, are targeted by birds of prey and other dogs. Leave wildlife be. We are such a destructive species that they barely have a chance, and peoples stupid phobias are destroying innocents.

Awesome video! I've never seen such submissive posture before...nice little bump to warn the dog off and no harm done. Poor thing with the hurt paw :( I'm glad to see coyotes in my area...we were overwhelmed with small critters such as rabbits and groundhogs. Then they finally moved in and little critter population is way down again! Yay! Still waiting on the wolves but I think our area is too urban.

The limping is a fake injury that most coyotes use to lure other predators close to where the pack is laying in wait to attack the unsuspecting. The fact that these animals use such a technique is very impressive to say the least . I have watched this on several occasions with pet dogs as well as other wild life

Milspecmachine I was going to say the same thing about the limp. even our dogs will hitch up like that on occasion. Interesting to see people who have no fieldcraft speaking out on this. We have a bunch of Coyote/mountain lion here in hills of Woodside California. Coyotes are effed up animals they'll trick and and even "befriend" dogs and "con" them into coming out of the yard so they can eat em. They'll attack dogs on leashes if they think they can get away with it as well. They do keep the deer population down a bit but they are a bit out of control now because the liberals won't allow hunting up here. I guess they'd rather have deer, coyote mountain lions die of disease, inbreeding and getting hammered by cars and motorcycles. People who don't understand wild life except to think it is cute and pretty tend to do a bunch more harm than good. Kind of sad to see deer with deformities living longer than they normally would or coyote getting tagged by a car, injured and unable to hunt who then comes around homes hurting pets. all could be fix with proper control and balance.

Marie Peterson Marie... They are very small animals. A average human male should EASILY be able to take on a coyote. We don't have claws or insane strength, but I know for a fact I could crush a coyotes legs or neck. And how is it supposed to jump six feet in the air and get my neck? this coyote was not hurt. that is how they bait other dogs into fighting. they will act injured, then once the dog attacks the "injured" coyote, another group of coyotes will kill the dog. you can see the coyote walk just fine when it finds out that the dog doesn't follow it or attack

Great Video check out the behavior at first its tail was severely tucked between its legs but then when it had to defend itself its tail came out to a more dominant position. It first tried to show that it did not want to fight but then when it had to its tail came out to be more dominant like ok let's fight.

@@BigShaneGillis Since it's in Texas, it's definitely not an Eastern Coyote (Canis latrans var.). It's also probably not a red wolf, although they _were_ native to Texas they're only found in captivity within Texas at the time the video was uploaded. It's probably not a Mexican wolf, there's only ~250 of them in the US, in the wild. Texas Parks and Wildlife notes that wolves are currently extirpated from Texas, so I wouldn't expect a recent wolf x coyote hybrid. I would anticipate that it's a Plains Coyote (C. l. latrans) or Southeastern Coyote (C. l. frustor.) given that they're two of the larger subspecies of coyotes and are found in Texas currently. There's a similarly named Texas Plains Coyote, but they're smaller than the Plains Coyote.

I hope other people noticed, that coyote was faking an injured leg! :) Possibly to lure a weaker dog to try to attack only to surprise the dog and attack back. Normally, the tactic of a lone coyote will be to lure a domestic dog to chase him. And often, the happy-go-lucky domestic dog will chase the lone coyote right into the pack of coyote who will then out-number the domestic dog and absolutely murder it. I instantly thought rabies, there's no doubting it. I'm amazed that of all the KZbin animal experts, you seem to be the only one who said so. Well done! I'll bet some rabid animal attacked and bit the paw/leg, so there's transfer point and reason for limping. The jaw action is a clear sign that hydrophobia (rabies in its advanced stages makes drinking impossible and death comes from either organ failure or dehydration) has taken over and death is unstoppable at that stage, less than 48 hours. It's an horrifically painful ending.

I had a German Shepherd that had gigatism or something, was over 100 lbs and the size of a wolf. No one could believe it when they saw him, especially cops who always wanted to know what breeder I'd gotten him from. A group of coyotes tried to start some shit when we were out hiking once and that dog turned them into a pack of bitches. I almost broke my ankle chasing him because he got off the leash and tried to run one of them down.
