I was at a brake check outside Kelowna BC when this coyote came up real close. Some other trucker fed him a sandwich and then I went on my way.

We get this alot where I live. Lots of coyotes and coyote pups come down from the hills and wander in our sub community. What I love is when I leave for work around 5am...the beuatiful yelps and cries these animals make. Yeah..they are beautifil animals ...they also keep the squirrels and rodent problem at bay.

You are right. Unfortunately this coyote has a story. When it was just born its mother left it and it was not accepted into any pack. It started hanging out around the brake check scared to wonder far from its birth place. The truckers realized it was going to die without help. So we all started feeding it. This lasted for a long time before it was finally taken to an animal shelter where it is still being taken care of to this day.

He's clearly seen the various ingredients before, either in isolation from scavenging or from another sandwich. he can tell if they are food by smell and taste. When he gets it he pulls it away (if several were scavenging a carcass they would do this to ensure another doesn't try to grab it) then he tests it with a sniff / lick, then he eats it.

This guy reminds me of the foxes on San Juan Island. People like to lure them closer with food, so they get used to it. You can tell that coyote is still wary, though. A lot warier than the foxes I saw. He was willing to come forward for the food, but he kept his distance and kept twitching and looking around. My guess is one false move would have had him out of there in a flash.

Can't you see it flinches everytime it hears a car, and how alert it is? I don't think one sandwich will condition it against it's instincts.

I don't remember this, but my mom said when I and my siblings were little. We kept talking about how we and the other kids from the neighborhood were feeding this dog when we got off the bus. So my mom drove over to check one time, and the dog was really a coyote that would sit and wait for us to get off the bus cause we would feed him. LOL! I imagine she told us to stop after that, like I said I don't remember.

This happened in the far northern suburbs of Dallas. I think the coyote was a rogue and started coming to people because it was sick and couldn't hunt for itself anymore. That's my theory, anyway, because they are normally afraid of people like you said. It's not like they invaded the neighborhood. Human beings invaded their neighborhood. The whole area is prairie land that got built up with suburban sprawl. It was and still is their natural habitat.

speachless... If not for the title, I could have sworn this was a dingo. A bit fat for a desert dingo, but the size, markings and "manor" were so dingo like. I've seen other vids here where the coyotes were tan/brown, like some dingos. If you are wondering why I'm so surprised, look at my canine adventure videos, my dogs have a "bit" of dingo in them + malamute. :-) Great video!

What a handsome animal - as pretty as anything the AKC offers! I'd love to see a tame coyote run the agility course. They'd be naturals. I have had pet coyotes growing up, and as long as you allow for their skittish spooky nature, they work out fine. Mine loved to untie shoelaces of all visitors.

I hunt coyotes, they are a superb adversary in the off season. If they left my chickens, geese, and cattle alone, I might not feel the same way. Having an animal trophy is nothing like an inflatable doll. One can purchase a doll at the local pervert shop. To get an animal trophy is something that is earned through patience, diligence, scouting, and being in sync with mother earth.

@wowokl0l I agree with you on never feed wild animals. But coyotes are actually completely safe to be around when they are alone as long as you don't annoy them. We had a coyote run around our town and when I ran into it by the woods, I walked right past it and it walked right past me. I told my zoology teacher and she said they only ever hunt in packs. If it is alone, it is either lost or wandering.

Let me just clear something up. A typical coyote in the wild would not go anywhere near humans. This is a Coyote that lives near a highway rest stop. He is used to being fed by humans. I have seen tame Coyotes before. This doesn't mean he has rabies. People are stupid. Any animal could have rabies, skittish or not.

Exactly - you said it yourself. 'Cause you didnt feed them' - not every human is going to have food to give a coyote, and its when the coyote doesn't get food that he'll become agressive. You'll have to keep feeding him now because he expects it.

I'm sure you probably meant well, but we should generally not feed wild animals directly like this. When a coyote takes food like this that is given to him straight from a person's hand, it puts the coyote at risk of identifying people/ trucks/ roads with food. In this manner a wild animal can become habituated, and often governing agencies have to euthanize them. The whole thing just gets worse and worse unfortunately.

We'll find a bunch of fur torn up all around the yard (a coyote or something has killed the mother) then we usually find the nest around our garden. we've tried raising wild bunnies a few times and they just die, its weird, we've even taken them to the vet to get raised and for some reason, wild rabbits just die if they arent in the wild.

@SirVladHarkonen Coyotes are far more exposed to human civilization than your typical woods animal. Coyotes can be heard howling at night where I live and occasionally seen running through the mobile home park I live in. Coyotes eat to survive like any other wild animal--to think that their bodies have not adapted after eons of digging through trash cans on rural property as part of finding food is a severe misconception. These guys aren't assholes--they were being kind.

Pro tip..if you are feeding a 'starving' coyote...its probably sick and about to die anyways. Healthy coyotes don't starve, they are one of the most resilient and adaptable predators that exists. Just because they eat your food doesn't mean they are starving...of course they are going to take a free meal. That's like someone coming up to you and giving you money with no catch, of course you're going to take it.

I agree with most people on this post, feeding wildlife is not doing them any favors in the long run. You ever hear the old saying "give a man a fish, he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish he'll never be hungry again?" Same concept applies here, this coyote has become dependent upon man for his food and is not keeping his natural survival skills up to par. Animals are just as lazy as humans, if there's an easier way to get something we will do it, but in the long run it costs us.
