We've been training our Giant Schnauzer, Salem, for the past 2 years to protect the farm, but today our strategy needs to change. 🤔
Hi there! 👋🏻 We live on a 1-acre farm right in the middle of the busy city of Phoenix, Arizona! Our names are Kevin & DaNelle, and we moved here in 2009, when our kids Ethan & Lydia were just 6 & 4 years old 🥰 Over the years we've raised goats for milk, chickens for eggs, built a fish/swim pond, planted fruit & nut trees, and grew a large garden full of veggies. We've also raised a bunch of other animals like pigs, sheep, turkeys, geese, peacocks, and more!
Now that our kids are away at college, we have settled into doing what we love most -- which is raising & breeding goats ethically to improve genetics. But don't worry, we'll forever love our goofy pet goats like Luna the herd queen & Willow the stump lover. We also still love raising chickens for eggs, gardening, tending to the fruit & nut trees, and growing fish in the pond. We use the fresh goat's milk to make cheese, butter, yogurt -- and we use that + everything else we harvest on our little farm to make delicious meals. Having a getaway from the busy world right in our backyard brings so much joy to us each day, and we hope it brings some to you, too. 🥰

That’s actually an amazing option for them. I don’t know if the neighbors would be so happy about the installation of it. Unfortunately in my area, some packs found a way over a double angled chain-link fence of a school yard, and manage to climb over every night for the garbage, But they also found out to go through peoples windows and doggy doors to grab peoples small dogs and cats. Which is the saddest thing to happen in my area. The coyotes out here are just becoming smarter and have zero fear of humans. It’s intense.

i’m a graduate student at ttu for wildlife biology. it is gonna be near impossible to completely prevent them from coming in your backyard. i would say the best bet is to get a second dog for more cover and coyote guards. any preventative measures such as repellants, alarms, and urine will eventually lead to de-sensitization and they will ignore it. However you could use these leisurely until a decision is made. Fencing is also a great option but is quite expensive. One measure we learned is the use of a King Collar to protect livestock against coyotes, but I don’t think they make something similar for dogs. Coyotes suffocate by the jugular rather than tear skin, so if your dealing with a pack, it’s a difficult decision.

@@Tzarina8472 that’s initially what i thought, but they’re typically sized for smaller dogs that fall easier prey to raptors and other hunters. even if Salem wears this armor, my concern would be her mobility through the farm and if she got snagged on something. From my experiences of watching coyote packs in the years, two big dogs should be the best bet for them in terms of protection of their livestock and their land from coyote packs. I’m a novice but watched a 6 pack of them in my area and they are bold and unafraid of humans coming right up at me to sniff the garbage around the area. Coyotes here in my area are becoming brave and going into peoples houses through open windows and dog doors to take small dogs and cats from the homes. So that’s disheartening to learn about. Pee is a great tool here though and they avoid my yard thanks to lots of dog pee. And I agree that pee can help a bit unless they become desensitized, but for now it should work for them until they are able to find another trained dog or a solution to the problem. Hoping nothing happens till then. I’m a bit of a night owl and walk outside at night in the city, coyotes are just becoming more and more fearless it seems.

Dog Armor Get or make a collar for Salem that is basically a wide leather strap with all kinds of long, thin, nails sticking out. It makes it difficult and sometimes painful for the predator to get a kill-hold on your dog; which is when they grab the neck and shake.
@SaberFangs
@SaberFangs Жыл бұрын
Have you considered reaching out to local groomers and asking for a bag of fur? Sprinkle that along the edges of your property every now and then. It's not a long term solution but doing that can trick some predators to stay away as the combined scent of many dogs can trick them into thinking this area is the territory of a larger pack. Since you have an immediate danger of a pack of coyotes in the area, it would be best to do this and anything else you can implement immediately while you consider long term solutions. For long term I 100% agree with others saying you at least need to consider getting another dog.

I (not very experienced with coyotes) might recommend getting 2 alpacas for the main pasture and then installing either rollers or electric fencing (I’d go with electric) around the buck and baby pens. Keeping Salem outside will alert you, then she’ll also have the alpacas to help protect the main pasture and the goats in the small pens will be protected by fencing. I hope the coyotes don’t come for you or your neighbour’s animals and I wish all the best to the dog that was attacked.

A multi pronged approach sounds like the best option. Get another dog, protect their necks with a specialised collar, install the rollers on your fence, trim back some of the shrubbery over the back wall, get motion detection deterrent in the likely high risk access points. Your goats and other animals are family, but also an investment. The extra costs to protect them would be worth it. 😊

I was thinking that too, a combo. Or if all else fails, Karen could pitch in! :)

The problem is, they can jump over the rollers and not touch them. Heavier dogs that barely scale a fence will encounter the rollers, but I'm afraid coyotes just sail over the fence. I've been around them for years and they're hard to battle when you can't hunt them.

Hello, I grew up in Mesa and had a small farm in Lehi. I undertand what you are going through. IMO a hot wire is the cheapest & quickest way to protect your babies. Honestly, not to scare you but a pack of coyotes could take down a small goat. This is very serious ...Cut back the bushes and trees overhanging the cinder block fence, its a alot of work, but you all will have a huge deterrant with a hot line running the top of your fence. You'll be able to sleep at night. One other deterrant is Mountain lion or Bobcat urine, and motion detection lightening on back fence. Also I know the have motion detectoion triggering sounds of barking dog or hissing growl of large predator like mountain lion cat? Set it up on access points or fences? Hope this helps, will be praying for the safety of you lil ones.

Yes this! Great ideas to keep coyotes out. LGD only work if they are outside 100% of the time. Since Salem is more family pet and watchdog with livestock duties, she's not going to be as effective as hot wire. There is also a motion detected water jet sprayer out there that can be set up. - Havahart 5277 Critter Ridder Motion Activated Animal Repellent and Sprinkler - This is a great deterant to coyotes and other predators, but if a neighborhood cat or one of your own animals trigger it, it's not lethal.

Suggestion: Add a panel atop the outer fence that curves in and then out, like a backward C. Because it curves back on itself, coyotes won't be able to climb over it; because it is in addition to the fence already there, it should be too high for them to jump over. In the areas where there are trees or other things growing over the fence, put planks that extend beyond the branches (or whatever) - like a pergola roof lattice? - and then mount the backward curve on those extensions, so coyotes that climb the trees are still faced with the backward curve.. The curving panels can be anything that coyote paws or teeth can't get a grip on: sturdy chicken wire, fence panels bent over a form, even cloth that holds a shape and doesn't rip. (I don't know what this would cost. Probably a lot.)

Can you make the enclosures you put your animals into at night more secure with the rollers instead of the whole yard? I saw another story recently where a LGD (or might have been a Merema) got really torn up by a pack of coyotes, I wouldn't risk Salem or a potential second dog getting injured in that situation. She can still bark to alert you if something comes into the yard but I think just reinforcing the goat and chicken pens would probably be the lowest risk.

For Willow: Use Quick Set Cement to make a Fake Stump. To do it, just dig out a spot in a large bucket or the ground in the shape and depth you want. ( Use Wet Course Sand to shape it or use a Real stump and pack the sand around it, then remove it carefully ) Pour the cement into the mold, making sure you add wire or pieces of fence off cuts for strength, then leave it to cure. Once cured, dig out and clean the fake stump off. ( You can use a scrub brush to get any stubborn sand off ). Then Place it where you want it. You can also paint it if you want. It will never decay and Willow will always have her Stump.

We had wolves and coyotes, our dogs all wore chains on their necks to protect their most vulnerable area. We lived by the ocean and lots of forest. This works at night and they didn't have to wear them in the daytime. Worked great. It is very intimitating when the coyotes would sit on the banks and watch us.

We are deep in bear and coyote country and we use elertric net fences. Something does test it once in a while but 8 years into keeping goats never have we had anything get through a hot fence... the key is keeping it hot....

Oh no, so sorry to hear that. Do you know how many of them attacked the dog? I would get 2 more Salems 😀 and make sure all your live stock are securely indoors at night, and electric barbed wire wall barriers? The wall barriers will be expensive but you have to weigh up cost vs security. Hope all your animals stay safe x

I'd say Kevin is very create and competent. Cut back the outer perimeter trees. Install long spikes that lean in all directions somehow along the top of your entire perimeter fence. Definitely get a 2nd dog (and maybe 3rd dog) so they can be pack. It may be costly but worth the investment.

A second dog is probably the best bet. They can back each other up and present a more confused target for coyote packs. I suggest a Heeler - the Australian Cattle Dog. They can handle Arizona temperatures, they're incredibly sweet, fast and nimble.

Predator eyes are solar and you attach them to fence at coyote eye height. Theve worked well for us. Lost 4 goats in one night to coyotes and we use those and have an LGD now. No sign of them for 2 years now.

I think getting another dog is the best bet and when you train the new dog at least it will have the advantage of learning from Salem too. It can see what she does and hopefully pick things up faster. Also depending on the location of the dog that was attacked it's possible that a pack can't get into your yard all at once so Salem wouldn't have to worry about taking on more than one coyote at a time. It looks to me like it would be a bit of a challenge for the coyotes to get into your yard so I don't think it's likely that more than one would be in your yard at a time if Salem is constantly on watch for intruders. I think that the most likely scenario for her getting attacked would be when you let her out after not being in the yard for a while and the coyotes are already in the yard. If she's always outside then she would catch the first coyote before the others come in.

You can get another Giant Schnauzer it should lean alot of the training routine by watching Salem. But I would get one Llama and still have Salem out there at night. They can back each other up. Plus Salem can still get into the tight places the Llama couldn't. Remember only one Llama any more and they won't protect the other animals. Because a single Llama will see the other animals as its pack

As far as fencing, would something cheaper like barbed wire where there are trees to kind of hide the look of it be an option? You ultimately want to keep them from wanting to try once torn up a bit. A lot of homesteaders use fairly cheap electric wire fences that are easy to turn off or on when needed if they keep a bull in a pasture might work. Of course, another beautiful dog and playmate for more of a pack feel would be good too. Best of luck! Scary knowing they are just lurking!

I have a Pyrenees cross guardian,and he could take 1 or 2, but a couple months back, someone dumped a hound and a hound cross on our street and I ended up with them. The mix isn't a good bird guardian (I have a poultry farm) but strangely the long legged beagle is great with them, so I decided to keep her to back Sebby up. Phoebe already mixed it up with coyotes when she was still running loose, so I know she will take them on to protect the birds, and Seb needs backup in case of a pack situation.

I live in under an acre with 2 goats and chickens. We rescued a Great Pyrenees that was about a year old. He doesn’t bark any more than my neighbors dog. When he first came if he barked I would go out and check out the situation and reward him and say quiet if all was ok. He doesn’t stay out all night yet, as he is too young still. We have coyotes that run the power lines and scream, it’s so scary sounding. So far they haven’t came into our fences. Good luck!

Coyotes are scaredy cats, but I agree your land is too small for an LGD especially with Salem and Minnie there as well. I'd do a hot wire around the perimeter and station Salem outside. Then you at least have a warning and can shoot on sight.

My first thought was electric fencing. Another thing you could try is motion sensor lights or noise makers since coyotes don’t like either. The noise might not be good if you have neighbors. I’d try lights first, making sure they don’t shine at neighbors.

My vote is to try the rollers first A cayote might be able to still get over the fence with the trees and other structures, but it's less likely that more than one would get over much leass or an enties pack. It gives Salem a better chance on her own if you dont want to get another dog. However if you do decide to get a second dog, I think it only better's your chances against them.

What about setting up a electric mesh fence that you can take down when you flood irrigate, but leave up the rest of the time? Coyotes would come over the fence by the rail road tracks but run into the electric fence when they come over the irrigation ditch.

We have a lot of coyotes here too, I ended up buying LGDs to protect the animals, but the goats and birds also sleep in locked barns/coops. If you decide to try an LGD, I recommend a maremma, (though they do shed, so not allergy friendly) I have two on an acre and a half, and once the 10 acre property is ready, I’ll likely retain one from one of our litters. The maremmas don’t have the tendency to roam and they bark less than Pyrenees and Anatolians from what I’ve seen, but they do still bark. Another possibility is putting a hot wire around the baby goat and buck yards so you have some protection there, and if you have a friend nearby with a working LGD, maybe have them come by and mark around the property.
