I heard the statement: If it walks like a duck, If it quacks like duck, It must be a duck! So if a Morgan allows Gennie the cat to climb on him; If Morgan really felt so badly about Lil' Barn Cat after being hurt that he spent +$10,000 to ensure she lived and then brought her indoors; If Morgan is so lost after Molly Murder Mittens disappeared; and If Morgan so looks forward to meeting Pablo Barn Cat, then one just might conclude Morgan IS TURNING INTO A CAT PERSON (long ago he was a dog person- the two are not mutually exclusive).

@barbarahouk1983 moreover when he got Toby and before that ha spent time talking about the beagle he had as a child that he [as a child] was unwilling/incapable of properly training so his parents took it away (gave it to a friend/family so the dog was well loved afterward) the lesson he learned/wanted to teach in that video was that he knew he was not ready to own/train an LGD and wanted to wait to get one [as opposed to researching the right breed) untill he was able to spend the time Toby (a d eventually Abby) needed to be properly trained LGD(s)

Although he is very capable. Sincerely hope they roam off somewhere! Those geese are huge! 2 of them almost filled the pool! Love seeing the cattle moved to fresh grass! Ranch dogs of any kind aren’t for everyone. We just rescued an Aussie that was apparently dumped around our ranch. He’s only about 14-16 months old. He definitely had issues because he appears to have been abused for chewing on shoes and iPhone cables. Once we were sure no one was looking for him we had him neutered all immunizations given and he was also chipped. He appeared out of nowhere, none of our neighbors knew him, no collar, name tag or chip. Skinny, full of mated hair and flea ridden. He’s been here for 2 months and has stuck to my side since he got here. You can’t yell around him or he runs away, he’s also triggered by broom sticks. But now he’s a happy dog who learned to herd the goats by the second week of being here and he only chewed one old shoe and one cable. Once he got a job he stopped his bad behaviors. We are now teaching him not to jump on people, he’s so smart and was so untrained it breaks my heart. I think he was in a house with a small yard and alone most of the time, he never bonded to anyone, I know this because he attached to me as soon as I fed him. He’s part of a three dog pack and so happy it hurts my heart. Please, please don’t get dogs because of their cuteness factor, know what the breed does before you get a dog that will become destructive out of boredom and lack of training. Work with your dog and make sure they get the training and job they need (individually.) And please don’t dump your dog when he becomes a problem to you. Edit: find the dog a proper home. I hope Abby recovers soon.

I wish more people understood canine traits and genetics. It would keep a lot of dogs out of shelters. There are definitely too many people who think all dogs are the same when they certainly are not. A pug does not need the same training as cattle dog or a pitbull , Doing so results in terrible consequences.

All our dogs have cattle dog or Aussie in them. One is a blue heeler/Aussie and the other a red heeler/Great Pyrenees. With the Aussie we have a well rounded ranch dog pack protecting the homestead. The are all wonderful dogs but in a city setting their barking would drive people nuts. They are also very active and all work to keep the goats chickens and ducks safe and secure. None would do good in an urban setting unless they were given tasks, exercise and training.

As a trainer of working dogs myself, I love this so much. You are a prime example of accepting, loving, and finding a good fit for the dog you get, rather than trying to make the dog you get into the dog you might have wanted. Abby's progress and her clear bond with you are evidence of just how much you've worked to provide the perfect home for the dog that Abby is. You're also spot on when it comes to certain breeds of dog not being right for everyone. Even within some of the more common pet breeds, some dogs are simply better suited to working and need that extra stimulation/challenge in their lives. When you look at breeds which are predominantly bred to work, they rarely thrive as in-home pets. I'm glad to hear you talk about this, so people don't see your bond with Abby and rush out to buy the same breed to keep as a pet. There is a *tremendous* difference between a pet and a working dog. Both have their place in today's society, and both can be perfectly happy in their roles. Understanding those roles is key.
@shauxuhrwilsongrim

I would say that basically the only good way to get a working-type breed as a pet would be re-homing an adult dog that didn't fit as a working dog. Getting a working breed puppy and expecting it to grow up as a pet rarely works out. And also no responsible ethical breeder will choose a life as a pet for a puppy who has all the instincts to work. But even if they don't thrive as a working dog, they usually greatly enjoy doing hobbies that are similar to the work they would do.

@@shauxuhrwilsongrim I really agree with your comment and I have seen a real life example of this. My cousin received as a gift a young Border Collie female from a friend that breeds and trains them for livestock work. He told her that the puppy just didn't have the temperament for being a working farm dog. He knew my cousin is an animal lover and an experienced dog owner. But she also owns, runs, and teaches a private school of about 10-12 students between the ages of 4-10 years of age. And her dog is now the official Child Herder at school. Bibi, the dog, won't let the children leave the school building unless my cousin says it's OK, and during recess times, she stays with them and guards them at all times, gently "herding" them back into the building when recess is over. It is very funny to watch; Bibi has a gentle and almost timid nature but she takes her job very seriously. And the kids all love her to death!

@@shauxuhrwilsongrim I definitely agree with this. Oftentimes dogs who are bred to work but for whatever reason aren't able to do their intended job can still work, just in a different job. And even dogs who weren't bred specifically for working often benefit from being given "jobs" to do, getting involved in various training activities or canine sports, etc. It's just that some dogs need more activity/challenges than others.

@@purplepason grapes can cause kidney damage on dogs, it can be quite serious. Maybe you just got lucky and she never ate too much at a time? It's definitely good to check what are safe and unsafe foods to give whenever you get a new pet, and sometimes even every few years since things might change. Loved the classical background music on this video. While stationed in Germany we lived in a village not far from the Air Force base. We visited a local farmer and went into the barn where the dairy cows were located. I heard classical music coming from a very old small radio for the cows enjoyment. The farmer told us that they had tried different kinds of music but the classical music produced the most milk from the cows. I found this very interesting. Thanks for the video.

I hope you start looking into a third dog soon. I bet those coyotes knew that Abby was injured / in the house, that you had been gone much of the night, and that made them bolder. Looks likes they tried to run the pigs, since Toby can't protect them. If the coyotes did not have a negative experience, they will be back to explore and test more and push their territory against the dogs to get closer to the food sources the dogs are guarding. Three or four coyotes might even test Toby directly, and I think we heard three in there. Having a third dog would help insure you always have two on duty. Keep in mind that coyotes are sneaky, disappear in the darkness, and (unlike felines) know better than to look into a flashlight. Lights are great for making your presence known, but not for spotting a coyote. On most nights, you will need some sort of night vision tool to see them, especially if you have not been sitting in the dark for an hour yourself.

Dissolving sutures are great because you don't have to go back and take the sutures out. But the downside is... sometimes they don't dissolve completely and you get one or two pieces that just stubbornly won't go, and they start causing problems. I remember when I had surgery on my hand and the dissolving sutures didn't fully dissolve on their own, so I had to go in with tweezers and pick the scraps out. Was it better than normal sutures? Oh yeah. But I feel like their "set and forget"-ness is a little overestimated. =/ In my case, I was lucky the undissolved sutures were all superficial enough that I could use tweezers. Very glad you caught it early with Abby and didn't just dismiss it, a lot of people would've! I always admire that you take really good care of your dogs.

Make 2 balls of meat or mushed bread with peanut butter and don’t let them SEE you put the med in their food becuz YESS if they see you opening that dreaded med bottle they instantly know! Soo stick the med when their not looking into the second ball of food. Toss the first one in the air and they will catch it and as soon as they ABOUT have that one gobbled down throw the second one (with med) up in the air. Why can’t you just give one ball the first time and it be the med ball?? Becuz they as you know have EXCELLENT smell so if they smell it they won’t eat it, so you have to keep the balls of food going and catch them off guard. Coyotes know when your dogs are split up. They are taking advantage. May consider a third dog. Sorry, but maybe Abby will need to be a more indoor/outdoor dog for a minute. 🙏

Maybe take Toby or Abby for walks around your home and other buildings once or twice every week to scent mark a bigger area. If the local COYOTES are getting too familiar.

I can't help but worry those Coyotes were the undoing of Ginny barn cat. The thought makes me really sad. It happened on our 7 acre property in Oregon. A cat is no match for even one coyote, let alone a pack :(

Morgan, you could have a second career as a sound editor for films!! The music you put to Abby's return home from the emergency Vet had me all choked up!!!! And when you played that music from "Amadeus" (the film), and the chickens came running, I envisioned Mozart's laughter (from the movie), and you had me grinning again!! Your talent for this is amazing! Also, as an animal lover, I applaud you for addressing the importance of always considering whether a dog is right for someone based on the circumstances the dog will face, and the responsibilities! Kudos to you, for all you do! Hoping you & Abby both get some good rest!

Heard you make one the best advice on your videos today. It’s not about the guard dog you want you work with the guard dog you got. Every dog has their own strengths and weaknesses. Play to your dogs strengths so they can be successful and they will be very happy. Nice video today

Our LGD rejected her stitches this summer after her spay. Her wound kept opening up in stages until she went through a second procedure to remove the undissolved pieces of dissolvable stitches a couple of months after the original surgery. She's all good now. I'm so sorry Abby seems to be going through something very similar with her leg.

We rescued a working dog years ago. He was a short coated breed and had been kept in a concrete yard. He suffered repeated attacks of cellulitis because of the condition his skin was in from being kept/sleeping on that concrete. He was a wonderful dog, tough & hard-working out in the field, and incredibly loving and loyal to us. His only fault was that he was such a wimp at the vets. He would scream so loudly from antibiotic injections that the vet would make me stay with him as punishment while the vet left the room! 😂 Unfortunately he sustained life changing injuries while protecting another of our dogs but lived out retirement indoors with us. Lets just not talk about the freshly cooked 16 lb ham that went missing on Xmas eve. Oh and sat here with dissolvable stitches from surgery last week I'm not concerned honestly I'm not, really I'm not 😬 love to Abbey

I've got a feeling that Abby, as the 2nd dog, wanted to relate more to Toby than to learn how to behave 😊 I had 2 gorgeous Golden Retrievers, and Sally, the '2nd dog' depended so much on Zora, the '1st dog', and didn't quite get the 'training thing' for almost 3 years 😊 Toby is absolutely incredible, but had 100% attention when he was a puppy, without any 'doggy distractions'! Get well soon, Abby! Brilliant vlog, Morgan! Thanks so much ❤❤❤❤

I had a dog who had to take pills twice a day for her entire life. I bought some Greenies pill pockets, and she loved them. I never had a problem getting her to take pills. She would get excited when I got out the package, and she could barely sit still while I loaded a pill into the “treat.” In case you have been too busy to watch Justin Rhodes videos lately, he has been doing an outstanding job of promoting your book. Henry has helped. He loves his Toby Dog!

Morgan, you did not over react. I had abdominal surgery, (the 7th since 2014), my incision was not healing properly, it turned out after weeks, that it was a stitch which eventually worked its way out. I was getting ct scans every 3-4 weeks, for a total of 5. As a retired nurse I kept on top of the doctor & team. I did not want yet another surgery, so it’s been almost a year & I’m not at 100%. With Abby, and all the animals in your care, as challenging, it is great you are so on top of how they are feeling and don’t wait to get them to the vet. We animal owners need to accept the responsibility of all care, the good & the bad, that comes with having them. Prayers for a speedy recovery for Abby. Thank you for sharing!

Fall is coyote breeding season, so they'll be super worked up for a while :) Gets wild out here in my neighborhood too. There have been a few times I've had to come out and back up the LGDs with my house dogs and a few shotgun shots into the air this year and especially now that fall weather has finally reached my little corner of Texas.

I have a highly intelligent highly motivated Shepard great Dane Cross. He herds on his own, he's perfect around birds with training. He even lays down with our pet belly piglets and momma's. Please do not take money from better help. My mother is a clinical psychologist, therapy cannot be replicated the same way online compared to in person. Additionally better help has several lawsuits and federal investigation due to how they sell users data, such as how frequently did they have sessions, when etc. As someone outside of the subject area they look fine, talk the talk but they're actually rather despicable.
