+radradroadbot Ha! That’s actually not too far from the truth. The desert air around here does a pretty good job of preserving things. I once inadvertently left a carbon steel knife stuck in a stump on one of my trips. I really liked that knife but it wasn’t until the the following summer that I had a chance to go back into that area and find it. It was perfectly fine. A few spots of very light rust on the part of the blade that was stuck into the stump. A little bit of polishing with steel wool and it was as good as new. Cheers!

I have read accounts of Russian troops caching crates of rifles ammo in wooden crates treated with tar, buried in the steppes being found after 50-70 years. The rifles were coated with a generous helping of cosmoline, wrapped in paper and then sealed in the crates.After a thorough cleaning, guns looked as good as new, functioned perfectly. The ground they were cached in was kinda swampy as I recall, and they said that after cleaning, both the rifles and ammo functioned perfectly, even after 50-70 years.

+john Mullholand That’s pretty amazing considering. But I don’t doubt it. If you can keep moisture off of them they should last a good long time. Interesting to think about how long people have been caching supplies. Throughout history...

I've cleaned several Mosin-Nagants that have been stored in Cosmoline and paper, as you describe, and it really does a good job, however, even with an intact shellac finish on the stock, you'll have to 'sweat out' the cosmo, over a few days, or use a harsh cleaner like Purple Powder, etc, and shower it off. The metal work is usually great, but I've found that to quickly remove the cosmo from the gun, it's best to mix up some Ed's Read, with lanolin and acetone, and after using a good, hand-held steam cleaner to remove the bulk of the cosmo, break down the bolt, magazine spring and other small parts and cover/soak them in the Ed's Red. Clean up the rest of the metal as you would any other rifle, again with the Ed'S Red, and leave a light coat on the metal. The lanolin will allow for a long term protection, in your safe, usually a year or more. Just be sure to mix up your batch of Red, in a good, clean, never used gas can, metal or plastic and keep the cap on tight, to make sure the acetone componet is there when you need it. A glass mason jar with a tight metal lid, is good for saving your soaking stock, as it take a lot of use before you need to toss it and it will work on other metal tools, as well.

I suppose the biggest problem which most people will face with regards to buried caches is remembering where the hell they buried it. Nothing stopping them from logging its location with a GPS device or writing the coordinates down in a small note book and kept with your original bug out pack.
@chrism6195 Жыл бұрын
the only issue with that is if there is a solar flare or EMP and knocks out your device .
@warweasel2832 Жыл бұрын
@@chrism6195 Remember how far along the last road you are, walk out in a specific asimuth for a specific time. Take some readings of visible hill peaks or other non-organic landmarks. Your compass readings there should at least tell you if you're in the right spot before digging, even if they're useless up until that point. Land Nav is key. This stuff is one of the big practice items that should be on everyone's list, preparedness aside.

I'm all for caches, but if you are going to burry a gun you should remove a component and put that and the ammo in a second cache. It's not likely it would be found but if it was they wouldn't get a functional weapon.
@CoyoteWorks017 жыл бұрын
+Adventure Roads Motorcycle Magazine That’s not a bad idea. In the areas that I”m placing my caches there is virtually no chance of anyone finding them. It’s so remote it could be years between anybody even being within a mile of any of them. And the country is so big the chance of anyone walking over the area is pretty much non existent. Add to that the fact that this one with the firearm in it is on private land makes it pretty secure. But I think that would be a smart thing to do if there was any chance of anyone stumbling across it. I’d like to have a couple caches closer to town in more of the urban interface area. And in that context those extra precautions would be absolutely mandatory. Cheers!
@readhistory20237 жыл бұрын
The chances of someone stumbling across a buried cache are next to nil. I do agree with multiple caches but I'd place them widely apart and in different directions. You have no idea which direction you will be going when you bug out or why you'll be bugging out.

Water purification capability, fire kit, the ability to cook something, another set of knives, cordage, etc. You also need to make a map with complete directions to each location to be placed in your will in case you die. It was a great video of proof of concept video for sure. I really enjoyed it.

There are some things in an IFAK that don't expire. As for any medicinal items in the IFAK that do, some of it will lose some efficacy in working but, not all of it. Especially if it's completely sealed in an airtight container. But, I tell you what, the next time you dig up your cache you just leave that Excedrin, Bayer, Tylenol, Aleve, and Ibuprofen alone and don't even try and relieve the muscle pains you acquired during the digging with them.

Wysiwyg101, that's a good thought, I dont have any caches (for my own many reasons ((definitely not against caches tho lol))) but, I like the thought of including that information in a will. The one time I cached a firearm, it was an ar-7 "survival rifle" along with a resupply "bucket cache". 5gal bucket sealed with silicone and buried 4ft down, (1: ar-7 rifle, 1: 100rd box of cci ammo, 2: rolls TP, 6: bottles water, 3: MREs (assorted) 2: changes clothes, 3: 50Gal lawn and garden bags and a pair of chuck taylor converse) I lived in Miami county then, and I was lucky I thought to chain it to a tree (20ft dog cable) The spot I buried the bucket flooded for a week and it percolated out of the ground. It would have washed all the way down to Cincinnati if it wasn't attached to that tree. When I recovered the cache it was still sealed tight, everything was fine, even the tp was dry. But I learned to find higher ground/better spots for burying things.

+Rob roberson Thanks Rob. That's awesome to hear. Please tell your son I said hi and I wish him many happy days of adventures in the outdoors! My philosophy with most things outdoors is that nothing is true until Ive tried it myself. Thanks again for sharing that about your son. That made my day hearing that! And great to hear that you are getting your son out into the woods. I think so many kids today are missing that part of growing up.

I prefer using containers that are made tuff, non metallic, 36" deep and that are 100% water proof. In an area like yours you can probably get by with mush less but some of mine have been in the ground for 15+ years in an area that go's from 95+ to -15. Nice video and this kind of video is what we need more of.

This is more important than most people realize, I use a combination of mile markers and dates that will stay static for cache locations, and when I do an unearthing I walk to the location barefoot in a hospital gown, because that is the normal wear at a FEMA relocation and organ harvesting holding center, you can add resistance to sublevel moisture with Balistol or Cosmo line,never forget to have away to clean water, water and ammo are gold. Good job I am proud of you and the fact that you are thinking in a defensive ready mindset. In God we trust with everything else we have a plan B. Oh and always include a small knapsack and fire making materials in every cache with some pain meds, trust me it pays off.

I'll just follow some dude dressed head-to-toe in tactical gear ( lots of Velcro patch areas on his jacket ) to his truck. It's probably a black raptor with extra light bars on it, a "tactical life" sticker with a little AR under it .....next to a Glock emblem on the back window... maybe a grainy black and white flag bleeding into a Punisher skull... And when he goes into Walmart, I'll get his pistol out of his truck...

I have had a stainless 10/22 takedown buried for well over a year now, dug it up a few days ago just to check it out and it was absolutely perfect. Just broke it down, vacuum sealed everything seperately w/ desiccant packs. Rifle in 2 parts, brick of ammo, 3 mags, small cleaning kit, good fixed blade knife, mylar blanket, fire kit, para cord shit like that. As well as a small day pack just to put everything in if need be. Pretty much just a little kit for "just in case" shit lol. vacumm sealed, in contractor garbage bags, in the smallest bucket i could fit it all in. Chose a stainless rifle with a synthetic stock just to better be protected. Always good to have a couple different caches, all on the way to your primary bugout location and even 1 or 2 small cheap ones just with food/water if need be to a possible secondary location never hurt.

Yeti got political by severing all ties with the NRA to make a statement against the 2nd Amendment and therefore law abiding gun owners. We should not buy their products as we need to push back against these corporations like Dick's sporting goods and Bank of America for example who came out against gun rights. If you already own. The cooler cover their name with a sticker or paint in protest. I was about to buy one until they turned on us so I bought an Artic cooler. Just as good and more reasonably priced.

Knowing a little about the area that you travel i can only expect that all of your caches will be in that good or better shape. With a homemade PVC vault, clay cat litter as desiccant and a few oxygen absorbers from Jack Links beef jerky, I cached a Mosin Nagant, 500 assorted rounds, my favorite chocolate and peanut butter Power Bars, water purification tablets, a collapsible canteen and canteen cup(metal), a one pound bag of rice and a bag of 16 bean soup beans. They stayed buried for 5 years. Everything was fine. I brought a piece of deer leg out with me and a stew pot. Got water from the stream and purified it. Filled the pot and added the leg and beans and rice and had a hell of a supper that night. Next morning I had coffee, some leftover venison soup and ate the two Power Bars. Think the difference was made in adding the oxygen absorbers. There is currently a large airtight drum there with 3 guns and enough gear and food for 3 people to last for a good month or more in the mountains. The kit was perfectly crafted for mountain guerrilla warfare and currently 6 barrels occupy spots in serious remote corners of certain mountains(What? Thought I was giving up even the mountain's name??? Lol. Not a chance!)
