I have been reading too much grimdark this year (Joe Abercrombie and Brent Weeks) so I'm ready to close the year with a palate cleanser, I got The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches for me and my wife to buddy read and checked out A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking from the library, thanks for the suggestions 😂

I find reading lighter, cozy stories after reading something like grimdark feels like cleansing your mind and body. :)

@@JohnG225 yea, and that is purely personal taste. In grimdark there is no hope, no hero no win of good against evil, just gray characters beating each other down in world-ending events. Cozy stories are just for enjoyment and happiness, a slice of life. There's no world-ending threat, just an interesting story that fills your heart with joy.

I recently finished Nettle & Bone by T Kingfisher (couldn't stop once I started, lol: so good) and she's really impressed me. I have a handful of her other novels on my TBR and A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking is one of the ones on the top of the pile. Definitely my new favourite author of 2022. Thanks for the recommendation video. :)

Bone shaker and its later sequels are set in the Pacific Northwest, if you like that setting.

While watching this, Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree came to my door. I haven't read it yet, but apparently (which is why I bought it) it's a cozy fantasy about a retired warrior going to a small town and opening a coffee shop. And I am so excited to read it. But I think it has subplot of a romance?

I read Legends & Lattes a couple of months ago and it was so super cozy and wholesome. I absolutely loved it! It does have a subplot of romance, but the whole vibe is just *chef's kiss* p.s. you will also be craving baked goods while reading!! Enjoy!!

Just started Nettle and Bone... first off, I love it and I shall now be reading T. Kingfisher until I run out of stuff to read. Mara would be me if I was a princess. Second, I wanted to put a bug in your ear regarding Juliet Marillier, Kelly Barnhill, and Jonathan Auxier. If you like the 'flavor' of Nettle and Bone, I think you'll love these authors, too. Juliet Marillier is listed as YA Historical Fantasy (very magical though) but leaning more on the adult IMO. Kelly Barnhill and Jonathan Auxier are middle grade children's fantasy but still very enjoyable if you love a good faerie tale. If you've ever read The Graveyard Book by Niel Gaiman you'll be in the right ballpark. Much love and thank you for suggesting T. Kingfisher.

I am reading A Wizard's Guide to Defensive Baking now! I agree that when you talk about the subject matter that it sounds dark and high-stakes but the narrator really filters a lot of that out to give it a cozy and fun experience. Yes! It's like Shrek cozy and funny - but with a message against discrimination.

I had to pause the video and go download the Wizard book from Audible! After Nettle and Bone I’m convinced I will love most everything from T Kingfisher. Thanks to you, I did read the series/duology by Tricia Levenseller. Both books were absolutely wonderful. May I recommend Half a Soul by Olivia Atwater? This is the first book in a trilogy that is a perfect combination of cozy and fantasy. And, finally, The House Witch by Delemhach. There are two published books in this series with the third to be released in Feb/Mar of 2023.

Different people have different ideas of what constitutes cozy and fun. I read mostly darker books like Legacy Trilogy and Shadows of the Apt, so I consider books like Cradle and Mistborn TFE cozy.

So I got a reverse recommendation for you or anyone else who's interested I know of and got vol.1 of Witch Hat Atelier, haven't read it yet but I stumbled onto it after going through withdrawals from watching Little Witch Academia by Yoh Yoshinari. There's a manga too but I've had trouble finding them I referring to the anime series, it was on Netflix, the 2 sound surprisingly similar.

Since you enjoy Witch Hat Atelier, I recommend Villains are Destined to Die which is about a girl that wakes up in the body of the villain of a game she played. I also recommend The Apothecary Diaries which is set in ancient China and the MC solves medical mysteries! Very cute and cozy. And last but not least I recommend Frieren: Beyond Journey's End which is about an immortal elf that goes on a journey to understand what life means to the people around her. It’s a very sweet read
